DOES THE INSTITUTION HAVE A GENDER AND

GBV ACTION PLAN (PROVIDE EVIDENCE)

An action plan exists and some of its activities are:

Establish the multi-party women caucus Identify potential women leadership through parties Network with regional – international women caucus

Conduct induction programmes or new councilorsand managers

Gender dialogues with community leadership e.g.Chiefs

Conduct workshops with men’s groups, and audit theimpact of the training

WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF BUY IN AND

INVOLVEMENT OF MANAGEMENT AND

POLITICIANS

The buy in and involvement of managementand politicians is good. The Town clerk andcouncilors are much supportive andinvolved in gender and gender-basedinitiatives and activities.

There is a Gender based committeespearheading the activities. Even the

community participate and is supportive insuch activities.

Yes, the head of the institution (andthe Town Clerk) Rachel BuhleJeremia.

HOW ARE THEY INVOLVED?

Yes. The committeespearheading genderbased activities includeboth men and women.

Also presentation andKgotla meetings areaddressed to both menand women. Even atschools information is

disseminated to bothgirls and boys.

ARE THERE DEDICATED RESOURCES, INCLUDING

HUMAN AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR

GENDER MAINSTREAMING?

There is a specified budget for addressing Genderbased issues. Issues of gender and genderbased violence are attended to by using council

resources such as transport and psychosocialsupport.

Budget available is in terms of salaries to socialworkers and for providing life skills in home

economics courses, such as sewing.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

So far there is no tool for monitoringthe progress, but those providedwith support are referred to otherservices to enhance their livingstandards, eg training institutionsand counselling

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

An informed community on genderissues. Attendance and participationat Kgotla meetings by the communityat large has improved enablingdissemination of information beingeffective.

Survivors find it easy to report casesto social workers.

Programs for GBV victims known.

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

Yes, the practice is sustainable as it isdone through the normal forumssuch as Kgotla meetings, workshopsand institutional group meetings.Periodic meetings conducted andhouse to house visits made to

victims and squatters.Other councils also have GBV

committees e.g Kweneng.

LESSONS LEARNED

People do not take gender issues seriously

Liaising with stakeholders such as BotswanaPolice, District Administration and Tribal

Administration and commemorating eventstogether give best results. E.g Clean-upcampaign, World AIDS Day and 16 days of Activism against women and children.
