During the summer of 2010, the worst flooding in Pakistan
took place causing destruction to infrastructure and
housing as well as severely affecting millions of lives.
There was an urgent need to point out the major affected
areas and to quickly carryout damage assessment
exercise.

The sectors which needed immediate attention were:
a) Roods, Railways and Bridges
b) Housing
c) Agriculture & Irrigation

Remote sensing satellites can be used to map the disaster
stricken areas quickly, thus helping in timely damage
assessment.
Thus ensuring effective and coordinated rescue, relief and
rehabilitation operations.

• A rapid mapping of the flood affected areas was carried out using pre-postMODIS data.
• This was followed by use of SPOT 4 and SPOT 5 data for detailed damageanalysis.
• The information was supplied in regard to monitoring damages toinfrastructure, settlements, canal breaches, roads, bridges, railways andcropped area.
• Temporal flood inundation mapping, extent of flood water and statistics forvarious attributes regarding flood damage
• Geographic and agriculture area damaged and extent losses in crop yield andproduction for Kharif season
• The flood recession statistics are being provided on 5 daily basis

Conclusions
GIS and Remote Sensing Satellites can be used to
map the disaster stricken areas quickly, thus helping

operations.
