Note: The term “Pressure Relieving” is used by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines 2003. Consequently there are guidelines and articles that describe cushions which reduce pressure as “Pressure Relieving”. Within this brochure Invacare describes the Flo-tech range as “Pressure Reducing” to assist with the product selection and educational needs of the user and clinician.
™
A Guide to BAsic seAtinG The risk of developing pressure ulcers is significantly increased when patients or clients spend
extended periods in the seated position.
A further complication associated with sitting for extended periods are the practical aspects
of repositioning and the impairment of venous return. Invacare provide an educational package
entitled “Clinical Concepts of Seating”, aimed at increasing awareness of the risks associated
with inappropriate chair nursing.
Sitting can create an unstable posture, and the performance of any pressure reducing cushion
cannot be properly evaluated without taking account the overall seating position and the
existence of factors which may contribute to the development of pressure ulcers.
the BAsic oBjectives for correct seAtinG • To ensure that thigh and buttocks are adequately supported
• To reduce vulnerability to pressure ulcers
• To maintain a balanced and symmetrical position
• To reduce spasm and spasticity
• To reduce contractures and deformities
• To reduce discomfort and pain
• To enhance any retained mobility and ability
Accordingly, an ideal pressure reducing cushion should:
• Distribute weight over as wide an area as possible
• Prevent tissue deformation
• Conform to the user’s shape
• Not bottom out
• Offer additional support at the sides and rear
• Facilitate the user’s lifestyle

The new FLO-TECH SOLUTION XTRA CUSHION AND MODULAR SYSTEM has been developed
alongside clinicians to address the individual postural requirements of wheelchair users. Excellent
pressure re-distribution properties remain an integral feature of the Solution cushion, whilst the new
component parts of the Xtra modular system provide several variations of the cushion to promote active
correction and management of posture where needed.
Velcro parts have been added to both the top (the Ischial Well, Femoral Shelf and Pommel regions) and
also the bottom of the cushion base to incorporate the Xtra additions. All the affixing component parts
are manufactured from high-density CMHR foam, and have been fitted with velcro to ensure that the
wedges remain in the prescribed position on the cushion, even during repeated use.
Through using this modular system, therapeutic interventions can be more effectively addressed with
regards to postural maintenance of End Users, through enhancing function, maximising comfort and
preserving skin integrity.

vulnerable ischial and sacral area, making this cushion suitable
for Very High Risk/Elevated Risk users.
Offers high levels of pressure reduction and product longevity.
Prevents the wetting of the cover, thereby reducing the possibility
of soiling and contamination. Will allow easier surface cleaning
and drying.
Allows patient movement - reduces potential for shear and
friction and ensures good air circulation, reducing potential
for skin maceration.
Helps prevent slippage, ensuring safe use of the cushion.
Enables postural management and correction of the End User,
giving a more individualised seating position.
Enhances contouring of the cushion to the User, allowing
maximum immersion on the seated base.

of a pressure ulcer prevention care plan. Education, clinical judgement and action planning based on vulnerability
are fundamental factors in the prevention of pressure ulcers.
Flo-tech Solution Xtra Component Parts
• For correctable pelvic obliquity, place under the lowest ischial tuberosity (side of the pelvis) and ensure the lateral side of the pelvis and the trunk are stable.
• For fixed pelvic obliquity, place under the highest side to accommodate the deformity and also support the trunk if required – it may be more suitable to use the fluid pack.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad The pelvic obliquity pad can be inserted into either side of the ischial well under the gel pad.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad
• Encourages mid-lining through stabilising the pelvis and guiding the thighs into a central position.• Facilitates hip alignment for those with abduction, especially when used in conjunction with a pommel.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Hip Aligner
• Reduces external rotation and abduction of the thighs through aligning the femurs and may also assist with wind-sweeping.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Thigh Aligner
• Femoral alignment for those with internal thigh rotation and hip adduction.
• Maintains hip joints in an abducted position to facilitate normal development.
• May assist with spasticity (Hyper tonicity) management.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Pommel – Standard or Deep
The Hip Aligner can be placed on either side on the rear edge of the cushion, secured by the velcro, and used either unilaterally or bilaterally.
The Thigh Aligner can be placed on either side of the femoral shelf at the front of the cushion, secured by velcro and used either unilaterally or bilaterally.
The pommel can be placed on the front of the cushion to increase the existing pommel height.
• Maintains a firm base on slung canvases to maximise effect of component parts.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Rigidiser The Rigidiser is to be placed under the whole cushion (including wedges)
Measuring for the CushionAs with all cushions, it is imperative to measure the End User correctly to gain maximum postural benefit. Please refer to the diagrams below for correct measuring techniques:
TM
• Facilitates lateral pelvic and hip stability.• Encourages internal rotation of the hip.• Can be used either unilaterally for above knee amputees
or mild pelvic obliquity, and bilaterally for more contoured positioning.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Lateral Wedges can be placed underneath the base of the cushion and must be trimmed to the size of the cushion.
Lateral Wedges
• Front placement – prevents forward sliding.• Rear placement – assists with sacral pressure.• Side placement – for mild pelvic obliquity.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad A Fluid Pack can be inserted into the ischial well where required, and can be doubled for specific placing.
Fluid Pack
• Assists with lateral hip rotation and thigh alignment.• For milder postural positioning.• Can be used under one thigh for mild hip flexion
discrepancies.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Side Wedges Side wedges can be placed on any corner of the cushion base. There are 2 different wedges to accommodate all 4 corners.
• Assists with pelvic stability.• Accommodates posterior tilt.• Reduces anterior tilt.• Consider using anterior supports to facilitate pelvic
stability – e.g. pelvic belts.
Pelvic Obliquity Pad Front Wedge Front Wedge is to placed on the underneath of the cushion base and will need to be trimmed to size.
Cover DesignThe cover has been developed in an ingress resistant material.• An innovative design has been incorporated into the cover to
allow for it’s expansion to increase immersion into the cushion, once components have been added. There are 2 zips included in the cover which have colour coded sliders:
• Blue to open the cover.• Green to expand. The cover has a three-sided zip and can be fully opened to adjust the components as necessary.

Benefits
Provides a more stable and functional seating position for those
that sit sacrally. More suitable for elderly clients and those with a
fixed kyphotic posture or reduced hip flexion.
Reduces the need for a wedged cushion/lumbar roll/reclined
backrest and a longer seat depth. Minimises the tendency to slide
forward, thus reducing shear and friction forces and promoting
an enhanced postural position. Most effective when used in
conjunction with an angle-adjustable back support. Can also be
used with a reclining back or tilt in space frame for those with
extra postural needs.
Moulding allows the Flo-tech cushions to provide a 3D form,
which cannot be emulated in cut foam.
Separates the thighs, encourages good posture and allows air to
circulate. Also helps to prevent the knees from rubbing together.
Offers improved stability and postural support. Also delivers greater
degree of weight distribution, compared to a flat surface which
helps reduce shear and friction forces.
Offers high levels of pressure reduction and product longevity.
Black Smooth, Towelling and PU cover options accommodate
a range of user requirements.
Allows patient movement - reduces potential for shear and friction
and ensures good air circulation, reducing potential for skin
maceration. The Ingress Resistant fabric prevents the wetting
of the cover, dispersing any surface fluids and thereby minimising
the potential for skin breakdown.
Helps prevent slippage, ensuring safe use of the cushion.

The Flo-tech Visco range of cushions offers a comfortable and effective solution to those at High Risk / Elevated Risk or increased vulnerability to pressure ulcer development.
The Invacare Flo-tech Visco cushion range is manufactured using a moulding process which is
at the leading edge of technology. This unique moulding of the cushion will improve posture,
thus increasing comfort and the level of pressure reduction. Immobile users are considered
most vulnerable to pressure ulcer development whilst seated. Accordingly, advice should
be sought on reducing risk from NICE guidelines, RCN recommendations or reference to
Invacare’s “Clinical Concepts of Seating”.
Visco Elastic foam is high density and temperature-sensitive to the body, which allows it
to conform to the user’s shape, affording exceptional levels of comfort whilst reducing the
occurrence of peak pressures.

flo-tech BAck supportsThe Invacare Flo-tech Back Support range has been designed to provide added stability to a
wheelchair or standard armchair and it can be used in conjunction with any Flo-tech cushion.
The Flo-tech Back Support range provides excellent comfort and improved user positioning,
which in turn helps to improve or maintain independence whilst in the seated position in a
wheelchair or armchair. The unique supportive design offers protection from pressure ulcer
formation and spinal deformities which can cause severe pain.
There are two products within the range: The Back Support (FB1) provides a high degree of
stability and protection from pressure ulcer development. Alternatively, the Back Support with
Lumbar (FB1/LUM) can be used for those users who wish to have increased lateral and pelvic
stability; it also helps to restore the natural lumbar curve.

The new FLO-TECH INGRESS RESISTANT COVER has been specifically designed to prevent fluid
ingress and aid pressure ulcer prevention. The cover material has been treated with a fluorocarbon-based
fluid repellent finish in order to prevent the wetting of the cover and therefore reduce soiling and the risk
of contamination.
This will in turn have a positive outcome on patient comfort due to the maintenance of a dry cushion
surface. A reduction in surface fluids will also help prevent skin maceration, a major contributory
factor in the development of pressure ulcers*. All Invacare Flo-tech wheelchair cushions are now fitted with
Ingress Resistant covers as standard. Ingress Resistant covers can be easily identified by the two blue
stripes on the Flo-tech badge on the side of the cushion.

Allows patient movement - reduces potential for shear and friction
and ensures good air circulation, reducing potential for skin
maceration. Will help maximise the effectiveness of the foam core.
Helps prevent slippage, ensuring safe use of the cushion.
Assists in the easy transfer of the cushion.
