THE PRESIDENTear friends,

Gratitude is an amazing virtue; it flows directly from a deep, rich sense of abundance.

This abundance is palpable at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. You catch a sense of it in the breathtaking beauty of the campus, you feel it in the spirit and enthusiasm of our incredible young women, and you witness it in the commitment and dedication of our faculty and staff who are pushing us to the cutting edge of educational horizons. Abundance certainly describes our community—so much generosity in so many places, not the least of which is the support for our programs as well as the Flintridge Fund and the Capital Campaign. Finally, our alumnae deepen our abundance—they are everywhere, yes, around the world; and more and more are re-connecting with their “family on the Hill.” Abundance is abundant here!

I believe gratitude is an appropriate response to abundance. Scripture tells us, “To those who have, more will be given.” Our gratitude to each of you

is limitless. As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, it is so clear that we would not be the school we are today without you and the generations of families who have supported us for the last 85 years. Certainly, your generous donations matter—every gift makes dreams come true. But it is your generous spirit and your own Tolog enthusiasm that make our hearts beat with deep gratitude for you, our Flintridge Sacred Heart community. Soon we will experience the completion of Phase One of our Arts Center and you will witness what you have done. It is really quite amazing.

Thank you seems so small, so trite. That said, I trust our Dominican brother, Meister Eckhart, who, many years ago, assured us that a grateful “thank you” can be a perfect prayer. Please accept our gratitude and our loving prayers for your abundant support of our mission on the Hill.

With a thousand thanks,

Sister Carolyn McCormack, O.P.President

Eighty-five years ago, three Dominican Sisters traveled up the Hill to take possession of our beautiful school carrying only “a statue of the Blessed Virgin, a $5 bill and their faith.” Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has grown in ways no one could have imagined in 1931, and today offers cutting-edge academic opportunities, unparalleled co-curricular experiences and a dedicated and talented faculty. Thank you for being a part of our rich history!

erving as the chair of the Board of Directors for the last three years has been an incredibly gratifying experience. As I reflect on my term, I am so impressed by the dedication of President Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P., Principal Sr. Celeste Marie Botello, O.P., and the entire faculty and staff, as well as the unending generosity of our parents, alumnae, grandparents, parents of

alumnae and friends. Thanks to each of you, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has become the school of choice for young women seeking a college preparatory education in a Dominican, Catholic setting.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Sr. Carolyn for her guidance and support throughout my term. Under her leadership, FSHA’s first Strategic Plan was adopted by the Board of Directors in 2010, and the school has a clear vision of the programs and facilities needed to provide a 21st century education. Remarkable progress has been made toward the goals laid out in that plan (see Strategic Plan update, page 10), and the Board currently is working on the next Strategic Plan, which will be adopted in the spring of 2016.

Despite unanticipated challenges, the campus modernization project is making good progress. The highlight of my term was the start of the Arts Center Remodel project in January 2015. Nearly 20 years in the making, the Arts Center will provide our students with a modern facility that properly nurtures, supports and showcases their talent. This moment is possible only with the generosity of our community, and I look forward to sitting in the audience with all of you when the curtain rises in the spring.

I am also grateful to the members of our Board of Directors, who selflessly give of their time in support of FSHA. I especially want to thank three

departing Board members – Robert Edwards, Peter Conti and Paul Locker – each of whom has made important contributions to the Board. Though my term as chair is over, I know that the Board of Directors is in excellent hands with Bob Malchione, FSHA’s new Chair. Bob has been a member of the Board for the last seven years and served as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. His keen insights and quiet leadership encouraged us to dream big during the planning process and, equally important, motivated us to fulfill our goals. I am confident that he will be an outstanding Chair who will make a significant difference at FSHA.

FSHA celebrates its 85th anniversary this year, and I am fully aware that all of us are a small, but very important part in the history of this prestigious school. The programs and campus we enjoy today are the direct result of the generosity and leadership of those who came before us. I am deeply grateful to each person acknowledged in this Annual Report on Philanthropy for the time, talent and treasure given to ensure that the mission of FSHA continues to thrive today and for the next 85 years.

WITH GRATEFUL HEARTS…

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

ROBERT EDWARDS (Caroline ’06) A board member since 2009, Robert Edwards served on the Governance and Development committees. He was also the opening capital campaign chair. “Robert and his wife Marion brought tremendous enthusiasm and commitment to the capital campaign volunteer team,” says Bob Harper, former Chair of the Board of Directors.

“Robert was instrumental in building the initial momentum of our fundraising efforts that has only grown stronger over the last few years.” — Bob Harper

PAUL LOCKER (Kathleen ’08, Kristine ’11)An important leader in the Buildings and Grounds Committee, Paul Locker oversaw the refurbishing of the Lake Arrowhead cabins. Paul joined the Board of Directors in 2008 and also spent time on the Strategic Plan and Master Plan committees. “Paul’s thoroughness and clarity are qualities that I have wanted to emulate myself,” says Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P.

“His strong commitment and work ethic are admirable. We are grateful for the leadership he has brought to FSHA in his role on the Board of Directors.”— Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P.

DR. PETER CONTI (Alyssa ’11, Paige ’11)Dr. Peter Conti joined the Board of Directors in 2008. During his tenure, Peter served on the Education and Development committees, and played an important role in developing the 2010 – 2015 Strategic Plan. “The most satisfying accomplishment during my time on the board was drafting and approving FSHA’s first-ever working Strategic Plan,” says Peter. “The plan is extremely helpful to the school and Board of Directors alike in setting the vision for FSHA for the next five years.” Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P. agreed.

“Peter’s organizational skills, honed through his USC medical work and his expertise in strategic planning are gifts he has consistently offered to FSHA throughout his tenure as a director on our Board.”— Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P. BOB HARPER (Kathleen ’08)

Though Bob Harper isn’t leaving the Board of Directors, we would like to thank him for his leadership as Board Chair for the past three years. Under his direction, Bob guided the implementation of the Strategic Plan, led the construction of the Arts Center and helped negotiate the Master Plan with the City of La Cañada Flintridge.

“Bob’s leadership, his excellent people skills and his thoughtful, reflective insights have enriched all of us during his six-year tenure on our Board of Directors, especially as Board Chair. I am particularly grateful for Bob’s strong leadership of our mission at FSHA and to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. His sense of humor and his generosity are delightful to experience.” — Sr. Carolyn McCormack, O.P.

JEFFREY BENNETT (Amanda ’11, Andrea ’14, Sofia ’17)When Jeff Bennett’s oldest daughter

Amanda ’11 decided to attend FSHA, he was a bit surprised; after all, there were two great high schools within walking distance of their home. However, Amanda was adamant about attending FSHA after visiting the campus. “She told me how Sister Celeste had impressed her, how the freshman volleyball coach was going to start her and how a group of senior FSHA girls had embraced her and made her feel so welcome,” recalls Jeff. “My other two daughters, Andrea ’14 and later Sofia ’17, both agreed that Amanda had made the right decision and followed their older sister’s lead.”

Born and raised in Pasadena, Jeff is currently the vice president of Engineering and Product Development for Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. and the director general of Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. of Mexico. Jeff’s wife, Julieta, is president of FSHA’s Parents’ Guild.

We welcome six new members to the Board of Directors for the 2015-16 school year.

MATTHEW LEWIS (Madeline ’16)With 24 years of law experience, Matt Lewis has handled a wide variety of cases, from real estate disputes

to breach of contract and patent infringement. “Intellectual property is probably my favorite field,” says Matt. “It is very dynamic, and has been influenced heavily by technology and innovation over the last several years.”

Matt works for White & Case, an international law firm that serves companies, governments and financial institutions. At the firm, Matt counsels clients involved in complex commercial litigation cases. He also advises businesses, individuals, accounting firms and other entities in jury and non-jury trials, binding arbitrations and mediations.

As a former trustee at High Point Academy in Pasadena, Matt knows the time and dedication that Board work requires: “A board needs to be attentive to the needs of all the constituents and it can be an interesting and challenging juggling act to keep everyone happy. But seeing the students succeed is very rewarding.”

BRIAN ARIAL (Katie ’16)As a high-ranking architect at one of the largest firms in the country, Brian Arial brings a unique

perspective to the Board of Directors. “The timing is good since the school is going through a campus Master Plan and will be constructing several buildings,” says Brian. “I can bring my years of experience as an architect dealing with projects like this as well as fresh eyes to the Board of Directors and Master Planning Committee.”

At DLR Group, Inc., Brian is responsible for strategic planning, business development, office operations and overall client relations. He also led the company’s international practice in China and is currently responsible for the DLR Group in the Middle East.

While his career may take him to far-flung places, Brian is very much rooted to the SoCal area. He is a former trustee at Mayfield Junior School, a current Board director for Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank and a founding member of the USC Architecture Heritage Committee.

CHRISTINE LONGO NAVARRO ’82 (Elle ’07)As an alumna, Christine Longo Navarro ’82 has many fond memories of her time on the Hill. “I loved the

dances—Winter Ball, Prom—as well as the dance concerts,” says Christine. “The music, the friends, the dressing up … I had a ball!”

It’s that enthusiasm and fun-loving nature that makes Christine a top Realtor with Partner’s Trust. Christine is valued for her ability to professionally and effectively deal with virtually any real estate situation or client personality. According to Partner’s Trust, “Christine does this with a unique combination of honesty, integrity, patience, creativity, follow through, positive attitude, organizational skills and ability to listen to her clients wants and needs.”

Christine also brings her experience as an alumna and parent of an alumna to the Board. She was the Networking Chairwoman for the Alumnae Association Executive Board and helped begin the first Alumnae Association Business Networking Night two years ago.

SARAH SIMA MCCANN ’96 As the former Alumnae Association president, Sarah Sima McCann ’96 has been an active member of the FSHA community beyond her years

as a student. Under her direction, the Alumnae Association Board started the successful Business Networking Night, doubled attendance at the annual reunion events, increased Flintridge Fund alumnae donations and expanded FSHA’s social media outreach. Now, Sarah’s ready to bring her alumnae perspective to the Board of Directors. “The alumnae on our Board of Directors have walked the halls of FSHA as students and navigated the world beyond as graduates,” says Sarah. “We take pride in the successes of FSHA and feel an obligation to work to ensure the continuity of the tradition for present and future students.”

Sarah also brings her leadership as VP of Operations and co-founder of Elevate Services. Elevate is a next-generation legal service provider helping law firms and corporate legal departments operate more effectively. Sarah is responsible for all North America operations, ensuring process efficiency, quality and continuous improvement.

On top of all of those commitments, Sarah is also a mother of four. Something tells us that she likes to keep busy.

TED SNYDER (Evan Ann ’07)Though Ted Snyder’s daughter Evan Ann graduated in 2007, he remains touched by her experience at FSHA. “I joined the Board of Directors because

I am very appreciative of the impact the school had on my daughter in her formative years,” says Ted. “Not only does Flintridge Sacred Heart offer an excellent educational experience, it also provides strong support for developing individuality and building self-confidence.”

Ted brings valuable knowledge of the real estate field to the Board as the CEO and co-owner of Symphony Development, an integrated real estate development firm which he co-founded in 1991. With a broad range of product types (office, retail, residential, student housing), Symphony identifies development opportunities, creates a development strategy and then oversees the entitlement, financing, construction and lease up of the individual projects. Ted has also worked for large financial institutions including Bank of America, Security Pacific Bank and IndyMac, a publicly traded REIT.

or 85 years, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has been a top school for young girls and their families in our local community and abroad. The 2010-2015 Strategic Plan provides a clear roadmap to ensure FSHA’s continued excellence. Approved in 2010 by the Board of Directors with

input from a cross-section of our community, the Strategic Plan builds on our existing strengths while addressing what a FSHA education should offer in the 21st century.

We are proud of the progress we have made in the five years since the Strategic Plan was adopted. The school launched the 1:1 laptop program and the Junior and Senior Research Projects; developed new faculty and staff compensation policies; completed a boarding program assessment; identified key messages that express the magic of a FSHA education and created complementary new digital and print materials; adopted a campus Master Plan to improve our buildings and campus; and issued the Specific Plan/Environmental Impact Report to the City of La Cañada Flintridge and our neighbors.

Create a living curriculum, which is adaptable and changing to ensure that each student is well prepared for the college or university of her choice and has the foundation to live a life of faith, integrity and truth.

• College Counseling and Academic Advising Assessment: In January, the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS) visited campus to complete a college counseling and academic advising audit. FSHA received commendations for our existing programs as well as recommendations for improvement. Since the audit, some changes have already been made, such as reorganizing the structure of the advising program and adding a full-time licensed therapist to develop a holistic wellness program while providing social and emotional support to our students. See page 14 for more details on our college counseling program.

• Online School for Girls: In 2014-15, FSHA became an affiliate member of the Online School for Girls, a learning community composed of over 80 of the best-known schools nationally and internationally, that offers online high school classes for girls at independent schools. This partnership has allowed us to expand our course offerings and connect our students in meaningful, academic pursuits with students around the country and around the world. Course options include AP Computer Science, AP Macroeconomics, AP Calculus BC, Multivariable Calculus, Genetics and Human Biology, Computer Programming and Intro to Engineering, among others.

Create a small, completely integrated, boarding program of distinction and capitalize on the opportunity to foster global understanding among all students.

• Transportation Program: A new effective transportation program was put in place that allows our boarding students to be actively engaged in all aspects of school life as well as increased weekend outings.

• Improved Dining Experience: The dining hall was upgraded with new equipment and a new food service provider, Culin Arts, was hired to enhance the dining experience for our boarding students. The Sisters, employees and day students also benefit from these changes.

Establish a formalized system for strategic market planning to insure the school maintains a strong reputation as a Catholic, Dominican school for girls, and maximizes enrollment in both the day and boarding programs.

• Mission Brochure: The Mission Effectiveness Committee introduced a mission brochure for faculty, staff, students and parents in 2014-15. The purpose of the brochure was to deepen understanding of the Dominican charism.

• Creation of Campaign Brand: A visual identity and website, visionforveritas.org was developed in support of the capital campaign, A

Vision for Veritas. To accurately communicate the goals of the campaign and bring excitement to the project, additional promotional items such as campaign banners, signs and donor proposals were created.

• Implementation of Marketing Plan: FSHA adopted an advertising calendar and marketing plan and increased its public relations efforts in order to show more broadly the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff and programs.

Attract the resources sufficient to achieve the vision of the school and to meet the demands of these strategic goals.

Arts Center: Construction began on the Arts Center shortly after the curtains closed on the 2014 fall musical “Once Upon a Mattress.” Crews immediately set to work decommissioning the Auditorium and began its transformation into a modern Arts Center, scheduled to open in the spring of 2016.

Raised $9.4M for A Vision for Veritas: We are deeply grateful to the generous donors who have stepped forward in support of our capital campaign, A Vision for Veritas. Our capital campaign provides the financial resources necessary to bring to life the campus improvements detailed in our Master Plan. Of that $9.4 million raised, nearly $7.4 has been dedicated to the Arts Center, a $9.6 million project.

ara Collins ’16 is a senior in the midst of the college application process. While you might expect her to feel frazzled or stressed, Sara is neither. “I feel confident in the applications that I submitted for the early action pool because I spent a great amount of time working on the supplements and

essays and coming up with unique responses,” says Sara. “The college counseling program really helped me get ready.” She isn’t alone. By the time our students reach senior year, they are well prepared for the college process. The Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS) agrees.

Evaluating and improving the college counseling process is an important component of Goal One of the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan. A January 2015 audit by ACCIS applauded the work done to improve the program over the years and provided additional recommendations that have already been implemented. The audit found that a unique blend of personalized attention, knowledgeable and enthusiastic counselors, and a four-year tracking of test scores all make FSHA’s college counseling department top notch. “When I came on board four years ago, I wanted to develop a program that fit the needs of our students and the culture of FSHA,” says Candy Navarro, director of college counseling. “The report from ACCIS really validated the steps we have taken to revolutionize the program. It was great to hear from many different parties that we were meeting the needs of our students.”

In January of junior year, all students are assigned a college counselor. Besides multiple individual meetings throughout the year, college counselors go into the classrooms to facilitate essay-writing workshops. Students also have the opportunity to go on two college tours — an East Coast trip and a Northern California trip. In senior year, students

meet with their college counselors as often as every two weeks, when college counselors work to manage deadlines and anxiety. “The college counseling program is extremely personalized to each student,” explains Candy. “We assign students tasks to complete before their next meeting. They like that we start early, give deadlines and break the entire application process down.”

International students in the boarding program also receive a significant amount of personalized attention. College counselors hold weekly meetings in the evenings in the boarding hall during the fall semester, when students can get advice on their applications and their specific forms.

And while the girls are busy writing essays and filling out applications, the faculty is also hard at work. Candy holds college recommendation-writing workshops for faculty. “The workshops are quite beneficial, even for experienced letter writers,” says Sherrie Singer, assistant principal for curriculum and instruction. “Candy explains what the best letters entail—trends in the student’s academic life, character traits, work habits, personal anecdotes—and when to shed light on special aptitudes that the reader might not necessarily know.”

During their four years on the Hill, students use a college-counseling program called Naviance. Naviance stores all test scores and notes from academic advisors and college counselors over the four years of high school, helps students build their resumes and allows students to see which schools are viable options based on the students’ many academic and performance rankings. “Because they have access to all this information, students are very aware of where they stand in their class and in the college admissions process even before they get to junior year,” says Candy. When it comes time to decide on which colleges to apply to, expectations are realistic.

Not one to rest on its laurels, the college counseling department is moving ahead with other initiatives. Next up? Programming for freshmen and sophomores and the development of a comprehensive strategy for presenting FSHA to colleges. “By expanding college programming to 9th and 10th grades, we are able to better prepare students for the college application process,” says Candy. “When the students come to us in 11th grade, they need to be a competitive applicant already. Early programming will get them there.”

hen math instructor Simone Butera wants to gauge student comprehension, he asks students to break out their SMART board clickers. He poses a multiple choice question to the class and within seconds, Simone knows if he can move onto the next concept or if he needs to spend more time on the previous one. Down the hall, Dr. Lara Walker has her students

use the Photobooth application on their laptops for Spanish conversation practice. Students are able to save their conversations as movie files, and Lara is able to provide individualized feedback to each girl. And in Dr. Barrett Gough’s U.S. history class, students use an online program called Padlet to create online discussion boards about specific decades.

At FSHA, it’s not unusual for faculty to seamlessly integrate technology into their lesson plans. “I try to design assignments that allow for creative and scholarly expression in an array of media,” says Barrett. “At this point, we’d be foolish not to incorporate technology and new media. It’s a new and emerging form of literacy.” Since launching the 1:1 Laptop Program in the fall of 2012, it’s become one of the remarkable successes of the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

“A majority of teachers really want technology in their classrooms because they see the value in having it. It’s a good tool to help students work on their critical thinking skills, assess comprehension and expand their creativity...” — Jeannie Finley

“A majority of teachers really want technology in their classrooms because they see the value in having it. It’s a good tool to help students work on their critical thinking skills, assess comprehension and expand their creativity,” says Jeannie Finley, director of academic technology and library services. “In the first few years of using technology in the classroom, we did a good job prioritizing technology professional development for teachers as well. We’ve developed quite a few teacher tech leaders and celebrate and share successful implementation of technology.”

FSHA’s strong emphasis on digital citizenship—the thoughtful and appropriate use of technology—also makes the school’s technology use unique. “In keeping with our goal of providing a holistic education, we care how our students are using technology in and out of the classroom,” says Jeannie. “We see our technology program as having an important role in the development of each student, and we hope to help them develop a healthy relationship with technology.”

And if students want to delve further into the tech world, there are robotics classes and a beginning programming course, a tech team that works with the technology department and a Code Crew for girls who want to learn more about programming in their spare time. Hannah Scott ’17 is a fan. “Code Crew empowered me to learn more programming languages, which will give me a head start in my computer science classes in college,” says Hannah. “It’s created a supportive environment for me to deepen my understanding of programming while encouraging others to do the same.”

Karen Thompson’s Journalism class reviews a student’s digital media project.

FINANCIAL REPORTThe strong 2014-15 financial report is a testament to our guiding principles—financial priorities driven by strategic planning, the responsible stewardship of finances and working with budgetary guidelines. Fundraising is just as critical. Year-over-year growth in the Flintridge Fund, Gala and the Golf Tournament as well as our endowment funds ensure FSHA’s financial stability and ability to provide an outstanding, college-preparatory education.

Page 19: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Annual Report 2014-15

The enthusiastic and generous support of our alumnae donors to the Flintridge Fund makes a direct impact on the lives of our current and future Tologs. As alumnae who have lived the Flintridge Sacred Heart experience, your gift says that you still believe in FSHA and our ability to achieve great things. Thanks to you, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is able to continue to provide the resources our young women need to grow intellectually, professionally and spiritually.

DONOR ROLL e love to celebrate the generosity of our alumnae. With that in mind, we are introducing two new giving groups beginning in the 2015-16 fiscal year. We hope you will join us!

THE 1931 ALUMNAE LEADERSHIP CIRCLEThe 1931 Alumnae Leadership Circle recognizes the generous support of our alumnae donors who give $1,931 or more to the Flintridge Fund. Members receive special recognition throughout the year and are invited to a private dinner in appreciation of their generosity. FSHA is truly grateful for the extraordinary generosity of our alumnae, who set the tone for giving among our community and help ensure a bright future for today’s Tologs.

THE BRIDGE SOCIETYThe Bridge Society celebrates our most loyal alumnae who consistently support the Flintridge Fund year after year. Alumnae who make a gift of any amount to the Flintridge Fund for five consecutive years are recognized as members of the Bridge Society. For this consistent show of support, members of the Society are recognized with an elegant bracelet with special charms given at the 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 25- and 30-year milestones. A lifetime of giving by alumnae is a vote of confidence in what FSHA has been, what it is today and what it will become.

Dedicated. That’s just one word to describe FSHA’s faculty and staff. Whether it’s delivering an inspiring lecture, debugging student laptops or wearing a crazy hat for Spirit Week, our employees show their dedication everyday on the Hill. They also show their dedication by giving to the Flintridge Fund. This year marks our tenth for 100 percent participation by faculty and staff.

THE MOMENT IS (ALMOST!) NOW!re you ready to experience Flintridge Sacred Heart’s new Arts Center? We are! With less than six months until opening night, the excitement is palpable here on the Hill. Construction

• New exterior stucco walls were applied• New interior walls were installed• New sewage lines were laid• N ew HVAC system was installed (yes, we will have AC!)• New waterproofing and tile roof were installed• New restrooms and 3D classroom were framed

AOpening night in the new Arts Center is scheduled for Spring 2016, and our fundraising efforts have accelerated with urgency to reach our $9.6 million goal before the lights dim and the curtain rises for our first performance.

A very special thank you to all our donors who have supported the Vision for Veritas … the Moment is Now capital campaign. Your leadership and vision has helped us raise nearly $7.4 million toward our $9.6 million goal. You have taken us far and deserve a standing ovation!

But, we need help to get to opening night. There is still time for you to play a starring role in helping to bring a new stage for the arts for our students. Director of Advancement Shelly Wenker Schroth ’94 is ready to discuss your role in our growing cast of donors. Give her a call at 626.685.8396 or email her at [email protected] to explore how you can help us make this grand production a success.

Master Plan UpdateAlmost four years ago, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy presented its Master Plan, a vision for modernizing our campus to meet the academic needs of the 21st century while maintaining the quality of life of our shared

neighborhood. FSHA remains in the process of seeking approval from the City of La Cañada to modernize some of our almost 60-year-old facilities.

A revised draft of our Specific Plan was submitted to the City in May 2015 that addressed comments received from the City; on the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR), which was released in Summer 2014; and from the community. The revised plan eliminates the originally proposed Arts & Humanities Building, reduces the export/excavation cubic yardage and reduces the limit on the number of on-campus events. All other components of the plan remain the same.

The EIR will be revised by the City and re-circulated for public review at a later date. After public review, the plan will be presented to the City Council for approval. For more details, please visit visionforveritas.org.

Our latest plan prioritizes our immediate needs, and we remain deeply grateful to our community for its dedication, loyalty, and support during this process.

Page 25: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Annual Report 2014-15

Our mission is the driving force behind all that we do. It informs and directs A Vision for Veritas … The Moment is Now, our capital campaign. A Vision for Veritas raises funds to support the Master Plan, a multi-phased long-term reinvestment in our 42-acre campus. When our Master Plan is implemented in full, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy will have a campus that has been patiently and thoughtfully readied to support 21st century education for the young women we serve.

We are profoundly grateful to the following supporters for their leadership and partnership in this historic undertaking. Thanks to you, Phase One of the Arts Center began in January 2015. Soon, we will benefit from a modern Arts Center that appropriately showcases, supports and nurtures the remarkable talent of our student body. Thank you for your inspiring and generous commitment to Flintridge Sacred Heart.

The Mother Dolorosa SocietyMother Dolorosa was one of the three founding Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose who started Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 1931. Her leadership helped FSHA grow in ways no one could have imagined when she and her fellow Sisters traveled up the Hill with “a statue of the Blessed Virgin, a $5 bill and their faith.” We are honored to name our planned giving society after her.

The Mother Dolorosa Society celebrates the alumnae, parents, grandparents and friends who have remembered FSHA in their estate plans. Like Mother Dolorosa, the society members have made a lasting contribution to the mission of FSHA and generations of young women.

Membership is permanent and continues on a yearly basis as long as the gift remains in effect. Society members are recognized in FSHA’s Annual Report on Philanthropy and are invited to events periodically. The names of deceased members remain in perpetuity among those listed.

SHA said goodbye to a wonderful teacher, advisor and mentor, Sr. Mary Hilary Miller, O.P. on September 7, 2015. Sr. Mary Hilary was born in San Francisco, educated at Immaculate Conception Academy, and entered religious life in 1943. In 1950, Sr. Mary Hilary arrived at FSHA as principal of the elementary school. She eventually left FSHA to work at other Catholic schools

in California, including St. Catherine’s and St. Boniface in Anaheim, St. Elizabeth’s in Oakland and St. Francis Cabrini in Watts. Sr. Mary Hilary returned to the Hill in 1967 as the director of resident students.

Many students remember Sr. Mary Hilary’s nurturing, loving presence. “I arrived on the Hill in September of 1971, a nervous, lonely, boarder beginning my junior year in a strange new world. Sr. Mary Hilary was welcoming, kind, generous, firm when she needed to be, but always genuine and caring,” recalls Julie Wilson ’73. “Sr. Mary Hilary was an extraordinary person ... charismatic, fun, ready to laugh with you, huggable and so very dear to each of us in the grammar grades,” says Merriam Matook Olds ’55.

In May of 2015, Sr. Mary Hilary celebrated 70 years of profession. In her reflections she wrote, “The hills are alive with the sound of music … My heart sings songs of Thanksgiving and praise to God for so many blessings, especially for my Sisters, family, friends and students.”

IN MEMORIAMSHA suffered another loss this year when former faculty member John Wragge passed away. John grew up in Norristown, Penn., and spent his early adult life teaching at various colleges, lastly at a Dominican college in Columbus, Ohio. In the summer of ’84, he drove out to California to interview at FSHA. He then spent the next

18 years (1984 – 2002) at the school. During his tenure, John taught social studies, economics, German and English as a second language.

Faculty described him as a kind, gentle soul. “John was truly an old school gentleman. He always used to tell me that when teachers stopped wearing sports coats and ties (like me) that education began its long downhill slide,” remembers faculty member Mike Thornton. John is also remembered for his love for all Philadelphia sports teams, classical music, the VAPA performances, and the volleyball and softball games.

FSHA was a special place for John. His wife Carolyn remembers that “everywhere we went, even Gold’s Gym, former students would come up to him and give him a hug.” After John retired from FSHA, he dedicated himself to his classical music. Three years before his passing, he purchased his dream instrument, a Steinway piano.

John is buried in Pennsylvania and is survived by his wife and two stepdaughters, Sari and Valerie Gruber.

or 40 years, the community of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has gathered on the green to raise scholarship money for students in need. In celebration of this landmark year, the Harry G. Johansing Scholarship Golf Tournament and

Dinner was held in honor of five men who were integral to the beginnings of the golf tournament: John Krappman (in memory of his father, Andy Krappman), Angelo Mozilo, Bob Pernecky, Mike Smith and Tim Smith.

For the first time, the event was spread over two days during the Columbus Day weekend with the cocktail party and dinner on Sunday evening and the golf tournament on Monday. Even while teeing off, participants couldn’t help but reflect on the significance of this important event. “Nothing is better than helping these young ladies and their families,” said Honorary Chair Mike Smith. One such student had the chance to thank the crowd at the dinner on Sunday night. “Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has been a school that has enriched me in countless ways,” said Rebecca Calix ’15. “Without the benefit of the Johansing scholarship, my dream of attending Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy would never have been realized. I will never forget your generosity.”

Thank you to the following donors who raised their paddles in support of financial aid at FSHA. Their gifts—ranging from $100 to $2,500—have been added to the Harry G. Johansing Scholarship Fund, the largest endowment fund at FSHA.

lintridge Sacred Heart Academy is a winner! Just ask the crowd that gathered for “Run for the Roses,” this year’s Kentucky Derby-themed Gala, the largest fundraising event of the year. Decked out in bow ties and derby hats, guests were greeted by a Santa Anita Race Track bugler

and life-size (albeit fake) horse upon arrival. The derby theme continued inside the Main Building with equestrian chic décor and a bourbon-tasting bar. As night fell, everyone gathered on Senior Lawn for dinner, the chance to bid on exciting auction items, like a Santa Anita Derby VIP package and a Balboa Island vacation getaway, and the opportunity to raise their paddles in support of the new Arts Center. Needless to say, Gala 2015 was a huge success thanks to the generosity of the FSHA community.

All proceeds from Gala 2015 supported the Vision for Veritas … The Moment is Now! capital campaign, with approximately $45,000 donated during the paddle raise for the sound mixing console in the new theatre.

hilanthropy — your gifts — is what turns a good school into a great school! Your gifts enrich our students’ experience far beyond our exceptional academic program, which is mostly tuition-dependent. At Flintridge Sacred Heart

Academy, we are grateful that our community not only believes in a culture of philanthropy, but also actively supports this culture.

FSHA’s continued excellence depends on regular support from generous members of the community — current and past parents as well as alumnae and friends of the school. Each gift, no matter its amount, makes a vital impact on FSHA. There are several ways to make a tax-deductible donation to the school.

P

CASH, CHECK OR CREDIT CARDSYour cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or be charged to your Visa, MasterCard or American Express. You may also instruct the Advancement Office to charge your credit card on a monthly or quarterly basis.

MATCHING GIFTSYour gift could be matched dollar for dollar. Many companies offer matching gift programs that will double or even triple a donation’s value. Some companies match gifts by spouses and/or retirees. If you have questions about your company’s matching gift program, please contact your personnel office.

WAYS TO GIVE

STOCK GIFTSContributions of appreciated stocks, or other capital assets that have increased in value, can result in significant tax savings. The current full value of the gift can generally be deducted on federal and state income tax, and the capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation is avoided.

PLANNED GIVINGMembers of the Mother Dolorosa Society are a special group of generous alumnae, parents and friends who have chosen to remember Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in their estate plans. Wills, charitable trusts, bequests and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for a lasting legacy to benefit the future of FSHA.

For more information on any of the above ways to give, please contact the Advancement Office at 626-685-8400.

STAY CONNECTEDOur website, FSHA.org, is a great online resource for the FSHA community with ever-changing news stories, photo galleries and event information.
