The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain range in South Australia, located about 500km north of Adelaide. The range stretches over 430km with its most famous landmark, Wilpena Pound being our destination from where we will tour the area. Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre containing the range’s highest peak – St Mary Peak standing at 1189m high. Our accommodation is at the Wilpena Pound Resort, the only resort within the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park from where we can enjoy the incredible beauty of one of Australia’s largely unknown landscapes. From Wilpena Pound we head to the fascinating town of Broken Hill, an artificial oasis in the vast arid lands of far western NSW. ‘Beyond the Darling River, on the edge of the sundown’ is where they used to say you would find Broken Hill! Dominating the town is the ‘Line of Lode’ – the seven kilometre strip of what was the biggest deposit of silver, lead and zinc in the world. The vibrant colours and perfect light surrounding the area has drawn in film makers and artists to capture Broken Hill’s special quality for decades.

Day 1 (LD): CANBERRA TO HAY: Tuesday 18 September 2018 Welcome to our 9 day tour to the Flinders Ranges and Broken Hill. Today we load the coach and begin our journey. Not far from Wagga Wagga we break for lunch in the heritage town of Coolamon. We overnight in Hay and enjoy dinner at the motel. Cobb Inlander Motel, Hay (ph 02 6993 1901) Day 2 (BD): HAY TO BARMERA: Wednesday 19 September 2018 Following breakfast we travel the Hay Plain to Balranald where we make a morning stop. The $1.5m state-of-the-art Discovery Centre is worth a look through. Continuing on via Euston we make our way to Mildura where we can enjoy a lunch stop (own expense). This afternoon we cross the state border and head to Paringa for a stop to see Lock 5. Navigating the Murray River wouldn’t be possible without the series of locks and weirs dating back to the 1920’s and 1930’s. Fourteen locks are still in use today. Lock 5, just downstream from Renmark, is a great example of one of these locks. From here we travel through to Barmera.

Barmera Country Club (ph 08 8588 2888) Day 3 (BLD): BARMERA TO THE FLINDERS RANGES: Thu 20 September 2018 Departing Barmera we drive via the historic riverport of Morgan where we leave the Riverland behind us. We travel onto Burra for our morning break. Copper from Burra's ‘Monster Mine’ saved South Australia from bankruptcy in the 1840’s. It was the largest metal mine in the country employing 1000 people. From here we push onto Peterborough. The history of Peterborough is all about rail. The railways officially arrived in town on January 17, 1881 when the line from Jamestown opened. Soon Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Adelaide and the Silverton Mines were all connected by rail tracks that passed through Peterborough. It is also unique in that it is only one of two places in the southern hemisphere (Gladstone being the other) where broad (5'3"), standard (4'8½") and narrow gauge (3'6") railway tracks can be seen together. After lunch at a local café we travel through Orroroo and cross the Wilochra Plain on our way to Hawker. We are now north of the famed Goyders Line. This is where, in 1865, Surveyor General George Woodroffe Goyder marked on the map of South Australia a line delineating drought affected country. The line which passes through this area became an important factor in settlement planning in this state, being regarded as an indication of the limits of the lands considered safe for agricultural development. We will see from the many ruins on the Wilochra Plain, many early settlers didn’t take Goyders advice! We continue into the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park and the Wilpena Pound Resort.

Wilpena Pound Resort, Flinders Ranges (ph 08 8648 0004) Day 4 (BLD): THE FLINDERS RANGES: Friday 21 September 2018 This morning we are joined by a local guide who will show us this incredibly beautiful landscape. The Flinders Ranges is home to not only a vast array of wildflowers and wildlife but the rugged weathered peaks and rocky gorges have formed some of the most dramatic scenery in the country. Today we are shown some highlights including a stop at Razerback Lookout and Brachina Gorge. Later we visit Gum Creek Station for lunch (all touring today is subject to weather and road conditions). Later this afternoon we return to the resort where we have time to relax, take a walk or perhaps join a scenic flight (optional extra) over Wilpena Pound. Prior to dinner we drive to Stokes Hill lookout where we can observe the changing colours of sunset over Wilpena Pound whilst enjoying a refreshing drink and canapes. We then return to the resort for dinner.

Wilpena Pound Resort, Flinders Ranges (ph 08 8648 0004) Day 5 (BLD): THE FLINDERS RANGES TO BROKEN HILL: Saturday 22 September 2018 We retrace our steps back through Hawker and Peterborough stopping enroute for our picnic lunches. This afternoon the Barrier Highway will take us across the New South Wales border and onto our destination of Broken Hill. BHP was established here in 1885 after 3 friends pegged out a mineral lease at a rocky outcrop known as ‘broken hill’. During our visit here we will discover the town’s mining past, admire works of art by both local and international renowned artists and visit the interesting township of Silverton. Upon arrival we settle into our motel for the next 3 nights and freshen up for dinner.

Day 6 (BD): BROKEN HILL: Sunday 23 September 2018 A local guide will join us on the coach this morning for an introductory tour of this very intriguing town. We’ll see historic buildings such as the Courthouse (c. 1889), Trades Hall (1898) and the Town Hall façade, retained in 1974 after the main halls and offices were demolished. At the top of the Line of Lode we’ll see the Miner’s Memorial which lists the names of those who have died working at the mine. Later, after we’ve dropped off our guide, we visit the Pro Hart Gallery for a look at his unique works, widely admired for capturing the true spirit of the outback. He was nicknamed ‘Professor’ - hence Pro, in his younger days when he was known as an inventor. After free time to purchase our lunch we continue our touring with a visit to the Silver City Mint & Art Centre. Known as one of the best galleries in town, the centre houses jewellery made from local silver, a mineral display and an extensive range of original paintings by well-known artists. However, it is the dramatic ‘Big Picture’ painted by Peter Anderson that will be a highlight of the visit. It’s the world’s largest acrylic painting on canvas that totally immerses visitors into the local landscape. Our final visit today is to White’s Art Gallery. Kevin ‘Bushy’ White’s vision is to go underground without going underground. A visit to the museum will take us on an illustrated journey through the architectural and mining history of the city. Bushy’s mineral paintings are complimented with rare mining artefacts, underground memorabilia and models of mines sites. Our touring day complete we return to our motel to freshen up before dinner. Desert Sand Motor Inn, Broken Hill (ph 08 8088 4122) Day 7 (BLD): SILVERTON: Monday 24 September 2018 Today we head to Silverton after a slightly later start. Today it’s a virtual ghost town but a number of the historic buildings remain. More recently, Silverton has hosted film crews who have produced many well-known movies such as Mad Max 2, A Town like Alice and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Our first stop is to the Silverton Gaol & Historical Museum. Virtually every aspect of life in Silverton’s heyday is represented, with literally thousands of items on display. Tools of the trades of mining, transport, entertainment, technology, food, religion, sport, education and medicine are accompanied by a range of photographs, painting a vivid picture of Silverton’s early years. Not far is Mundi Mundi Lookout, located 5kms away. The view must be seen to be believed. The wide, flat heart of the Australian outback seemingly extends forever. On a clear day an illusion of the curvature of the earth can be seen! We return for lunch at the Silverton Pub where we will probably find the Silverton donkeys. Many visitors come to Silverton just to see the friendly, if not a little bit naughty, donkeys. This afternoon we head back to Broken Hill with time to stop in at ‘Living Desert’ to view the Sculpture Symposium. This is a nationally successful sculpture symposium situated on a majestic hilltop within the centre of a reserve. The symposium was completed in 1993 by artists from around the world, under the direction of organiser and artist Lawrence Beck. Thirteen sandstone sculptures highlight the skyline, all with a story to tell. Arriving back to town we have the remainder of the day at our leisure. Desert Sand Motor Inn, Broken Hill (ph 08 8088 4122) Day 8 (BLD): BROKEN HILL TO NYNGAN: Tuesday 25 September 2018 Before we depart town, we have time to stop by the iconic Palace Hotel. Erected as a coffee palace in 1889, the interior was used for many scenes in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It is definitely worth a look, even just to see the painted wall murals. We now begin our return journey home and travel east to Wilcannia on the Darling River. Legends were made along the Darling. Literary myths were created by Henry Lawson, Will Ogilvie and Breaker Morant. Kidman, Tyson and McCaughey created pastoral kingdoms of unparalleled proportions. The Light Horsemen of World War I were bred on these vast plans. We will make this our lunch stop today and head to the Wilcannia Golf Club. Continuing through Cobar we arrive in Nyngan ready for dinner and a rest at our overnight accommodation. Country Manor Motor Inn, Nyngan (ph 02 6832 1447) Day 9 (BL): NYNGAN TO CANBERRA: Wednesday 26 September 2018 On the home stretch, we make our way through to Narromine for our morning stop. Our morning tea venue is the Narromine Aviation Museum, located at the local airport, home to the oldest aero club in Australia. Over 2000 pilots lived and trained in Narromine during World War II. Visitors have included Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, Chuck Yeager and Nancy Bird Walton. During our visit we have the chance to view the museum and their static aircraft display. Leaving here we travel onto Parkes for lunch at the Parkes Services Club. This afternoon we express through to Canberra and Queanbeyan. We arrive home later today having had a wonderful tour to the Flinders Ranges and Broken Hill.
