PURE QUARTET BL ISS
Haydn String Quartet Op. 77, No. 1 in G majorShostakovich String Quartet No. 7 in F sharp minor, Op. 108Dvořák String Quartet Op. 96 in F major (American)Designed to highlight the skilled artistry of Flinders Quartet and the group’s reputation for imaginative and informed interpretations, this program was chosen to immerse ourselves into some of the greatest core repertoire by three masters of the string quartet. Each work has been chosen for the way it enables us to search for layers of musicianship: Haydn as the father of the string quartet, Shostakovich as the master of hidden musical meaning, and Dvo ák for the sheer joy of music making and the highest level in string quartet craftsmanship.

REINVENTIONSwith Genevieve Lacey (recorders) and Paul Grabowsky (piano)
Kats-Chernin a selection from Re-InventionsGrabowsky The Nightingale and the Rose*Schubert String Quartet No. 13 in A minor (Rosamunde)
* World Premiere commissioned by Flinders Quartet
For this program inspired by literature, we commissioned a new work from the legendary Australian musician Paul Grabowsky based on Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, and paired it with Schubert’s Rosamunde string quartet which uses themes from his incidental music composed for the play of the same name by Helmina von Chézy (Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern or Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus). In an exciting first, Grabowsky will also join us on stage using the seminal two part inventions by J.S. Bach as a starting point, followed by Kats-Chernin’s popular Re-Inventions for recorder and string quartet, and finishing with Grabowsky’s musical commentary on each Re-Invention - a reinvention of the Re-Inventions!

THE MAGIC OF PAUL DEANwith Paul Dean (clarinet)
Dean New Work* Wolf Italian SerenadeBrahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115
* World Premiere commissioned by Flinders Quartet with support from Richard Gubbins and Peter Kingsbury
In this program we celebrate one of the most inspirational contemporary musicians, Paul Dean, highlighting his genius as both a composer and performer. In a new work that reflects on the preciousness of youth and the wisdom of experience, Dean’s first string quartet is based on the life of young violinist, Richard Pollett. Wolf’s exuberant and vibrant Italian Serenade is counterbalanced by Brahms’ autumnal clarinet quintet; a work full of life’s beauty and the pain of regret.
