ian munro Divertissement sur le nom d’erik Satieravel String Quartet in F majorshostakovich Piano Quintet in G minor, op. 57 For our winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition ‘Flinders Quartet Prize’ we chose finalist, Dmitry onishchenko. Dmitry stunned audiences in Sydney with his arresting technique and thought-provoking interpretations. We are thrilled to welcome him to our stage for the emotional power of Shostakovich’s piano quintet. Bringing light into the darkness is Ravel’s luminescent string quartet in F major and Ian Munro’s Divertissement sur le nom d’erik Satie.

elena kats-chernin new work*beethoven String Quartet no. 7 in F major, op. 59, no. 1*World premiere commissioned by Flinders Quartet with support from Joyce evans
Beethoven, Kats-Chernin and Bartók have all used folk themes as inspiration for music that stirs the soul and gives voice to national pride. In his towering quartet op. 59 no. 1, Beethoven uses a Russian theme to pay tribute to the ambassador Count Razumovsky, while Bartók remains more earth-bound for his Rumanian Folk Dances. These two works cradle a new creation by elena Kats-Chernin; we always know we are going to love elena’s work!

flinders quartet
Flinders Quartet is instantly recognisable as one of australia’s most loved chamber music ensembles. a quartet for the twenty-first century, Flinders continues their second decade with acknowledged musical skill and maturity. Their dynamic and stirring performances of a full spectrum of repertoire have audiences and critics articulating their esteem, and the quartet is now a highly respected force in australian chamber music.
Since their formation, Flinders has regularly commissioned and premiered works by australian composers. In 2013, the quartet will premiere a new string quartet by elena Kats-Chernin, and a new work by Paul Dean is slated for 2014. Flinders has previously commissioned and premiered works by Peter Sculthorpe, Ian Munro, Calvin Bowman, Richard Mills, elena Kats-Chernin, Ross edwards, Stuart Greenbaum, and Katy abbott in their ongoing mission to further the australian tradition of chamber music.
In addition to presenting their own annual subscription season, the quartet is regularly invited to perform and tour for chamber music presenters such as
Musica Viva, and is in demand at festivals throughout australia where they often appear in association with some of the country’s finest talents, including Slava Grigoryan, David Thomas, Kristian Chong, Ian Munro, Paul Dean, Karin Schaupp and Genevieve Lacey.
Building on their 2006 Limelight award and identification amongst australia’s most influential artists, and nominated for both the 2007 and 2010 Melbourne Prize for Music, Flinders was nominated for a 2007 aRIa (australian Recording Industry association) award for their performance of Gillian Whitehead’s Bright Forms Return for string quartet and mezzo-soprano; and again in 2011 for their Fandango CD release with classical guitarist, Karin Schaupp.
For Flinders, 2013 is a season of new beginnings, with a performance schedule that includes their annual Melbourne and Sydney subscription series, concerts with SIPCa finalist and winner of the 2012 ‘Flinders Quartet Prize’, Dmitry onishchenko, a collaboration with internationally renowned percussionist Claire edwardes, the premiere of an elena Kats-Chernin commission, as well as recitals and masterclasses in various parts of metropolitan and regional australia.
