  • Flickr for History Family historians are finding Flickr is more than just affordable off-site photo storage. Its also an amazing place to share and discover others doing the same. Not only does Flickr have some impressive search features, it is also home to some amazing collections from archives and museums around the world.

This guide introduces Flickrs search features and shows how to put them to work in your research. In addition, you will learn how to make your photos easy for potential research cousins to find them - and you.

  • You can begin a search from almost any screen when viewing Flickr in a web browser. Just click in the search box on the toolbar and start typing your search criteria.

A basic search defaults to include public photos from everyone on Flickr. You can click the More search types option to limit the areas you want to search.

  • My search for Chickamauga discovered only one photo in my photostream but almost 1,000 from people I follow and over 21,000 throughout all of Flickr.

Notice that in this view, Im just looking at photos meeting my search criteria. Flickr also searches people and groups to find matches there.

Here are some of the groups that match my search.

  • All those colored buttons you see below have purpose in a Flickr search. Click on any color button to find photos that meet your search and are predominantly that color.

Click theAdvanced icon and expand your search options to include orientation, size, date range, content type and tags.

  • When the SafeSearch option is on, your search will only display images safe for all audiences. There is also a moderate option (bare breasts and bottoms) and an off option (full frontal nudity).

The Relevant option is used to determine how you want the search results to be sorted. Those options include relevant, date uploaded, date taken and interesting.

The Any licenseitem limits your results to a specific license option. In addition to standard copyrights all rights reserved license, Flickr supports the Creative Commons some rights reserved licenses and public domain. This makes it easier to find photos for use in presentations, blogs and other projects.

  • Your search results depend on the quality of metadata included when images are posted to Flickr. In this example, you see both the photos title and description include the name of the battleground. This photo is included in the users Chickamauga National Military Park album. Scroll down the screen and youll find a comprehensive set of tags including location, events and the names of individuals related to this photograph. All of these elements help make the image very search-friendly.

  • Its just as easy to search using Flickrs mobile apps - the iPad app in this example. Just tap the search icon in the toolbar and enter your search criteria.

This example shows the results of a search for Chickamauga in Flickr Groups. This search found 20 groups related to Chickamauga.

  • If you are lucky, your search might bring you a photo like this one at Flickr Commons. Some time ago, Flickr invited institutions such as The National Archives, Library of Congress and NASA to share selected collections in a special section called The Commons. Today there are more than 100 institutions from around the world participating.

The Internet Archive has posted more than 3 million images from their huge collection of books. Most of these images link back to the original digitized book. This image links to a history of the Michigan organizations involved in this battle.

  • If you find a photo that might be related to your family, you can contact the photos owner through Flickr.

The first option is to leave a comment right here on the photo page. If thats too public, click on the owners profile image to display the popup profile panel you see here, then click the Message item to take you to Flickr Mail. From there you can send a private message visible only to the recipient.
