1 Introduction The purpose of this document is to provide environmentally relevant information of aspecific NSN product.

This document shall not be interpreted as a specification, modification oramendment to the specification, or additional or other warranty of any kind. In caseof discrepancy between this document and the Product specification or terms and

conditions of the valid supply agreement between NSN and the customer, thesupply agreement and Product specification shall always prevail over this document.

1.1 Environmental benefits of Flexi Multiradio 10 BaseStation

When designing the NSN Flexi Base Station (BTS), the entire lifecycle fromproduction to deployment to use phase to end of life has been considered. NSN hasminimized the environmental impact of the Flexi Base Station in all four phases.

At production and end of life, the environmental impact of the Flexi Base Station isminimized as hazardous substances are avoided and the total amount of rawmaterial needed is significantly lower than that of conventional cabinet-type basestations. NSN is committed to energy-efficient manufacturing and to full complianceto European Union’s directives on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).

The compact size and weight of the Flexi Base Station modules (volume of roughly25 liters, weight < 25kg) has double positive impact for the deployment: First, alllogistics of transporting and installing the BTS are optimized. Smaller vehicles canbe used or more base stations transported in the same container.

No cranes are needed for installation. Second, owing to the modular, outdoor-capable and compact design, the Flexi Base Station can be deployed at sites that

are optimum from the radio network planning perspective, but were unattainablewith conventional cabinet-type base stations. In total, NSN estimates that thelogistics footprint is reduced by 80%.

Analysis of the CO2 footprint of the four phases revealed that the use phase isdominant. Therefore, measures have been taken to extend the use phase in a CO2

neutral way. NSN can look back on a successful track record in providing basestation capability and capacity by means of software upgrades rather than hardwareexchange. The Flexi Base Station provides for software upgrade within the radiotechnologies, for example from WCDMA to HSDPA to HSUPA to HSPA evolution orfrom GSM to EDGE evolution, but also for software upgrade to LTE. Indeed, NSN is

the only company that has started shipment of LTE capable hardware already in thethird quarter of 2008.

The total CO2 footprint of a base station during the use phase is basically defined bythe product of duration of the total use phase and the power consumption. Seechapter 4.2 Product use phase CO2 footprint for more information. Leading globalCSPs confirm that the Flexi Base Station features best-in-class power consumptionthat enables energy savings of up to 70% for base station sites. This is achieved bythe revolutionary, modular and outdoor-capable design and the highly efficienttechnology within the modules, in particular in the RF Module, as the power amplifierare the part with the highest power consumption within a base station. See chapter4.1 Product energy consumption for more information.

On base station site level, the Flexi Base Station enables further energy savings, as

no auxiliary equipment for transport (backhaul) or air conditioning is needed. Siteefficiency can be further increased by avoiding the feeder loss between the RFModule and the antennas. The Flexi Base Station supports two types of the so-called feederless sites: In the distributed base station architecture, only the RFModule (or Remote Radio Head) is mounted close to the antennas while the SystemModule is placed somewhere else. The alternative scheme is to mount the RFModule and System Module close to the antennas, which is possible only thanks tothe compact and outdoor-capable design of the Flexi Base Station. For rural siteswith high towers this alternative scheme offers the additional benefit that noadditional material, e.g. fences or vandalism protection, is needed at the bottom ofthe tower.

4.3 Materials

4.3.1 NSN Substance List

NSN values the protection of the environment and the preservation of naturalresources high on the agenda, and thus undertakes great efforts to design itsproducts to be compatible to the global environmental requirements. As a part of this

work the NSN Substance List has been created, which is used together withsuppliers as a tool in managing material and substance selection for parts andcomponents to be included in NSNproducts.

Based on the above, NSN products are designed to meet, and are in compliancewith relevant material and substance legal requirements applicable to NSN products

Page 13: Fleximrlbts 10 Envi Prod Decl-0900d805809d0eac

in the markets where the products are sold, such as but not limited to EU RoHSDirective and REACH-regulation.

NSN Substance List has two categories of substances: the restricted substancesand the monitored substances. The restricted substances are either totally forbidden

in NSN products, or restricted up to certain levels. The monitored substances areexpected to be reduced or gradually phased out of NSN products. The SubstanceList is not strictly limited to applicable mandatory substance legislation but includesrestrictions of substances and materials beyond mandatory legislation. This enablesNSN to provide products which are ahead of minimum substance restrictions.

NSN Substance List is subject to continuous improvement due to changes inlegislation, but also due to the improvement of technologies, and knowledge abouteffects of substances in light of further scientific evidence. In the ramp-up phase ofNSN’s own production as well as in the requirements to suppliers, the NSNSubstance List will be applied. Compliance with Substance List is naturally expectedand required from hardware product suppliers.
