WELCOME TO CALTHORPE PARK

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Fleet Town is an unincorporated association, managed by a committee, currently comprising of the following individuals: Alec Grant, Richard Whittington, Harry Cannon, Darren Edwards, Sam Waters and Nathan Cookson.

Good afternoon, Happy New Year and welcome to Calthorpe Park the home of Fleet Town F.C. for today’s Evo-Stik League South Division 1 South fixture. In particular the Committee, Players, Management and supporters of our visitors Highworth Town who have travelled up from the Swindon area. Unfortunately the Christmas and New Year fixtures proved to be very tough for us as we struggled to contend with injuries, suspensions and availability of players. Although we were well in all the matches and in fact at times dominated them, we failed to break the losing run that we have been on since late November. Anyway we have to put that behind us and move on to today’s game against Highworth Town. They have just come up to play in the Southern League for the first time in their history and have made a pretty good start at this level. They currently lie in 14th position having taken 25 points from their 21 games played. Although they did suffer a heavy home defeat to high flying Evesham United in their last game on New Years Day. Highworth Town will be difficult opponents but as always we will be giving it our best shot to make it a winning performance. We were delighted to see possibly our most famous ex player Leroy Rosenior given an M.B.E. in The New Years honours list. Leroy has campaigned relentlessly to kick racism out of football and all sport with considerable success. This excellent ongoing work was rightly recognised and honoured. Well done Leroy we are very proud of you. We hope you enjoy the game today and as always we thank the home fans for their amazing support which is really appreciated. ‘Come on you Blues ‘

A Brief History of Highworth Town F.C.

Highworth Town football club was formed in 1893. We joined the Cirencester & District league and it took us some time to record our first honours, until 1909-10 in fact, when we won both the Swindon Junior Cup and the local Advertiser cup, which was a Cup we captured again in 1912-13. After winning the Cirencester & District League Divison Two championship in 1931-32, we moved to the Swindon & District league, where we completed the third Division championship and Swindon Junior Cup double in 1933-34.

The 1950s saw us make a dramatic rise through the local football ranks. We won the Swindon & District league Third division title again in 1954-55 and then the Division two title the following season. One more season was needed to clinch the Division One title and also the Wilts Junior cup. we then, went on to win the premier division title in 1957-58, along with the Faringdon Thursday Memorial cup and the following season we were the Premier Division champions again, also winning the Advertiser Cup. We continued to dominate the Swindon & District Premier Divison in the 1960s, winning four successive titles from 1960-61 and another hat-rick from 1965-66 to 1967-68, making seven titles in eight seasons. We reached the final of the Wilts Senior cup for the first time in 1962-63 and won it the following season. There was then a switch to the Wilts Combination League, where we finished as runners-up in Dvison two in 1970-71. 1972-73 saw another Wilts Senior Cup victory and all this success prompted us to join the Hellenic Lleague. We achieved our first honours in 1988-89, winning the First division Challenge cup and reached the final of the wilts senior cup yet again.

We finally achieved Premier Divison status in 1993-94 gaining promotion after finishing third in Division one. since then we have been winners of the Wilts Senior Cup in 1995-96, 1997-98, 2008-09 and again in 2014-15, winners of the Hellenic Challenge Cup in 2011-12, winners of the Hellenic Supplementary Cup in 1998-99 and runners up in 2003-04, runners-up in the Premier Division in 1999-00 and winners of the Premiership title in 2004-05.

In more recent history, which reached the semi-final of the F.A. Vase in 2014-15 where we were knocked out by the eventual winners North Shields in a closely fought two-legged tie. this season also saw us pick up the Wilts senior cup.

In the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons we were runners-up in the Wilts senior Cup to Swindon Supermarine and Chippenham Town respectively, both of which played at higher levels than us.

In the 2017-18 season we saw promotion to the Southern league Division 1 South as we finished as the best third placed team across the whole country. this means we are now playing the highest level of football the club has ever been at.

FLEET TOWN YOUTH

After a great unbeaten run unfortunately our Youth team succumbed to their first league defeat of the season just before Christmas. The defeat was in the in the home game against Guildford City and ultimately ended in a 4-0 reverse. The lad’s next game is home to Alton on Monday 7th January 2019. This is a must win game for them to keep pressure on at the top of the table. With Fleet Spurs and Camberley looking to pull away this is vital. The youth team play their home games at Calthorpe Park and if you are free the £4 entry fee is well worth it to see them play good passing football. You never know you may see a future star of the Fleet Town 1st team.

Fleet Town Ladies are having a pretty good season in the Hampshire County Women’s League Division 2. The league is a large one of 13 teams of which a majority are in the Southern regions of the County. After four consecutive defeats the ladies bounced back with a league victory against Fordingbridge Turks just before Christmas. The ladies won 2-1 and this has now moved them back up to 4th place in the league. This is a great achievement given the young age of the team. Fleet’s Ladies next home game is against Widbrook Reserves tomorrow Sunday 6th January 2019, kick off 2pm, all support gratefully received. C’mon you lady blues!!!!!
