PreInstallation

1. Reviewyourpackinglistandmakesureyouhavereceivedallthepartsbeforebeginning

installation.

2. Ifyou

are

going

to

be

turning

off

the

water

to

the

house

and

you

have

an

electric

water

heater,

shutoffthepowertothewaterheaterbeforebeginninginstallationincasewaterheateris

accidentiallydrained.

3. Pickasuitablelocationforyourfiltersystemonadrylevelspotwhereitwontbeexposedto

freezingtemperatures. Aminimumof20PSIisrequired. Maximumpressureis90PSI.

4. Getallofyourplumbingpartstogetherbeforebeginninginstallation. Installationtypicallytakes

3to5hours. HoweverafterinstallationtheGreensandFiltermustbeallowedtorunthrougha

completebackwashandrinsecycle(alsocalledregeneration). Youdonthavetobepresent

forthisfirstbackwashnecessarily,butitdoestake90minutes.

5. Afterthesystemisinstalledandrunning,yourwatermaybediscolored,orfullofsedimentor

rust,particularlyifthisisolderpipingthathasbeenexposedtoironormanganeseforsome

time. Typicallythisclearsupoveradayortwo,butcanpersistforweeksifthepipeisold

galvanizedironpipethatiscorroded.

BestPracticesforPiping&DrainInstallation

1. Seetypicalinstallation(seeFig1). Thegreensandfilterisinstalledafterthepressuretank.

2. MakesuretoconnecttheinletpipetotheFleck7000inletandtheoutlettotheoutlet(seeFig

2).AsyoufacetheFleck7000controlfromthefront,thewaterentersontherightandexitson

theleft. Fromtheback(seeFig2)thewaterentersontheleft. Theinletandoutletare

attachedtothebypassvalvewhichismarkedwitharrowsaswell.

3. MakesurethereisaworkinggateorballvalvebeforetheFleck7000Greensandfilterandalso

oneafterasshowninthediagram. Thepressuregaugesareoptionalandnotnecessarybuta

hosebib(whichisafaucetthatyoucanattachagardenhoseto)isstronglyrecommendedafter

theGreensandFilterbeforethesecondballvalve. Thismakesiteasytorinseyournewiron

filteron

start

up

and

gives

you

aplace

to

test

the

water

before

it

enters

your

household

plumbing.

4. Ifyouwillbeusingcopperpiping,donotsweatthecopperpipedirectlyontotheFleck7000

controlvalve. AvoidheatinguptheFleck7000controlvalveplasticwiththetorch.

5. YoudonotneedunionstoinstallyourFleck7000control. Ifyouneedtoremoveit,theFleck

7000hasquickreleasecouplingsthatmakeiteasytoputtheGreensandFilteronbypassand

removethefiltersystemfromthepiping.

6. Thedrainlinetubing(notsupplied)isconnectedtoadrainfromthedrainoutletusingflexible

ID

tubing.

Note

that

the

drain

can

run

up

above

the

Fleck

7000

control

and

into

adrain,

it

doesnothavetodraindown,asthefilterbackwashesunderlinepressurefromyourwellpump.

Mostplumbingcodesrequireanairgapconnection,sothatifyoursewerorseptictankbacks

up,itcannotcrossconnectwiththedraintubing.

1. UnscrewbyhandtheentireFleck7000controlvalvefromtopoftankifitwasshippedscrewed

on. Placedistributortubeintankifnotalreadyinsidetank. Ifnotalreadydone,makesureblue

capisontopofdistributortube,orwrapthetopofdistributortubewithelectricalorducttape.

Theidea

is

we

do

not

want

gravel

or

media

to

go

down

the

distributor

tube

when

you

are

addingmedia.

2. Addfiltergravelsuppliedfirst,usingthefunnelsentwiththegreensandfilter.

4. Removecaportapefromtopofdistributortube. Becarefulnottopullupdistributortube

whenremovingcaportape.

5. Ifpossibleatthispoint,filltankcompletelywithwater. Thiswillallowthegreensandmediato

settleandeliminatetheneedofpurgingtheairoutofthetanklater.

6. AddasmallamountofvegetablecookingoiltothetankthreadsandscrewonFleck7000

controlvalvecarefully. Alternativelyyoucanusesiliconegrease,butdonotusepipejoint

compound,Teflontape,orVaselineorotherpetroleumgreasestolubricatetankthreads.

7. SeehowtheFleckbypassisconnected. NotethatItems2inFig5belowarethepipe

connectorsandtheotherendiswhatgetsattachedtothecontrolvalve. Items3arethered

clipsthatholdthepipeconnectorstothebypassvalve. YourFleck7000isusuallyshippedin

thebypassposition.

8. Lubricatethebypassvalveoringswithsomevegetableoilorsiliconegreaseandconnectthe

bypassassemblytotheFleck7000controlbyslidingthebypassvalvefirmlyintothebodyofthe

Fleck7000.Oncebypassisinfarenough,youwillbeabletoinserttheredconnectorclips.

9. Nextlubricatetheendconnectorswithsomesiliconegreaseorvegetablecookingoilandinsert

theminto

the

bypass

valve

and

then

insert

the

red

clips.

10.NotethattheFleck7000isusuallyshippedinthebypassposition. Thereisabypassvalveknob

onboththeinletandtheoutlet. Youcaneasilytellifitisinbypassbecausethetwoholeson

thebypassknobwillbeintheverticalposition. IfthevalveisintheServiceposition(bywhichis

thefilteringpositionorinserviceposition)theholeswillbeinthehorizontalposition.Make

surebothsidesareinthebypassposition.

11. Inthefuture,doNOTremovetheredclipsinordertoputthebypassvalveineitherbypassor

service,itisnotnecessarynordesiredtoremovetheredclipsonthebypassvalvehandknobs

(seeFig5item1,whicharetheknobsyouwillturntomovethebypassvalves).

12.NowinstallyourwaterpipestotheFleck7000bypassendconnectors. Makesureinletis

installedtothe'In"pipeconnectoronthebypassvalveandoutletisontheOutconnector.

13.ConnectsomeflexibletubingfromthedrainconnectionontheFleck7000controlvalvetoa

suitabledrainsuchasaseptictankordraintoasewer. ItisOKtorunthedrainlineupandover

theFleck7000greensandfilterupto4feetabovethetopofthetank. Ifthedrainlinewillbe

morethan20feet,uselargerdiametertubingsuchasor1. Notethatitisdesirabletobe

abletorunthedrainlineintoabucketinordertotestthebackwashflowrateinthefuture.

Thisiswhyhardpipingthedrainlineisdiscouraged,however,ifyoudousehardPVCpipingfor

the

drain

line,

and

you

are

able

to

remove

the

hard

PVC

drain

piping

and

attach

flexible

tubing

shouldyoueverdesirefortestingpurposes,itisOKtouserigidPVCpipeforthedrain.Make

surethedraintubingisfirmlyclampedtothebarbedfittingwithahoseclamptopreventleaks.

14.Forthe2.5cubicfootsystemsonly: theselargertanksystemshaveanexternalstainlesssteel

flowcontrolthatcomeswiththesystem. Thismustbeinstalled.Ifyouhavea1.0or1.5cubic

footsystem,theflowcontrolisinternalandthereisnoexternaldrainflowcontrol.

15.Takeoutthefloatassemblyandremovetherubberbandinstalledforshippingthetank,if

presentonthefloatassembly. Reinstallthefloatassembly. SeeFig6.

feltpad. Addone5lbjugofpotassiumpermanganategranulestothepotassiumpermtankby

pouringitdirectlyontopofthewhitefeltpad. Donotpourpermanganatedownthewhite

plasticbrinewellwheretheblacklineisattached.

18.Seethe

over

flow

barbed

fitting

on

the

side

of

the

perm

tank.

You

do

not

have

to

connect

to

thistoadrain. Ifthesafetyfloatweretomalfunction,thereisasmallchancethatpotperm

solutionwilldripoutofthisfitting. Ifthiswouldcauseabigmesswhereyouhaveinstalledthe

greensandfilter,hooksometubingtothisandruntoabucket,floorpanorfloordrain.Normally

nopotpermsolutionwillleakoutofthisfitting.

19.Nowyouarereadytoturnonthewatertothesystem. Turnonthewaterandleaveonbypass

andcheckforleaks. Leavetheballvalveafterthegreensandfilterclosed,sowaterisstilloffto

thehouse,butconnectagardenhoseandopenupthehosebibafterthegreensandfilterand

allowthewatertorun. Thiswillhelptoclearoutanyforeignmaterialthatmaybeinthepipes

fromthepipinginstallation. Ifyoudonothaveavalveinstalledafterthegreensandfilterand

youdonothaveahosebib,youwillneedtoturnthewateroninsidethehousetoletthewater

run.Useabathtuborlaundrysinkorotherfixturethatdoesnothaveanaeratorscreen.

20.Leavethewaterrunningoutofthegardenhoseataslowrate.Nowyoucanturnthebypass

valvetotheserviceposition. YoudoNOTremovetheredclipsonthebypassknobsinorderto

turnthebypassvalvesfromthebypasstotheserviceposition. FirstopentheInletSideofthe

bypassvalve. SecondslowlyopentheOutletSideofthebypassuntilitisinthefullservice

position. TheFleck7000bypassvalveknobsarealittlestiff,soyoucanuseascrewdriver

placedintheholestoturntheknobs. Makesureyouareturningthebypassvalveknobsinthe

correctdirectionwhichiscounterclockwiseasyoufacethebypassvalveknobs.

21.Nowturnonthegardenhosetofullforceandletthewateruntilitturnsrelativelyclear. The

watermaybedarkorblackatfirst.

22.YourGreensand7000controlvalveisalreadypreprogrammed. Allyouneedtodoistosetthe

timeofday,andthensetthenumberofdaysthegreensandfilterwillrunbeforeitbackwashes

andregeneratesautomatically. Thedefaultnumberofdaysbetweenbackwashisseven.

23.Startbysettingthetimeofdaybypressingtheupordownarrowsuntilitisthecurrenttimeof

day.

24.Holddown

the

up

arrow

and

down

arrow

at

the

same

time

for

5seconds.

Set

the

time

of

the

nightthatyouwantthegreensandfiltertobackwash. Thedefaulttimeis2:00am. Pressthe

ExtraCyclebuttononce. Nowsetthenumberofdaysbetweenbackwashes,thedefaultis7

days.Ifyouhavealargefamilyandahighlevelofiron,youmaywanttosetthebackwash

frequencytoevery3to4days. NowpresstheExtraCyclebuttononcemore. Youaredone

programming!

25.Yourgreensandmediamustberegeneratedbeforeyoucanusethewater.Startamanual

backwashandrinse(alsocalledregeneration)bypressingorholdingtheExtraCyclebuttonfor

5seconds.

26.Atthispointthegreensandfilterwillbeinabackwashmode,whichisthefirstoffivecyclesit

goesthrough

during

regeneration.

The

backwash

takes

10

minutes.

After

10

minutes,

the

Fleck

7000willbegintosuckupthepermanganatesolutionfromthepermanganatetank.

27.Afteranother10to15minutesthepotpermtankwillbesuckeddryoftheliquidpotassium

permanganate. Checktomakesurethatthepotpermtankisemptyafterthiscycle.

28.After60minutesofbeinginthisCycle2,referredtoasthebriningcycle,itwillmovetothenext

cycle,Cycle3,whichisa5minutesecondbackwashcycle. Thenextcycle,Cycle4isa10minute

rapidrinse. FinallyCycle5refillsthepotpermtank.

29.Checktomakesureattheendofthecyclesthatthepotpermtankisfilledwithenoughwaterto

coverthe

felt

pad

by

approximately

to

1inch

for

a1.0

1.5

cubic

foot

size

filter

and

2inches

if

youhavea2.5cuftsizesystem. Youcanchangethelevelofpermanganateliquidbyadjusting

thelevelofthefloatassembly. Formostusersthoughitisnotnecessarytoadjustthefloat,it

comessettothecorrectlevel.

30.Aftertheregenerationprocessiscomplete,turnonthewatertothehouseandrunthewaterin

thehouseforafewminutes.

31.RefertoyourFleck7000servicemanualformoreinformationabouthowyourcontrolvalveis

programmedifdesired.

MaintainingYourGreensand7000FilterSystem

AddingPotassiumPermanganate:

Addone5lbjugofpotassiumpermanganateevery3 4months. Checkthepotassiumpermanganate

solutiontankandwhenyouseethemoundofpotassiumpermanganatedisappearafterafewmonths,

justaddanother5lbjug. Insomecases,youwontseethemound,youmightjustseesolutionaftera

coupleofweeks. ThisisOK,youstillonlyneedtoaddthepotassiumpermanganateevery3monthsin

mostcases. Ifyouhaveitsettoregenerate(backwashcycles)every13days,youmightneedtoaddit

morefrequently,perhapsevery2months.

CleantheInjector

Onceayear,cleanthepermanganatesolutiontankand

thebrineinjector.

1. Shutoffthewatertothefilterorputthefilteron

bypass.

2. ReleasewaterpressurebypressingtheExtra

Cyclebutton,orshutoffthewatertothehouse

byclosingtheballvalveafterthegreensand

filter,andreleasethepressurebyopeningupthe

hosebibafterthegreensandfilter.

3. Pulloutredclip#3(seeFig9)usingasmallflat

screwdriver.

4. Pryout#8CapInjectortoreveal #15injector

screen,and#7injectorassemblyusingsmall

screwdriver.Cleaninvinegarormuriaticacid.

5. Reinstalltheseitemsandtesttomakesurethe

injectorisdrawingavacuumbyremovingthethe

3/8blacktubingfromthepotpermtanktothe

controlvalve,attheopening#9.

6. Turnthewaterbackonandreturntoservice

position.

7. PushtheExtraCyclebutton. Wait10to12

minutesuntiltheGreensand7000controlvalveis

inthebrinedrawposition(Cycle2). Atthispoint,

itshouldbesuckingavacuum,whichyoucan

determinebyplacingyourthumboverthehole.

8. NotethatifyoudoNOTwanttheFleck7000controltogothroughallthecycles(whichtakes90

minutes)youcanpresstheExtraCycletoadvancetothenextcycle. Waituntilthe7000control

goestothenextcycleandpresstheExtraCyclebuttonagainandcontinueuntilthecontrol

valveis

back

in

the

service

position

and

displaying

the

current

time.

9. Nextcleanthepotassiumpermtankbyremovingthefeltpadandcleaninginmuriaticacid,citric

acidorvinegar,orbetteryetjustreplacingthefeltpadifyouwant. Cleanthefloatandrinsethe

potpermtankout. Itsbettertouserubbergloveswhenyouaredoingthistoavoidthe

possibilityofstainingyourhandswithpotassiumpermanganate. Ifyourhandsdobecome

stainedyoucancleanthemwithvinegarorlemonjuice.

1. RemovethepermanganatesolutiontanktubingwhereitenterstheFleck7000controlvalve.

2. PresstheExtraCyclebuttonandholdforseveralsecondsuntilabackwashisstarted. Afterthe

displaystopsblinkinganditsinabackwashcycle,presstheExtraCyclebuttonagain,arnditwill

advancetothenextcycle,whichistheBrineCycle,whereitissupposedtosuckinthe

permanganatesolution.

3. Ifissuckingstrongly,checkthepotassiumpermanganatesolutiontankfloatinsidethebrinewell

andmakesurethereisnorubberbandsaroundit,andthatisfreeofobstructions. Insome

casesitmayneedtobereplacedorcleaned,ifthereissuctionatthecontrolvalve,butno

permanganateisbeingdrawnin.

4. IfthereisNOsuctionatthecontrolvalveportwhereyouremovedthepermanganatetubing,

thentheinjectorshouldbecleaned.

5. Iftheinjectorhasbeencleanedandthereisstillnosuctionchecktomakesurethereisobstruction

inthe

backwash

line;

that

the

backwash

line

does

not

go

up

and

over

the

greensand

filter

more

thanseveralfeet(whichcausespressurelossandtheinjectornottoworkcorrectly);finallycheck

tomakesurethereisenoughpressure. Ifpossibleincreaseyourwaterpressuretotheironfilter

fromyourwellpumpandseeifaslightlyincreasedpressuremakestheinjectorwork. We

recommendaminimum30PSIbutitdoesworkbetterifthereis40to50minimumPSI.

SystemNotBackwashingAdequately

Theothersecondmainproblemthatmayoccurisifyoudonothaveenoughbackwashflowrateto

properlycleanthegreensandfilter. Youcanverifythebackwashflowratebyrunningthedrainlineinto

abucketandtimingitwhentheFleck7000isinCycle1orbackwash. A1.0or1.5cubicfootsystem

shouldhave

5gallons

per

minute

and

a2.5

cubic

foot

system

should

have

10

gallons

per

minute

of

backwash.

SystemNotProgrammedCorrectlyPROGRAMSETTINGS

Insomecases,theFleck7000maynotbeprogrammedcorrectly. Verifythecorrectprogrammingby

Insomecases,theFleck7000maynotbeprogrammedcorrectly. Verifythecorrectprogrammingby

followingthesesteps. IMPORTANTNote: doNOTfollowthesestepsifyourFleck7000hasaflow

meterbasedregeneration. Ifyouhaveaflowsensor,seetheseparateguideforprogrammingthe

Fleck7000withaflowsensor). Followthesestepstomakesureitissetcorrectly:

Potassiumpermanganateisapowderthatispouredontopofthegridpadin

thepotpermtank. Duringthebrinefillcycle,waterisaddedtothepotperm

tanktomakeupthepotpermsolutionrequiredforthenextregeneration.

Ifyourpotpermdoesnothaveto1ofsolutionabovethegridpad,thefirstto

checkistomakesureitisfillingthetank:

1. Disconnectthe3/8blackpolylineatthepotpermtankoratthecontrol

valve.

2. PutcontrolvalveintoaREGENcyclebyseeingPage14Program

Settings. YoucanadvancetotheBrineFillcyclebypressingExtraCycle

buttonagain,toskipthroughthecycles.AdvancetotheBFcycle.

3. IfitISfilling,removethesafetyfloatandmakesuretheaircheckballis

movingfreeandnotstuck. Astuckfloatisoftenthecauseofthis

problemandcanbeeasilyfixed. Ifthefloatisdefectiveorolderthan5

years,replacefloat.

4. IfitisNOTfillingduringtheBrineFill(BF)cycle,thenmakesurethereis

enoughminutes.Itshouldbesetfor12minutesforstandardsizeClack

potperm

tanks.

tank,

set

for

20

minutes.

5. Ifitisstillnotfilling, thebrinevalvemayneedtobecleaned. IntheFleck

7000SXTmanual,inthediagramValveAssemblyseethepart9,which

isthebrinedrainlineflowcontrol. Cleanthisfirst. Ifthereisstilla

problemanditisnotfilling,cleanand/orreplacethebrinevalve5.
