PRESIDENT’S CORNER

By Tom Martin

Hicks Airfield – Springing Forward!! This is the weekend I hope everyone looks forward to. Remember to set your clocks ahead this weekend so that you may enjoy a little extra sunshine. We should take some time out for things we enjoy and spend with family and friends.

Of course you have noticed that our airfield has never looked better than this year thanks to Jerry Althouse, our mowing guy. Probably time for all of us to get our mowers and weedeaters tuned up to insure we don’t wait too late to start our lawn maintenance also.

Please check out the information in this issue on our first Social Event March 23 at the Colonial House -great Mexican food- be sure to RSVP for dinner count. Cary Spivey and Mary Reddick are heading up some great events this year and I think that everyone will have a great time.

Our airport is springing forward as well as the time change this weekend. It remains a thriving and exciting place to be……our hangars are full with hobbies and projects that give us enjoyment. Make it a point to greet your neighbors every day and give back to our association with your expertise on our committee’s if possible. Please remember this is your airport and our monthly Board of Directors Meeting will be held March 14 at the Beacon Café. Best Regards,

T

Pilots N Paws, saving the lives of innocent animals!

By Mike Reddick

Ever get tired of all the $100 hamburger flights and wonder what else you could do with your plane? A couple years ago one of my nieces mentioned that a co-workers husband was flying dogs on the weekends in his Bonanza for a rescue group called Pilots N Paws. My interest being sparked, I went to www.pilotsnpaws.org to check them out. We have airlifted dogs rescued from kill shelters in south Texas and southern Oklaho-ma over the last year. Most of our rescue flights have been pups of large breeds or adults of small breeds like beagles or terriers due to my RV’s small baggage compart-ment. I have enlisted the help of other local pilots if a larger dog needs help.

Bonding At Monett, MO One Year Later

Sometimes it’s a multi-leg flight where you do a transfer from and/or to another pilot. The most rewarding flights are when you actually get to deliver the dog to his new “forever home” family, as they are referred to. If you’re an animal lover, you probably wouldn’t do this if you weren’t, it’s a very rewarding experience. What’s in it for you? Well, besides the satisfaction of knowing you saved an innocent animal from being euthanized, part of your flight expenses can be considered tax de-ductible as many of the rescue groups that utilize PnP’s services are 501c3 approved. Check out their website and I hope you find some interest in joining. You might even wind up in the local newspaper!
