Flanders : treating the world's sweetest tooth

You will not be surprised to hear that chocolate is a true Belgian/Flemish icon theworld over. Each year, over a billion euro worth of the world's best chocolates "madein Flanders" is shipped to chocolate-loving palates across the globe.

Meanwhile, worldwide exports of the delicacy have been going from strength tostrength. Flemish manufacturers have managed this by marrying traditional crafts-manship and ancestral recipes to a dynamic innovation drive in line with ever-changingmarket trends and consumption patterns: new flavour variations, health and functionalranges (no-added-sugar, reduced-fat, low-carb, low-calorie, fibre-fortified, vitamin-enriched, sustainably sourced, organic, single-origin, high-cocoa content,100% cocoa-butter based…).

Global chocoholics really are spoilt for choice in Flanders. Luckily, they can now fallback on the present report as a great sourcing tool for "all things sweet". It includes company profiles of over 100 Flanders-based firms, all vying for the atten-tion of "sweet-seeking" taste buds. Praline chocolates, bars, snacks, tablets, honey, chocolate spreads, marmalade, marzipan, nougat, mints, lollipops, chews, toffees, gums and jellies, marshmallows, choc coins, pâte de fruits…, you name it, it's all inthere. Also featuring, are companies manufacturing the equipment these treats are made on.

While you are poring over this report, we reckon you might be tempted to call usFlanders Indulgence and Treats. Well, just for this once you can call us that, but after-wards, we would prefer to be called by our familiar name again…

…Flanders Investment and Trade : into the land ofmore than chocolate…

Some may argue that chocolate is about the only thing Belgium - and Flanders for thatmatter - is worth knowing for. Allow us to prove them wrong !

Flanders does have a lot more to offer in a wealth of sectors and industries. The region is quite "resourceful", to say the least, when it comes to matching interna-tional market opportunities and a strong, export-driven economy.

Are you out there sourcing quality suppliers of goods and services ? Or planning to setup or expand operations in Europe ? Either way, Flanders is your preferred option and Flanders Investment and Trade yourideal sourcing partner.

None so far

A 3rd generation descendant, raised in a Flemish family withchocolate running through its veins (his grandfather used to workat the reputed Callebaut factory), Kris Dooms is man with a truepassion for the traditional artisan chocolatier's craft. The Doomsrange includes some real classics that have stood the test of timeand its changing tastes, whereas other varieties have brought atouch of the innovative to time-honoured recipes, using a selectionof only the finest and purest natural ingredients. Some may callDooms a "chocolate purist" and quite rightly so, in that he mostcertainly is not one to turn out mass-produced confectionery otherstend to pass off as "premium Belgian chocolates". He also uncom-promisingly adheres to the most stringent reference standards onthe Belgian premium-quality chocolate market; In 1997, Kris Dooms took over the presidency of Fenaco, the RoyalAssociation of Belgian Chocolate Makers and Confectioners, aposition he still holds to this day.

Yvette Ledoux is a woman chocolatier boasting about 35 years ofchocolate-making experience: after a 17-year stint at an industrialchocolate company,in 1989 she decided to set up shop as an inde-pendent artisan chocolate-maker. Over the years, business hasgone from strength to strength, leaving her no other option than tomove production to new semi-industrial premises. From there, she turns out a well-rounded product range with no compromisesmade on ingredients (natural ingredients, finest Belgian choco-late, no artificial colouring agents, nor preservatives added…);Yet, the artisan tradition was not entirely banned from the manufac-turing process: some vital stages in gourmet chocolate-making arestill performed the traditional way (hand-moulding, hand-piping offillings, hand-painting or decorating); She is a regular hostess togroups of chocolate enthusiasts visiting her workshop.

CHOPRABISCO and FENACO: sweet associations…

It is no wonder that a chocolate-mmaking nation like Belgium should boasttwo ttrade associations, covering the entire national sweets manufacturingbase.Fenaco, the Royal Association of Belgian Chocolate Makers andConfectioners, has roots strretching as far back as 1916. Its membershipincludes over 62 mostly small too medium-ssized artisan chocolate-mmakersand sugar confectioners with a family-oowned company tradition. Yet, someof them have since outgrown their small or even medium-ssized status anddeveloped into major confectionery household names with ann impressivetrack record on the global export market. The association promotes its craft members' interests and provides themwith a unique platform for exchannging trade-rrelated, hands-oon information catering for their every-day, technical nneeds.Over the years, Fenaco has developed a working partnership with Choprabiisco, the other Belgianprofessional confectioners' association and co-aauthored a comprehensive joint self-rregulatory sys-tem for food safety and traceability in the chocolate, confectionery, biscuit and pastry industries. These mandatory food moonitoring systems are validated and supervised by FAVV, the BelgianFederal Agenccy for the Safety of the Food Chain.

The forementioned Choprabisco is the Bellgian Royal Association for the Chocolate, Praline, Biscuitsand Confectionery Induustries. It promotes the interests of its 85 member companies, ranging in sizzefrom SMEs through to multinationals. In addition to representing and defendingg the common interests of its members with various discus-sion partners on a national and European level, Choprabisco is also active in the following areeas:

• Providing the industry with relevant information on existing legislation regarding manufacturingand marketing of sweets (e.g. legislation on chocolate and cocoa-pprocessing, export refunds,European sugar policy, innovation;

• Promotion acrosss the board of the image of the Belgian sweets industry, e.g. by making aavailablebranch reports and publications.

Choprabisco is a member of FEVIA, the Belgian food industry federation. FEVIA's membership con-sists of some 280 commpanies. Furthermore, it encompasses some 25 trade associations, each rep-resentting a specific branch of the food industry.

FEVIA FLANDERS operates within the national FEVIA association. Within the integrated decision-making structures off the parent organisation, FEVIA FLANDERS defends the interests of theFlanders-bbased food industry.

Through a direct involvement in their core sectors both CHOOPRABISCO and FEVIA have access to awealth of information, which is continuallly kept up-tto-uupdate.
