Preface

Olympia calls the world’s youth

this book the attempt is undertook to catch the world of international sport from the point of view of the vexillology. The entanglements in the international sport are various and very complicated. First of all, every sport tries to be Olympic. Other sports are kept from partici-

pating the Olympic Games. Those non-Olympic sports federations founded 1967 the GAISF ( General Association of International Sports Federation ). That is how it succeeded to install the World Games as an alternative to the Olympic Games. All international sports organizations had world championships through. Nevertheless, the Olympia win stays the aim of almost all sportsmen and sportswomen (expect may be football [ Soccer] ). In this book only the international sports federations are presented which are members of the IOC or GAISF. Not recognized associations or profit organizations could not be taken into consideration. In some of those the situation is partly difficult to survey: Among the professional boxing 4 federations are competing- WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF. Among tennis exist separate organizations for men (ATP) and women (WTF). Or among Lacrosse there are one international federation for men and two for women. American football there is no international association yet. Some sports might be unknown to the reader. The explanation of the rules was let out on purpose. If required appropriate technical literature should be consulted. To the sources All sports federations that are presented in this book were written to directly. Many sports organiza-tions answered willingly and detailed. Often inquire were needed. Of some associations only a verbal description of the flag exist. In those cases the flag was reconstructed (marked with rec.) and slight differences from the original might be possible. Whenever a federation did not answer the information was taken from their official website (marked with www). Also in this case slight mistakes might be possible, because websites are often designed by foreign companies.

International Umbrella Organizations 71 GAISF – General Association of International Sports Federations In the 1960’s, more than any other sports official of his time, Roger COULON, president of FILA, felt and expressed the needs brought about by the rapid evolution of the sports movement. The recognition of a more important role for the IFs ( International Federations ) was needed. He and his friends wanted to see the IFs better control the evolution of international sport. For the non-Olympic federations, a forum which would permit them to better express their points of view was necessary. Common measures should be able to be adopted. The creation of a stable organization assuring the permanence of relations of the IFs between themselves, Olympic or not, no matter what their statutes might be, thus appeared to a lar-ger number of officials the logical continuation of the meeting which took place frequently but without rules or fixed organization. The common preparation of these meetings with the IOC could thus better assured. It would also permit a constant liaison between the IFs and the outside world. W (rec) IWGA – International World Games Association The idea of the World Games had been started in the seventies by a group of International Federations in GAISF, who were all waiting for inclusion in the program of the Olympic Games bur realised that the pos-sibility to be included was very limited. Their ambition was to create a comparable international multi-sports event for their sports, which could provide their athletes with an opportunity to show their perform-ances and to obtain media exposure. One of the major differences with the Olympic Games is that participating in the IWGA does not require the construction of new and possibly expensive sports installations by the Host City. When a facility for a specific sport is not available in the Host City, this sport discipline will not be included in the official sports programme. M/R MWU – Maccabi World Union In 1927, during the 12th Zionist Congress in Carlsbad, the delegates of the Jüdische Turnerschaft decided to set up a new central organization, the Maccabi World Union. In the constitution of this new organiza-tion, its aims were clearly defined: “to foster physical education, the belief in the Jewish heritage and the Jewish nation, and to work actively for the rebuilding of our own country and for the preservation of our people.” The very name Maccabi pointed to the new Zionist orientation of the world union. The saga of the original Maccabi celebrated at Chanukah, signified the courageous fight, thousands of years before, for freedom of conscience and religion, for autonomy and sovereignty – the very goal toward which mod-ern Zionism strove. Maccabiah ( Sport Games): 1st 1932 in Tel Aviv, 2nd 1935 Tel Aviv, 3rd planned 1938, in reality 1950, 4th 1957, 12th 1985, 16th 2001 Founded : 1882 in Turkey (1927) Number of affiliated national federations: Sport clubs in 49 countries Motto: “A sound mind, in a sound body” (unofficial) Logo: The blue emblem showed four Hebrew letters which spelled Maccabi in the form of a Jewish star.

International Umbrella Organizations 81 Flag: M.W.U. used to have a flag. The last flag that was in use has been lost. There were two previous flags, but each had a different design and a different colour. You might say, therefore, that the flag is decorative rather than symbolic, and that its specific design has no ideological significance for the move-ment.
