THE MTDDLB OF THE month of November can mean only one
, tiling in Indiana, that being the start of "Hoosier Hysteria". Snow
, storms may come and go, blizzards even can only midly effect
• this disease, Christmas makes only a Blight improvement in the convalescent stage and everyone walks around just a little in a fog as basketball, the king of Hoosier sports, takes over. Normal boys in schools become statewide
'-heroes, local kings or leader of the bad guys to opponents. Per
sonalities change, normally quiet people become raving maniacs, and any man who has enough nerve to run around a gym floor in a black and white stripped shirt blowing a little whistle, is the target of the boo birds from the Michigan State line to the banks of the Ohio.
BASKETBALL, SEASON IN Indiana, is something else. For
many years basketball was "It" in sports to Hoosier lads. Now, with the school consideration program eliminating the number of schools in the state, a much moro varied athletic program is c o m i n g to every school, but still that period from November 1 to about the third Saturday in March, basketball is still king.
INDIANA HAS LONG BEEN known for its basKeiDan and the-boys from the high schools all over the state -have certainly maintained their own all over the country. Ail-Americans have popped up from the Atlantic to the Pacific and not just from the large schools of Indiana, but every place that has enoungh room to put up two backboards, has contributed to the program.
BASKETBALL GETS THB official nod to star* D'aotice on October 1. Most coaches take
Posh Pineapple Fuff F o r Parties
Pineapple Growers Association Photo This cool puff of a pineapple souffle is a beauty to serve for summer parties. It stands high, light and handsome with beaten egg whites, gelatin and whipped cream. Distribute c a n n e d crushed pineapple generously throughout the souffle for tangy, tropical flavor. This handsome pineapple dessert can be made several hours or a day ahead of time so there's no last minute preparation.
CHILLED PINEAPPLE SOUFFLE 4 cpfs 1 teaspoon salt X (l-j;ound 4</2-ouncc) can 2 tablespoons lemon Juice
crushed pineapple 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 envelopes unflavorcd gelatin Vz teaspoon almond extract
advantage of this although some schools with football programs where the same boys are compet-in both sports, doesn't get with the meat of the practice until around the first of November. Actual competition can begin on November first and it isn't unusual to see the rcuni ball start flying about this time if football isn't in the sports program.
ALONG WITH Til.,: MORE modern way of life we live, habits of people, young an J tIJ alike, chan_?;t>. nais have become a major pari of many high school students a way OL We, but cars or ho cars there-. Is always time to flip the oil ball ai that 18 inch hoop mounted < n a pole, side of a garage or ba.n. This is the place basketball players are made. 'Die i aunued practice is the thin ;s that makes a 3hooter Lke OSJS.I- llccrtson, Jimmy Rayl or Bob Wared. These boys have that desi. e r.nJ have certainly been a real part of basketball hiat.;ry in in .ir.na.
T H E N E W SBACON S E T TO start for most schools this week, will brin % about many more headlines. New names will be appearing before the public as they will become household words as they progress in this great sport. Maybe a local boy who used to deliver your paper or carry your groceries at the neighborhood store will emerge as the big star this year. It might be a returning name that will continue to set the pace and move to the top like cream in a can of milk. It might be your son or nephew, boyfriend of your daughter, or just the kid next door who used to be just a little to mischievous to settle down to anything like basketball.
BASKETBALL IS KING AND treats those who play royally. It is a rare day, but always the one that gets the publicity, when an athlete gets into trouble. Take the number of cases handled by the juvenile officials and then take the number- of atheltes involved and you will find the Jimmy Ward cases or the Jim "Goose" Ligon case are the exi-ception and not the rule.
PARTICIPATING IN A DE-manding sport like basketball can keep a boy well occupied. It also gives the boy one more thing, that being leadership and the ability to accept orders all at once from a person that many put on the same pedistal as their parents, that being their high school coach. The influence a coach can have on a boy is tremendous. More boys have probably been talked into continuing their education after getting out of high school by a high school coach than all the other teachers in the school system. Often a boy "follows" his coach into this profession, taking education in college and majoring in physical education to be a coach like the one they so remember from high school days. This is often seen in the similarity of coaching tactics and even the way the coaches handle the boy.
YES, BASKETBALL IS STILL king in Indiana and in return, it treats those who follow it like kings as well. A great lesson can be taught from competition and also the burning desire of winning and the heartbreak of losing. Later in life these three assets can man more to a person than all the book learning and instruction they have received as school kids. Welcome the return of the "King of Indiana."
V3 cup sugar 1 cup whipping cream Separate eggs. Beat yolks with undrained crushed pineapple. Udd gelatin mixed with 2 tablespoons sugar and salt. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat about 5 minutes until gelatin dissolves. Remove from heat; blend in lemon juice and flavorings. Time for Injun Joe to leave th CHS battlegrounds so until next week -- WOH. (That's "How" spelled backwards.)
THE MAN BEHIND THE TEAM
Injun Joe brings us many more good gossips from his Tepee stationed at the battle grounds of Culver High. Let's drop in and see what Injun Joe has for us this week.
Congrads to all the candidates for Homecoming Queen.! Wish you all the best of luck!
Kitty, donx Do disappointed that the band didn't play your songs Saturday night. You still have plenty of time to hear them at the junior dances. (Paid political announcement)
How were the SAT tests, Seniors? Weren't you kind of cold Karen?
The halls of good Ole' CHS are plastered with posters supporting our teams. It really makes you feel proud to belong to a school with so much spirit, way, I must admit it's a novel S. By the way, who showed you how to put up the flags, anyway?! I mush admit it's a novel approach.
If anyone has lost a penny', please contact Pam S. H~ she's found one.
What's this? The mighty seniors are going to rake leaves with the sophmores ? I hear they really appreciate the chance to earn more money for their trip. Thanks, Sophies!
Two more of our mighty seniors have signed up at the draft board. You say it took you all morning, Rex and Brian?
Attention! There is now a new Navy Recruiting Center. Anyone interested should attend first or fifth period civics class.
T H E Y E L L O W C L U B S T I L L L I V E S ! ! (another paid political announcement).
The guys on the wrestling team are really enthusiastic about their sport but really-Chuck and Phil, don't you think that wrestling with Phil's dog, Spot, is going a bit far ?!

The manager of the Athletic Department is the little inconspicuous being shadowing the team to whom no one really stops to give any consideration to. It's time we gave him some recognition and praise.
The manager is the coach's right hand man. He has a variety of responsibilities to the team. He is the one who hands our uniforms and equipment. Ho takes on the menial tasks of cleaning basketballs, sweeping and mopping floors, and scouring the bathtub and shower. He washes mountains of sweaty uniforms, dirty socks, and grimy towels, plus sorting and folding them. He is the team's own little doctor when it comes to jammed fingers and pulled muscles. His is the soothing hand with the liniment. The manager is the one to whom the coach and players let off steam in crucial moments.
The manager's tasks arc big ones, and he is as important to the team and coach as is the star runner, center, or pitcher. So to the managers of the Culver High School Athletic Department we say a hearty Thank You.

THE SHADOW HOVEL SURVEY By Cindy Carter
F L A S H : Q U E E N F O R A D A Y ! As the stately Miss MT
marches proudly into the royal palace of CHS, she manages to step on toes with a royal air about her. Then she steps proudly and quickly to the popular window on the top of the school where she discusses a popular current problem of teenage queens-boys! With her books she makes her debut in English—where she pours forth all of her knowledge to Mrs. England, proving she is indeed empty.
In Health and Safety she tells many interesting experiences relating to the subject on hand of course. What's a better way Miss MT can participate in class than telling about something of which she knows all about—herself!
Third period brings Miss MT to General Businss. She isn't very mathematical-minded so it has to be general.
Fourth period will find her in the first aid room (royal blood). Lately a hurt finger has resulted in a faint H- SO if you go in and find the cot four deep, don't be surprised at all because this is a daily happening for this period.
Noon hour is spent on a worthwhile project of snitching cokes from the friendly neighbor coke-man-a poor unsuspecting subject.
In study hall Miss MT talks to friends and writes notes. She watches the clock also, waiting for the period to end.
Miss MT then trots to room 7 where she learns about such famous people as Cornyfucious and Castro. Mr. Waxman calls it history, but for Miss MT it is extra credit. This is the only subject she talks about in class so will anyone who knows something different for extra credit that Miss MT can do—plase contact Mr. Waxman before he goes bald.
The last period of the day was used for the study of children-royalty of course — in Home Economics I I with Mrs. Winters. The reason of this subject is that the teacher was nice enough to bring it down to Miss MT's level.
This is a day in her life. But it is for only a day so the royal palace of CHS has disappeared and there stands Miss MT in magnificnt glory as she transforms into M A R C I A C L E M , a great sophomore of the Class of 1970.

CENSORSHIP By Susie Donnelly
Libraries are supposed to be establishments in which one can acquire books with which to augment his knowledge. Books are the instruments of learning. It is through books that one learns of people and of the world. Yet many of our libraries today censor books and magazines by either refusing to buy them or by keeping them under the librarian's desk where impressionable children can't get their hands on them. I'm not talking of smut, but rather I'm speaking of good literature which is considered vulgar and fifthy because it contains a few hell's or damn's. It is true that many of these books are crude and disgusting, but then so is life. People consider it immoral to let naive children read these coarse books; however, it is much more immoral to give them a perfume-smelling picture of life by sheltering them from the truth and to, then, suddenly send them ignorant into a fierce world. Libraries are established to increase knowledge by providing books to aid our understanding of life. Why do they defeat their purpose by employing the hypocritical practice of censorship ?
By Norma Davis and Pam Scott
What is your favorite book and why ?
Pam Welsh— One of the most memorable books I've ever read is "1984" which was quite a controversial story. I t gave a story of what could happen if we of the world aren't careful. I was very much impressed with its descriptions and liked it immensely for its future predictions. I hope we never face the situations of this book and that the world will begin the long road to lasting peace.
Phyllis Kelly— My favorite book is always the one I'm reading at the moment, which happens to be '''The Speculative Philosphers." It contains part of the Big Vedas,. the sacred book of India.
Janet Helhejj, - - You haven't read anything until you've read Tolkein's books "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of Rings"! They're the best books I've ever read and I'm sure you'd agree with me if you; read them. They require imagination and a lot of time but the time is worth it! A lot of my friends have read them, and we can hold long and interesting conversations about them.
Carol Kline— I think I'd have to say my favorite book is "A Man Called Peter by Catherine Marshall. It's a ' good book because it makes you realize how one person can change your life completely and influence others at the same time, and it dwells upon one of the most important things in a person's life, religion. I think if more'' high school students would read this book, they would be mdre; aware of what their purpose in- life is.
Suzi Riester •— "Of Human Bondage, by William Sommerest Maughm; "Gone With the Wind", by Margaret"" Mitchell; and "1984" are some of the books I have read and enjoyed most.
Perry White..,— I do not think it possible to- name a favorite book. There is something to be gained from every book that is read. All of the books that I have read are my "favorites".
Fred May My favorite book would have, to be "The Ugly American". It exposes some of the ways other, powers have of taking over countries. The book Was very interesting and kept moving at a steady pace, never dull.
P.A.R. — I like the book "Jack be Nimble, Jack be Quick, the Cow Jumped over Little Red Riding Hood" the best because I thought it was funny when the Mad Hatter had to chase Cinderella, who was "chasing the Wolf who in turn was chasing Little Red Riding Hood so he could get the candle for .Jack to jump over.
The human brain is a wonderful thing. It starts working the moment you are born, and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.
TEOPHY '67 By Kathy Tasch
and Debbie Triplet If you were an athlete at CHS,
what trophy would mean the most to you? Would it be the Joe Zeller's Award, a basketball sectional trophy, a relay, trophy, the powder trophy, or a cross-eountry trophy ? Your preference probably depends on the sport you participate in, but the trophy most coveted by the individual is the Herman Sayger Award. This award is presented to the outstanding senior boy who participates in some form of athletics, shows scholastic ability, and develops the most in character, preserverance, and concentration. The recipient ia selected by a committee consisting of a member of the varsity basketball team of 1914, a businessman, the coach, and the principal. The award is sponsored by Herman Sayger of the Class of 1914. In past years Tone Shaw of Culver has been the delegate from the 1914 varsity basketball team. In 1937 Kenneth Kemple was the first to receive this coveted award, but who knows who will receive it for this year's activities!

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to thy name, O • most High; to declare thy steadfast love in the morning, and thy faithful'
ness by night." ' > — Psalms 92:1,2
How often do you thank God? Are you grateful for good health? For loved ones?
I For the success that is yours in business?
Most of us, when we want something very much, do not hesitate to pray. And, when our prayers apparently are answered, we are grateful. We
i may even say, silently, Thank you, Lord."
| Why not, just once, thank God for a bright and clear day, for the touch of a friendly hand, for all that is your 6hare of the world in which you live?

At least once every minute this season, some hunter
will be using chain lightning • to connect with his bird. | And the double action bars • on a Remington Model 870
pump shotgun will have paid off again. I

like a million.

Sooner or later, that day comes, the day when a woman feels she's changing. It's not a good feeling either. A n d she could use a good old-fashioned medicine then.
Could be you feel a little edgy, or maybe cross. You might even have what we call hot flashes and feel sad and slightly off-balance.
Whatever you feel, we have something for the dny you need a little comforting. Lydia E . Pinkham Tablets. They're made with gentle, natural ingredients that work to give you a better sense of well-being.
With an old-fashioned problem like this, couldn't you take an old-fashioned medicine?
Lydia E . Pinkham Tablets and Liquid Compound
As dangerous as home fires can be today, consider the p l ight of the American l iv ing about 125 years or so ago. The odds were against them al l the way.
The i r f irst p rob lem was the telegraphic fire a la rm box on the corner. I t was locked. To prevent false alarms, the key to the box was kept i n a nearby store.
Then there was the fire depar tment .
According to the Federated Insurance Companies of Owa-tonna, Minnesota, the first half of the 19th century was the heyday of volunteer fire b r i gades. The system was a colorfu l one, and remarkably effect ive. B u t i t d i d have a few weaknesses.
I n thei r struggle to be the first and the best at every fire, firefighters as w e l l as the " c r a c k e r s-and-cheese boys" who ran alongside every t ruck, were sometimes harder to cont r o l than the fires they fought.
T w o brigades i n New Y o r k , for example, were suspended after a free-for-all over the use of a fire hydrant . T w o others got the same treatment when they fought over wh ich w o u l d go first on a na r row street. They never d id make i t to the fire.
Occasionally a water ho'se j was sliced or a t i re flattened, land one or two firemen rushing ' into a bu i ld ing to rescue a v i c t i m were knocked out by other volunteers w i t h s imi la r intentions. ' The incidents made for good stories at the lavish Firemen's B a l l , but i n 1853 the ci ty fathers o f Cincinnati decided this type o f r iva l ry was not the most effective way to fight fires. They established the first permanent, pa id fire department, and most other major cities fo l lowed suit dur ing the next 20 years.
The idea o l paying firemen had been t r ied on a small scale by Boston almost 200 years before, when bucket brigades
proved ineffective a g a i n s t devastating fires.
B u t most American cities relied on their volunteer firemen. I n 173G Benjamin F r a n k l i n took the first step toward the glor i ous days of the fire brigades when he organized Philadelphia volunteers into a t ra ined group, g i v i n g each man a specific assignment at the scene of the fire.
Pr ime consideration of the volunteer firefighter was always the honor and reputat ion of his c o m p a n y . B u t he had another incentive — also thanks to Ben F rank l in i n his capacity as founder of the first Amer i can fire insurance company. Like the E n g l i s h firm on, wh ich i t was modeled, Frankl in ' s "Philadelphia Contr ibu-t ionship for the Insurance of Houses f r o m Loss by F i r e " placed a dist inctive metal "f ire m a r k " on the bui ldings i t insured.
Fi remen soon learned that preventing t o t a l loss of a marked bui ld ing meant rewards f r o m the insurance company.
Today's firefighters are professionally t rained. Their equipment is a far cry f r o m the o ld hand-pumped water tubs used as late as the 18G0's. And they aren't afraid of sabotage f r o m another engine company at the scene of the fire.
B u t there's one par t of the volunteer fire brigade's opera-l i o n that might be viewed w i t h a l i t t l e more nostalgia. Jobs for the crackers - and - cheese boys included keeping a plent i fu l supply of l i q u i d on hand for the ha rd - w o r k i n g volunteers.
Water? Nope. Whiskey, g in and brandy.
A g r o u p of w o m e n were d i s cuss ing an u p c o m i n g cos tume b a l l . One l a d y said, "Since w e have been asked t o w e a r somet h i n g t o m a t c h the co lor of o u r husband 's ha i r , I guess I ' l l have to w e a r b l ack . " A n o t h e r l a d y l e t ou t a gasp, and repl ied, " W u p s ! I guess I j u s t w o n ' t go ."
A d v i c e o f t en f a l l s f l a t , b u t a k i n d w o r d is l o n g remembered .

At least once ever) minute | this season, some hunter 1
will be using chain lightning to connect with his bird.
And the double action bars on a Remington Model 870
pump shotgun will have paid off again.,
Double action bars give the 870 its lightning speed ' and effortless action. Over a million 870 shooters can
so testify. And they can tell you some other solid
facts: A receiver machined from solid steel. A breech block that locks into the
barrel extension. A finish that looks'
like a million.
