DESCRIPTION

A story about changing lives

TRANSCRIPT

From Stafford:

To Martos:

THE STORY CONTINUES.....

So five years later and the Sampson Family are still happily living and working in Martos, Jan. The children Jacob and Anna are now 11 and 9 years old and are fairly close to being perfectly bilingual. They have no problems at school and on the contrary are a valuable asset to the classroom, especially during English class.

My husband Joe, after only two years working in an English Language Academy, studied for and passed his oposiciones exams and is now working as a high school English teacher in nearby Porcuna. He taught secondary education back in the U.K so although there are obviously plenty of differences, he is in an environment that is natural to him. In fact although he describes the children as extremely loud and talkative he has an enormous amount of affection for them and claims they are less malicious than their English counterparts.

I have faired, not exactly less well, but my progress has been slower than the others. I have dabbled in giving private English classes and worked for the odd academy but never really felt satisfied with this kind of work and presumed it was because teaching was not for me. However when I embarked on a succession of posts as an auxiliar de conversacion I realised that it was not the job I hated just the nature of private classes. The experience of working in state schools and being part of a system designed to give a complete language learning experience to all sectors of society was very rewarding indeed. So much so that in October 2011 I started a Masters course in secondary education in order to follow in the footsteps of my husbands and try make it two funcionarios in the family! Wish me luck, for it's a long, hard road with no guarantee of work at the end. But my eyes are open and I've lived the experience once by proxy so we will see! One thing is for certain, although at times friends and family are sorely missed, we feel that this little corner of Andalusia is most definitely home, sweet, home.
