 Location

• Absolute location: the exact location of a

place; to describe the absolute location of a

place geographers use lines to measurelatitudes and longitudes.

• Relative location: the location of a place

compared to or relative to another place.Relative location maps show the

relationship between places.

Place

• Place refers to the physical and human

factors that make one area different from

another. Physical characteristics are natural

features, such as physical setting, plants,

animals, and weather.

• Human characteristics include cultural

diversity and the things people have made,

including language, the arts, and food.

 Region

• A region can be as large as a continent or as

small as a neighborhood. A region has

certain shared characteristics that are set it

apart. These characteristics might include

political division, climate, language, or

religion.

 Movement • Transportation is the movement of people

and goods.

• Communication is the movement of ideas.

• Both types of movement take place because

people and resources are scattered.

 Human-Environment Interaction

• Human-environment interaction

refers to ways people interact with

their environment, such as building

a dam, cutting down a tree, or even

sitting in the sun.

• People have always adapted to the

environment in which they live.

They also change the places in

which they live.

• Break into groups of 3 and give an oral

presentation on the five themes of 

geography.

 Homework 

• Use the newspaper, magazines, pamphlet, flyers, etc. (whatever is the most readilyavailable) to cut out an example of each of the five themes of geography (Use your notesto help you find examples.):

• Location

• Place

• Human Environment Interaction

• Region

• Movement

• Paste or tape the examples to a piece of paper, leave room for some writing.

• Next to each example you cut out, write what theme it represents and a sentence statingwhy it represents that theme.

Ex. Human Environment Interaction : (Picture of Crenshaw Middle School) This pictureshows Human Environment Interaction because it portrays the school on stilts.Crenshaw Middle is constructed on stilts to protect from damage by water, waves orshifting soil or sand.HINT: If you have a question, ASK - don't wait until the homework is due!
