What courses are need to become a correctional officer? Correctional Officers must complete a sixteen-week, formal, comprehensive training program at the Basic Correctional Officer Academy. All facilities require candidates to be U.S. citizens who are at least 18-21 years old. Officers must be younger than 37 if applying for a federal prison position. Individuals must have high school diplomas or equivalency certificates and no felony convictions. This career also demands physical fitness, keen senses and strong judgment. Employment typically entails passing drug screenings, background checks and standardized tests.
