BY TORI PAJARES [email protected] Not even a year after it first opened, the Wellness Plaza at Kiwanis Park in Ponchatoula has received its first award. The Louisiana Municipal Association awarded the Ponchatoula Wellness Plaza with the Community Development Award for the 2015 Most Innovative Project in the State for cities with populations of 3,000 to 10,000. The Wellness Plaza began as a small spark at the Art Station and became a reality when it opened to the public Dec. 11. The centerpiece is a state of the art Motion Wellness System which includes 18 exercises to help adults strengthen their balance and coordination. Completed in a record six-month period, the Wellness Plaza was made possible by 32 local businesses and service organizations that donated $65,000. Mayor Bob Zabbia said a successful community is based on partnership. “The city and the businesses embraced it, and we couldn’t have done it without it,” he said. The award from the LMA comes at just the right time as the City is embarking on Phase II of the Wellness Plaza. Planned along the existing walking path that surrounds the Plaza, Phase II will include four stations that provide higher impact exercise equipment, a bench, receptacle, light and water fountain. Zabbia said the second phase will not be as extensive as the first. He hopes to begin planning in September and to start construction by the end of the year. The mayor has been contacted by several businesses wishing to help. The Strawberry Festival Board and Carter Chiropractic have already given donations for the construction of Phase II. For more information or to donate, call Rhonda Sheridan, the mayor’s executive assistant, at 985-386-0741 or Kim Zabbia at the Art Station, 985-386-8815. http://www.hammondstar.com/news/ponchatoula-adult-fitness-center-receives-award-for-innovation/article_ 05993812-b858-5d74-b9db-cea4b0daec9b.html Ponchatoula Adult Fitness Center On the opening day of or Wellness Plaza, senior adults surrounded us with hugs of appreciation: ‘Thanks for remembering us!’ and ‘I can really use this!’ Xccent’s Motion Wellness system is first class, not only in its safety features, but also in the company’s passion for its purpose.
