• La cantidad de BNC en el plasma y su concentración en plasma, reflejan un balance entre dos procesos: la producción y el aclaramiento (∼ 4 mg/kg/día)
• La concentración de BNC es directamente proporcional a la tasa de intercambio de bilirrubinas (TIB), e inversamente proporcional al aclaramiento hepático de Br (AHB).
• Cualquier cambio en la fracción de BNC, será directamente proporcional a la fracción TIB, e inversamente proporcional al cambio en la fracción AHB.
• La absoluta magnitud en el incremento en mg/dL de BNC, dependerá directamente de la tasa de AHB.

La ictericia es la traducción clínica del acúmulo de pigmento biliar en el organismo, caracterizado por la coloración amarillo – naranja de la piel, mucosas y conjuntivas.
Su aparición es siempre consecutiva a una alteración en el metabolismo de las bilirrubinas. 2
