Without a shadow of a doubt, out of the 180 different species of freshwater fish found in Canada, the most popular is the walleye. In addition to providing an exciting challenge to anglers, the walleye is an exceptionally tasty fish. A good sized walleye is usually about 30 inches long and weighs about 20lbs. However some much larger ones have been caught in Canada, where the cooler waters and abundant food supply help the fish grow while also giving a unique flavor not always associated with the walleye found in the United States. Female walleye, which reach maturity at about 5 years old, lay their eggs in the springtime. After laying the eggs, neither adult cares for the eggs or the fry. The female can lay 500,000 eggs.

Anglers claim that the most entertaining method for landing a walleye is to use an ultra light fishing rod to catch a massive walleye that is full of fight. The time of the year when the most walleye are caught in Canadian waters in during the spring, however anglers have a great deal of success in the summer when they fish in Northern Canada. Although autumn walleye fishing doesn't produce the massive number of fish that the spring does, most of the big, trophy sized, walleye are hooked during this time of year. What this means, is that no matter what season, an angler will be able to fish for walleye. During the spring and summer, anglers want to look at rivers and reefs which have underwater reefs where the walleye like to gather. The best spots have gravel bottoms and light currents. Walleye usually are found in about 12 meters of water.

Once you have located the ideal location, you will need to consider your walleye fishing technique. Since conditions of the water and atmosphere are constantly changing the angler has to be willing to adapt their technique. This often means changing the type of bait they are using, the color of their lure, and their fishing location. Today, jiggling is the most popular way to catch walleye. That first tug, the one that indicates a walleye has taken the bait, is all it takes to get the angler's heart pounding. Then it is angler against fish, locked together in a timeless battle. If the walleye wins, it swims away. If the angler wins, it’s time to make plans for an excellent dinner.
