Fishing around Macquarie Harbour
Location
What will I catch from shore?
Australian salmon - taken mid-water by spinning a silver lure or casting a baited hook and sinker. Often caught around river mouths.
Atlantic salmon - found close to salmon farms. Can be taken on rod and line using natural baits, artificial lures or a fly.
Cod - a reef fish caught near the bottom using large baited hooks and a sinker.
Flounder - use a flounder light and spear on calm nights along shallow beaches or estuaries. Size up your fish before spearing it.
Trout - trout or ‘sea runners’ will take a variety of natural and artificial lures. Seasons and different regulations apply in inland waters.
Whitespotted dogfish - caught when bottom fishing with bait but often released as they are not popular eating. Be careful of sharp spines.
Local fishing facts
• From a boat, you can also catch barracouta, morwong, mullet, bastard trumpeter, pink ling and silver trevally.
• Macquarie Harbour is the only waterway in Tasmania that allows recreational gillnetting at night. To protect endangered Maugean skates, netting is not allowed in the harbour’s internal waters. If you catch a Maugean skate, release it as quickly as possible.
• Macquarie Harbour entrance is a no gillnetting area to protect Little Penguins.
• Thereisgreatsurffishingforsalmon, mulletandgummy shark at Macquarie Heads or Ocean Beach.
