Visionary Co-FoundersCo-Founders Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Dr. Geoffrey Tabin joined togetherin 1995 to eliminate needless blindness worldwide. They began bybringing a pioneering cataract surgical technique to remote areasof the Himalayas, and teaching the technique to local providers.Today, this technique is being used to restore sight for thousands ofpeople each year.
Dear Friends,
This was an exciting year for the Himalayan Cataract Project. With your support, HCP and itspartners examined and treated 700,000 people, providing more than 60,000 sight-restoringcataract surgeries in eight countries. Nurses, technicians and ophthalmologists from morethan a dozen countries received advanced training and clinical education. Thank you forhelping us to make wise investments in a new generation of eye care professionals.
In 2013, a number of milestone events helped to raise awareness of the need to addresspreventable blindness. The publication of dear friend and author David Oliver Relin’s book,
Second Suns, helped to share our story and engage more people in our efforts. Media coverage stimulated by the book aroundthe world introduced HCP to a wider audience and many new supporters.
Co-Founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit accepted the António Champalimaud 2013 Vision Award on behalf of the Tilganga Institute ofOphthalmology. The award gave international recognition for the transformation of Nepal’s eye care system, and specifically toTilganga and its partners for adapting a system of cataract care to remote regions of the Himalayas.
Working together with our partners, we prepared to open a new eye care surgical training center in Ghana, provided essentialequipment for teaching hospitals in Ethiopia, and brought sight-restoring surgeries to people in areas of Asia isolated by poverty.
Every time we witness the joy in the face of a woman able to see her grandchildren for the first time, or the tears of happinesson the cheeks of a young girl who can see a new life ahead, we are rededicated to our mission: making sure that no one isneedlessly blind, no matter where they live or what their circumstances.
None of this would be possible without the support of our friends and partners across the globe. Thank you for joining us inthis important work.
