PROSTHESISProject 3Prof M. ChenThe final project in Technics focused on the space between two body positions and their relationship over time given in a certain action. Inspiration was developed from furniture, automotive and fashion design. An analysis of when a body reached its tipping point was developed over a series of diagrams and photographs. Previous models were photographed in sequence to understand how the stress of the load reacts under tension and compression. An organic form was developed given the analysis of the fluidity of two bodies in motion. Continuity of a system became a driving force of manipulating space between.

Diagrams investigated the tipping point of when one body was in stasis; the moment before the catch to be pre-negotiated as the point to design against and create a chamfer. The primary system was to account for the direct force of compression. The secondary system was created to reduce the amount of shear that would be determined when two bodies cross paths.

PROSTHESISEvolution of prosthesis models

The drawings were inspired by the move-ment of the structure under the forc-es derived from the action of the body.

The evolutionary process of the model was a series of refinements adjusted af-ter analysis of how tension and compres-sion reacts to the structure. The struc-ture was shifted to be able to transfer the load more efficiently onto the shoulder. Thicker basswood strips were weaved together to form a shell of structure.

CANTILEVEREDThe Interdependency of Three Bodies

The second project of a three part series in Technics was based upona a primary sequence of interdependent actions.A concentrated approach of join analysis was crucial to the design approach. New design approaches were created to create an emphasis of material collaboration whether than using glue. The inspiration was driven from the folding of limbs and interlocking connections.

Investigations within a 360 degree shot were investigated to understand the postion from every perceived angel and aid to the developement of the design. A concept to take from the positions were ideas of chamfer, but pre designing the determined stress of the models direction.

Diagrams were analyzed to understand weak spots in the connections of the bodies and to further develope a resoolution to the weak moments.

REPRESENTATION IProfessor Adam Dayem

The beginning weeks of Representation I focused primarily on technical aspects of represenatational styles. Illustrative and creative ideas were introduced by the midterm deliverables.

The midterm drawings were an additional approach to the technical representation-al drawings. A field of cubes were sliced and paired with both two dimensional and three dimensional superimpositions to investigate multiple relationships.

REPRESENTATION I

The final drawing for Representation 1 was a seriesof gravitational transformations that passed through a series of axial grids. The cubes slowly gravitated toward an assemblage. Once the cubes met the position of the affected gravitation they were cut to understand the relationship of time and space. Shadows were cast to understand the positions of the different cubes to the relationship on the grid.

Design 101

The first half of the fall semester was a series of excercises to begin to develope material for a hybridization of two approaches. The excercises consisted of developements of point, line, plane and solids. A hybridization of sticks and planes were combined with a solid approach to begin to understand all four elements of a visual system. Approach A, “To Connect Under Enclosure” was an exploration of micro enclosures based upon the developement of a drawing set. Approach B, was “To Disconnect Under Enclosure” to form a cohesive relationship of broken continuity for final project developement.

The Hybridization Process

Study models were the the results of the approaches hybridization. Exploration of approach dominant studies were created and led to exploding the solid model to create another series of spaces that did not exist with the original approaches. With the expansion of the one solid volumes the vertical elements were stretched apart to follow in accordance to the first approach.

An Architectural Proposition of Broken ContinuityDESIGN 101

An Architectural Proposition of Broken Continuity consisted of a sequence of varied spaces to serve as collaborative moments and moments of reprieve. The components were in moments in conflict or within collaboration to provide spaces to emphasize what actions should be happening within the structure.

Representation II served as a source of creating experimental analaytical drawings. One house was chosen to create all forms of an analytical drawing. Structure, circulation, massing, and various other elements of the house was investigated. Phenomenological analysis was a concentrated form of drawing when working with House X.

The final drawing was an exploration in developing a new approach to representing a structure. Investigating a new approach to a drawing. Inspired by the collage work of David Hockney, House X was represented through a series of still images linked together. Different perspectives were stitched together to develope a morphological analysis of the the structure. The house was designed with an intention to distort the experiment of circulating through the house. Multiple sections were cut to reveal the best spatial quality of each quadrant of the strucuture.

Design 102Professor D. KoschitzDesign 102 began with a series of idea generating excercises to gather an analysis for the second half of the semester, An Architectural Proposition for two occupants.

The exercises were the ideas of creating informative systems, to generate data for the site and program in the second half of the semester.

The body in motion analysis evolved through the use of multiple mediums. Generated from photographic experimentation such as superimpostion of two images; into a multi layered analysis through drawing. Through the source of drawing informative rule sets generated information to creating a full three dimensional model.

Body positions in space were gathered and then analyzed to create direct relationships of the two bodies in motion to create a superimposition of space in time. Locking relationships were celebrated and became a chain of information that linked the instance together; a transmittable network.

BODY IN MOTION

Page 28: First Year Architecture Portfolio

The proposition began as a result of a hybridization of two exercises. One dealing with programatic elements, as the other approach was concentrated to site conditions. Formal systems expanded from the approaches to develope a spatial envelope that was expanded or contracted to house the bodies in motion accoriding to their designated action.

The solid void design approach was resourced as an envelopement of space, a containment of the void, extending also below ground level.

The body in motion excercise generated the actions of the occupants and also created a portable analysis to transcend through varied human action. It existed as creating programatic spaces for the occupants, and the occupants superimposed activities as well.

CITY EXTENSION CITYDesign 102 final project

The architectural proposition for two occupants was developed as a proposition of an exercise of public space. Active occupants were gathered from the studies of the body in motion activity. The ground level is proposed as pulling the public into the private dwelling, negating its primary neighbors but embracing a culture rooted into the Brooklyn underground.

Inspired by the circulation differences of skateboarding on a surface and hiking on a surface the structure understands both paths of the occupants. Programmatic spaces were developed by the occurence of activities of both occupants.

The design approaches were illustrated in a particular sequence to orchestrate there specific functions and relationship to site and program. The solid and void approach was used to create a spatial envelope and establish a relationship to the site, above and also below ground. The body in motion approach was designated to expand or compress spaces to accomodate activities.
