“A Call to Action Conference”

I enjoy having the congregations I serve hear from as many sources as possible about the various aspects we can use to define and measure the health of congregational life and achieve spiritual health. Thursday, September 8th at 6:30 PM will be a special time for Methodist folks in our district. There will be a worship service including communion at 1st UMC of Union City followed by sharing by Dr. John Bonson from our United Methodist Communications office in Jackson. Dr. Bonson will be speaking about research findings entitled, “A Call to Action.” His sharing will offer what the latest research reveals regarding the characteristics of growing congregations. This would be a great event especially for our leaders to attend, but also for everyone from our congregation that desires to see our church move forward.

Meet our interim Bishop

September 18, 6:00 PM, 1st UMC of Jackson will be an opportunity to hear our interim bishop, Bishop James Chamness address our congregations. I assume Bishop Chamness will outline what his efforts will focus on over the next year. Perhaps we can get a group to go to Jackson and eat together before the event or go out for refreshments after the event. I’ll be attending this event so let me know if you would like to ride along.

Congregational Nominations:

It is time to begin thinking about asking people to serve as leaders and members of various church teams and committees. Please pray and consider carefully if you are asked to serve. Also, if you are currently serving either as a leader or team member and you wish to step away from serving in your position, then please send me an email or letter so we can know in advance before the nominations committee begins meeting in September.

Acts/Wednesday Study Groups

September 11th at 5:00 PM will be a gathering for all ages of youth who plan on attending Wednesday evening groups. We would ask that adults who will lead kid/youth groups to also attend so you can introduce yourself to the kids that motivation be in your group. Our ACTS and adult groups will begin on September 14th. This year we are changing some things up so below are some key details.

Groups start at 7:00 PM. Some have asked if this is too late for little ones. Good question. We want to try this later starting time. After all, we know many churches start their evening activities at 7:00 and families attend ballgames and other events that begin at 7:00 or later so perhaps 7:00 gives people a little more time to get here and not be so rushed.

Meals: We will not have a meal every week before groups. We are going to have a potluck kickoff meal on the 14th. at 6:30. Once a month will have a potluck dinner together at 6:30 then go to our groups.

We’ll try the schedule above through the first two months of the fall and then evaluate whether this is working or not. If you have questions or feedback, contact Jerry Leach or me, Pastor Gus.

Thanks, Pastor Gus

Thanks,

Pastor Gus
