First Sunday of Lent March 1, 2020

Even now, says the Lord,

Return to me with your whole heart, With fasting, and weeping, and mourning;

Rend your hearts not your garments, And return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, And relenting in punishment.

Joel 2:12-13

Fast and Abstinence and Other Acts of Penance during Lent The Bishops of the U.S. prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednes-day, February 26, on all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to partici-pate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to under-take spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

Confession and Penance The Sacrament of Penance requires a real response from us, a desire to change. This is aided by hearing the Word of God. Through this Word, Christians receive light to recognize their sins and are called to conversion and to confidence in God’s loving mercy. When we go to confession, we should: (1) Ask ourselves how we have offended God. (2) Be truly sorry for our sins. (3) Make up our minds not to sin again. (4) Tell our sins to the priest. (5) Do the penance the priest gives us. “In our preparation for Easter, God in His providence offers us each year the season of Lent as a sacramental sign of our con-version. Lent summons us, and enables us, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life.” Pope Francis

First Sunday of Lent March 1, 2020

FOCUS: The season of Lent calls us to humility, to an honest understanding of who we are.

Humility is not false modesty, but the awareness of who we are: Sons and daughters of God, created by God. Yet we, like Adam and Eve, are often tempted to think of ourselves as more than creatures, as in control of the world. May God give us the grace to allow him to be God. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the woman and her husband eat fruit from the tree of life, and realize they are naked. In the Letter to the Romans, Paul reassures us that God’s grace surpasses any of our sins. In the gospel, the devil tempts Jesus while he is in the desert, but Jesus says to him, “Get away Satan!”. REFLECTION: Jesus not only shared our human na-ture but, like us, was subject to temptations. In the course of our daily lives we also face temptations to put comfort and material possessions over the sacrifices in-volved in being a disciple. We get sidetracked and lose sight of what and who are important in our lives. So we ask ourselves:

♦ What are my priorities; who and what are important in my life?

♦ How do you express those priorities by the choices you make each day?
