Solemn Advent Vespers The season of Advent, the beginning of the Church’s Liturgical Year, is a time of preparation, hope, reflection and anticipation that provides the Church an opportunity to enter into quiet, meditative and penitential reflection upon the celebration and the mystery that is the Incarnation – The Solemnity of Christmas.

This season we offer another opportunity to enter more deeply into this beautiful season of preparation with the celebration of Solemn Vespers or Evening Prayer. Evening Prayer or Vespers comes from the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayer celebrated by Priests, Deacons, Religious brothers and sisters and even lay faithful throughout the world. The public celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours is an important part of the Rites of the Church and as the major documents of Vatican II states, “Pastors of souls should see that the major hours of the Church, in particular Vespers are celebrated in common in church on Sundays and on more solemn seasons/occasions.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, n.100) We will have the privilege of introducing this beautiful service during the Advent season here at St. Barnabas as another opportunity to open our hearts to prayer and to recollect our minds as we prepare for the coming of the Lord. Each Sunday during Advent, the service of Vespers will begin at 4:00pm in the Main Church and last approximately 35 minutes. After the service is completed, the usual 5:00pm Mass will take place. The dates for Vespers are as follows:

1st Sunday of Advent (November 27) - Solemn Vespers @ 4:00pm 2nd Sunday of Advent (December 4) – Solemn Vespers @ 4:00pm 3rd Sunday of Advent (December 11) – Lessons & Carols will replace Solemn Vespers 4th Sunday of Advent (December 18) – Solemn Vespers @ 4:00pm
