PASTOR’S COMMENTS Borrowed from Paul Turner

It Must Be God’s Fault

It must be God’s fault. That’s the conclusion Isaiah reaches. And who of us hasn’t thought the same? If things don’t go our way, if someone hurts us, if someone leaves us—even if the mess is our own fault—we blame God.

People sin, but Isaiah asks God, “Why do you let us wander, O LORD, from your ways?” People show no remorse, but Isaiah asks God, “Why do you harden our hearts so that we fear you not?” Must be God’s fault.

Isaiah’s prayer opens the season of Advent because of a specific request it makes. “Rend the heavens and come down.” In the midst of our misfortune, sorrow, and sin, when we realize our own strength fails to make life any better, to eliminate hurt, or to erase the past, we finally turn to God for a solution. Let there be no veil concealing heaven from earth. Let God rip it open, come down here, and save us from the messiness of life.

God did just that on the first Christmas Day. As we stand on the threshold of another

Advent, we ask God to do it again. Even if our mess isn’t God’s fault, we need God’s help to set us free.

"Love proves itself by deeds, and how shall I prove

mine? ... I can prove my love only by scattering flowers,

that is to say, by never letting slip a single little sacrifice,

a single glance, a single word; by making profit of the

very smallest actions, by doing them all for love. I want

to suffer and even rejoice for love, for this is my way of

scattering flowers."

CHERRY HILL MINISTERS

This ministry serves the spiritual needs of the Cherry Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located at 2 Cherry Hill Road in Johnston. Every Sunday, a Communion Service is provided by a deacon and a group of dedicated lay ministers. After the service, Holy Communion is brought to residents unable to attend the service in the manor's gathering room. Anyone interested in assisting in this ministry please contact the Parish Office 232-5600 or [email protected]/331-7075

Outreach Ministry What a wonderful response we have gotten from our St. Robert's parish Since this is an ongoing ministry, please continue to be

generous. The poor and homeless need winter coats, hats, white socks, blankets and other winter clothing. Please bring clean items to church and leave them in the vestry.

Prayer shawl Ministry If you or a friend are in need of a comforting touch, Please call Carolyn at 231-5864 and she will leave the item requested with your name on it in the vestry.

Lap blanket Ministry We recently started our lap blanket ministry for the residents at Cherry Hill Nursing Home. If you'd like to knit, crochet or work with fleece, please consider making a lap blanket. The sizes needed are 36 x 36, 35 x 40. Fleece blankets should be double sided for warmth. These too, can be left at the vestry. Please add your name and address so that we can thank you.

Support the Retirement Fund for Religious. A donor writes, “Your flyer touched my heart—seeing the

retired religious, such memories surfaced.” Do you remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order

priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement

needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Please give to next week’s second collection.

The La Salette Retreat Center in Attleboro is the location for a support group for separated and

divorced persons. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 12/11 from 7:00pm-8:30pm . For more

information or for directions, please contact Dottie at 508-642-1928 or [email protected].
