Prayer of Confession*

Let us confess our sins before God and one another.

Eternal God, we confess that we do not always honor Your holy name. We sometimes use Your name irreverently. We sometimes call out Your name in shock or fright, rather than in wonder and awe. We sometimes shout out Your name in frustration or anger, rather than in praise. Yet You command us to revere Your name and to honor it, in all we say and in all we do. Forgive us, we pray. Awaken our hearts and minds to the majesty of Your name so that we will use it in a way that pleases you. Amen.

Hear the good news: God is gracious and long-suffering. God pardons those who desire to obey the Lord’s command. In the Name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God! Amen.

Children’s Moments with the Minister

Sermon Thunder on the Mountain: Taking God Lightly

Ministry of Music Lead me, Lord Samuel. S. Wesley (1810-1876)

Psalm 5:8

Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness; make thy way plain before my face. For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord only, that makest me dwell in safety.

Peachtree Road Staff Singers

Anthem O for a closer walk with God C.V. Stanford (1852-1924)

William Cowper, 1731-1800

O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heav’nly frame; a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! Return, O holy Dove, return! Return! Return! Sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast. So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.

Peachtree Road Staff Singers

Prayer*

Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

A Concert of Hope for Our TimeDan Forrest's Requiem for the Living Concert VideoToday, May 3, 5:00 pm, prumc.orgMusic has always provided inspiration, joy, solace and comfort to us throughout our lives. More than ever, Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living will ease the fear and uncertainty we are experiencing right now.

This work was originally performed in March 2017 by the PRUMC Chancel Choir and orchestra as a community service of prayer and hope. The Requiem, at its core, is a prayer for rest — traditionally, for the deceased. The five movements, however, form a narrative just as much for the living and their hope in this time of struggle. These movements take the listener on a journey from pleas for rest and mercy, to the turmoil and sorrow facing humanity, finally closing with portrayals of light, peace and rest.

SPRING SERMON SERIESThe Ten Commandments: Thunder on the MountainSundays, 11:15 am, prumc.orgAfter the exodus out of Egypt and the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, the Israelites journeyed through Sinai where they met God in the smoke and thunder of the mountain. This marked a day of new beginnings. As we make preparations for a new day after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, this new sermon series entitled “Thunder on the Mountain” will help us explore the Ten Commandments and their relevance for us today. Join your friends at Peachtree Road as we get back to the basics of our faith, reflect upon the boundaries God sets for us, and discover new ways to live out our faith.
