From our Senior Minister

Hold That Thought… MISCELLANEOUS UPDATES

Peace, John P. S. Our church recently paid our second quarter benevolences, which are financial contributions to local outreach ministries. Please continue to support our mission during the summer. Thanks for your generosity!

Recently I completed a 21-Day Racial Equality Challenge sponsored by our presbytery. The goal was for participants to grow in awareness, knowledge, and understanding of racism. What I learned is that I have a lot to learn on this vital subject. And so I now offer you this special invitation. My hope is that you will join me and Carol Pagelsen (retired pastor in our church) as we journey further down this road. Together we will facilitate a class that is most timely for our world today. Our group conversations will at times make us uncomfortable, but they will surely stretch us toward greater faithfulness. Our text will be a workbook entitled How To Be An Antiracist, by Ibram X. Kendi. Please call the church office or go online to register. Class will be by Zoom on Monday afternoons from 4:00-5:00, beginning August 3.

The Task Force continues to work diligently to reopen our campus in safe and effective ways. Our current phase includes policies for small groups to meet outside, as well as a few restricted “life-events” in the sanctuary (Memorial Services, Baptisms, and Weddings). Please note that with record numbers of COVID 19 cases along the Grand Strand, the Task Force encourages groups that are meeting to continue to use Zoom technology (or other similar options). If you need to reserve such a meeting, please contact Rev. Christa Brewer at [email protected]. If you need to schedule outdoor activities, please contact either Diane P’Pool ([email protected]) or Mary Gene Singleton ([email protected]) for appropriate guidelines to follow.

As a point of clarification, the Task Force has amended our policies to reflect the new mask ordinance of Myrtle Beach. Masks are highly recommended for outdoor activities and are required inside the buildings. If you participate in church-related events off campus, please consider precautions that are appropriate. The goal is for everyone to use best practices until we are safely on the other side of this pandemic.

Recommendations—After a presentation from the Task Force (including survey results and local medical conditions) the following motion that was unanimously approved by the Session: 1) Continuing with online only worship through at least July. 2) Approval of Recommended Guidelines. 3) Plans for Phase 2 to include outdoor public worship (not before August). 4) Continuing to encourage all areas of FPC ministry to develop creative ways to meet, worship, and grow online.

While we had hoped for more public gatherings at this point, current conditions dictate a slower move in that direction. Thanks for your patience and your prayers.

Virtual Communion Services

On the occasion when we celebrate Communion (the next communion is August 9), please have a small piece of bread and a small cup prepared at table in your home!

NEW CLASS: HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST

My name is Carol Pagelsen (The Rev.) and I have a confession I need to make: I am a good white racist. It's not something I have intentionally chosen to be, nor something I want to continue to be. But until I acknowledge the reality that I am, I cannot begin to change and grow. This may be uncomfortable for me, and at times, down right painful. That's why I'm asking you, my sisters and brothers and my pastor, to join me in this journey to discover how to change. With your support, honesty, compassion, and love, I believe I can change. This is the church "where love makes the difference."

Pastor John and I will be using the following workbook:

Workbook for How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi Mondays, 4:00 - 5:00 PM, via ZOOM (Invite will be sent to those registered)

Online Services Schedule and Helpful Hints

Early Sabbath and the Gathering will be combined and pre-recorded and may be seen on the website. The recording will be available at 9:00 on Sunday mornings and archived for viewing thereafter.

Our traditional 11:00 Sunday service will be live-streamed and a bulletin is available on the website. We are all eager to return to our normal routines, but for now stay safe, take precautions, and “Keep the Faith.” Services are archived for later viewing.

Church staff are working remotely from home at this time. Staff can be reached either by phone (voicemail through the office main number) or email. Please be patient as we learn to live together, apart. This is uncharted territory for all of us.

Each morning, Monday through Friday, we will post a 10 minute devotion by one of our ministers and music staff. We will give any church updates, have a short devotion, a song

and a prayer.

We hope this program brings you comfort and offers a connection even though we are unable to gather together. Each video will be posted on our Facebook page and website,

and it will also be sent out via email.
