Landmark Projects: Pakistan – Power Transmission

Gakkhar SubstationSiemens successfully completed Gakkhar 500/220/132kV substation, one of the megaprojects for the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC).

The work conducted on the overall facility included construction of the relay building, the control building, the mechanical building and the foundations for all the electrical equipment.

An alternative distribution path for the Tarbela and Mangla Hydel power stations, the new 500 kV substation for the NTDC network increases the flexibility of transmitting and distributing electrical power generated at the country's major power plants. Faults on extra-high-voltage transmission lines are reduced, thus resulting in fewer blackouts.

Karachi Electric Supply Company Load Dispatch Center

Pakistan’s first Load Dispatch Center (LDC) project for a power distribution company was undertaken by Siemens and commissioned in 2009. KESC is providing electricity to over 16 million people of Karachi and suburbs. The project includes centralized SCADA system, telecommunication, protection and substation automation. The project has immense sustainable value as it opens greater possibilities for effective energy management in Pakistan.

The installed LDC has the ability to monitor the electrical power flow right from the generating plants and transmission system, down to 11kV distribution at the sub stations. The system is open to integrate all the new Siemens Smart Grid Applications for efficient and reliable utility operations.

Benazir Bhutto AirportThe first ever green field airport in Pakistan, the Benazir Bhutto Airport has Siemens green portfolio in the form of low energy LED-based airfield light fixture in place of convention halogen lamps.

This green technology aims to optimize energy using low energy LED based AFL fixture and introducing UPS for catering critical loads for CAT-II operations.

The UPS reduces operating time of generating sets and consequently optimizes fuel consumption.
