to Christians. Certainly, Christian persecution is on the increase. But is it the greatest threat to your faith? It

INDONESIA: A total of 18 of the 24 Protestant and Catholic churches in Ampenan and the island’s

capital of Mataram nearby were destroyed in three days of sectarian violence. This started after Muslims

protested over Christian-Muslim clashes on the Indonesian island of Ambon to the north and has left five

people dead.

Just another round in the persecution of Christians around the world, notably in Muslim countries and

China. It is a very real danger to individual Christians, but do you think it is a great danger to their faith?

Historically, the answer is no. Persecution has actually made the Christian faith stronger and more vibrant.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine,

or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are

accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him

that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers,

nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to

separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35 to 39). So what can?

Matthew 5:10 “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of

heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil

against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so

persecuted they the prophets which were before you” (Matthew 5:10,11).

Persecution has the curious effect of causing us to shift our hope from this world to the Kingdom of
