First Newsletter of the Tonga Institute of Higher Education (TIHE) ‐ 2019 SEMESTER ONE First assembly for this year was led by FWC Halafo’ou Reverend Sione Fangalahi based on “Jesus is the way and the truth” you will find the information about this from its textbook which is called “bible” at the Tonga Constitution Hall, Pahu. All TIHE students gathered together to mark the beginning of this academic year and the total enrollment for each school in semester 1 is as follows:
School of Information and Technology : 170 students
School of Accounting 128 students
School of Tourism 118 students
School of Media and Journalism 57 students
School of Agriculture 49 students
TRAININGS
There were 3 staff development workshops and trainings that were conducted since the beginning of
the year.
1 APTUS Training workshop – January 24th 2019
2 Setting Examination papers Workshop – 25th January 2019
Where the teaching staff both permanent and part time staff attended.
3. First Aid Training – 2nd – 4th April 2019
Both staff and students from the National Certificate of Tour Guiding L3 certificate participated
in this training. Since this training is very important to the future career of these students they
were given the opportunity to join in the training.
Sione Talifolau Lihau and Silongo Huni from the Tonga Red Cross conducted the first aid training.
Student Councilors and Welcoming of New Students
The new Student Councilors were inducted during the second assembly on the 29th March. The
Australian Scholarship Officer presented on the Australian Scholarship and distributed the website and
flyers of the scholarship.
Councilors in each of the 5 schools of the Institute are as listed below.

The new students of the School of Information Technology were
welcomed by the old students or the Diploma Students.
Year two students of the School of Information
Technology arranged this ceremony.
OPENING OF THE MEDIA COMPUTER LAB
Australian Government funded the purchase of 10 new computers for the School of Media and
Journalism through PACMAS. Mr Fatuimoana Langilangi, principal of the School of Agriculture led the
Hand over program with a prayer. Mr Leon Braun, Second Secretary and Vice Consul for the Australian
High Commission handed over the new computers to the Deputy CEO of TIHE, Lady Siatukimoana Vaea.
MID‐SEMESTER GATHERING
The end of the first half of this semester, year one councilors arranged a gathering for students to mark
the first half. The course coordinators, lecturers, counselors and students whom are employed by
different employers, delivered encouragement speeches.
END OF SEMESTER ASSEMBLY
The final Assembly of Semester 1 took place on Friday 24th May 2019. It was lead by prayer from Venasio
Tangulu and the Principal delivered words of encouragements to the students. This was followed by a
presentation from the Japan Embassy of the government of Japan’s scholarship.
