Millions o arm animals are transported across the world ever

like Compassion believe that the trade in live animals is inhmane
and shold be replaced b a trade in meat.Peter Stevenson, Chie Polic Advisor at Compassion in World

o live transport. Investigations b animal welare grops haveond cramped, overcrowded conditions, no access to water so
animals ser rom dehdration and even occasions when the are
so hngr the are orced to eat their own lth bedding. Somecollapse onto the foor o the trck where the are trampled b their

Last ear almost 80,000 sheep and ong calves, onl a
ew weeks old, were transported rom Britain to the Eropeanmainland, three times more than in 2010.
It is also hard or armers to be sre their animals will be hmanel
treated when the arrive ater sometimes grelling jornes. For
example, investigations have revealed that Astralian sheep andcattle that are exported can be badl treated in abattoirs in the Middle
East or Sotheast Asia. Animal welare campaigners hope that 2012will be the ear when long distance live animal transport is ended.

ThE Borrowers is e te mst lved stries all time, abut te tiy peple w brrw tigs rmumas. Cristper Ecclest plays Pd Clck i a brad-ew versi te flm, s we caugt up witim r a quick cat abut playig a Brrwer.
I few out o a drain!
Are yu a a te Borrowers bk?
The Borrowers is one o the very rst books I remember reading
as a child, and I loved it. As a child, i I liked a book, I tended tokeep reading it. The lm is a contemporary take on the story
and still retains all the original elements o the book, which isreally about a loving amily a dad learning how to let go o his
daughter so that shell come back.
Wat was it like playig Pd?
As the book was such an important part o my childhood, Iwas very amiliar with the character o Pod. Ian Holm, who Ive
worked with, is one o my heroes, as is Jim Broadbent bothantastic actors, so it was nice to think that Id play a role that
those two great actors have played. Pod borrows his clothes
rom an action gure o the 80s, perhaps loosely based on acharacter rom Raiders O The Lost Ark. I think that appeals to
Pods image hes quite an adrenaline junkie, he likes risk andadventure. Pod is also a lovely dad, and a hero. Ive played lots o
troubled men and anti-heroes, but Pods a straight hero. Theres
a great sense o humour to him, and a gentleness. Thats what
attracted me to the role.
Did yu get t wear ay cl cstumes?
Pods costume is very torn, tattered, spattered in mud, and hal
hanging o him. Hes a typical ella, hes not too concernedwith what he looks like. When they go on this extraordinary
adventure, Pod is reduced to rags really. Hes nearly dissectedand his shirt is taken o him by the human beings he starts
o pretty Harrison Ford-ish, and ends up like Steptoe and Son.
Wat was it like perrmig te stuts i te flm?
Playing the role o Pod is unlike anything Ive done beore. There was a huge amount o green screen. Ive done little bits o
green screen in the past, but not that much. I would say its themost challenging role Ive done physically, because one o the
conditions or me playing the part was that I did all the stunts.
My avourite stunt was where I ran
along a gigantic bookcase and justthrew mysel into mid-air and onto a
crash mat. I was very excited aboutdoing that and they had to tell me to
stop because I kept doing it or un.I also ew out o a gigantic drain into
12t (3m) o milkshake mix, but that was
not as pleasant.

GAME ZONE
The rst thing to say is that the PS Vitalooks and eels pretty much like a PSP, but
with a sleeker design and rounder edges.
The obvious new change is the addition othe two analogue sticks. This is mainly to
make it easier to play rst-person games, which are quite dicult on the PSP or DS.
Games will be released on 2GB or 4GB
memory cards, so theres no slot to useyour UMD PSP games.
The Vita has a touch screen, but also a

theres a point early on where you seeblocks o dierent sizes and shapes in the

you do by
putting yournger on the rear pad. This pushes the

but pretty cool and unlike anything weve

How dos it l now you hav
announcd you splitting up?Well, its ne, you know. I think we all eel
like were doing the right thing and its
the right time. Weve spent a long timededicating our lives to Westlie and to each
other. I think weve all kind o come to thestage where were all wanting to spend
more time with amily and things like that
and it ust kind o eels right. We eel likeweve been to so many places and done
things wed never thought wed get to do.We never wanted it to end badly, we always
wanted to end it as riends. Weve managedto do that ater 14 years, so we really eel like
weve made the right decision.
Dos it still l lik youv got quit along to way go, with th tou nxt ya?
Yes, it is a bit like that. I dont think it eels
real to us at the minute. None o it eels real,
because were still in the middle o it. Were
in the middle o the promotional tour andwere doing interviews all the time, were
talking about it all. It s so strange, but Idont think weve really realised what weve
achieved and I dont think weve realisedwhat weve been doing or the last 14
years. Were ending with a big concert so,
when it all comes to an end, itll be quite anemotional moment or us all. Then its going
to be interesting. Itll be an awkward ewmonths, seeing what its like to live without
Westlie. Thatll be when it becomes real.
Youv just lasd you gatst hits

We ust said put everything that weveever released on this album. There are twodiferent versions o it theres one thats
got the denitive hits, all the number ones
and the big singles. We wanted to make sure
all the big moments are on there. Then theywere like: Were going to leave of songs
that were number two. But, i it was numbertwo, why wouldnt we put it on? So it was a
little bit unny in that way, but theres alsoanother version that has literally all the
songs ever released. That is amazing, and
its got every video weve ever made onthere as well, so thats the lump package
and thats the one to go or, its brilliant.
How long would it tak to listn to that
whol album thn?Id say probably our hours. Three to our
hours. Maybe more!
Do you hav you own psonalavouit song o vido om th pa st?I think songs like Flying Without Wings and
You Raise Me Up and World Of Our Own.Those three songs are massive moments
in our career and they still eel like werecorded them yesterday. So, rom that
perspective, theyre amazing songs,
but then I remember I loved shootingFool Again of the rst album in Mexico.
There were so many diferent thingswe did over the years and its ust crazy
looking back on it and tr ying to pull out
moments that were betterthan others.

youv had such a succssul ca oso long?
I genuinely believe its because we ustdidnt argue with each other to the

Struggling
to go toschool
How many children across theworld are in school?
Around the world, more than 69 million children o
primary school age are not in school. Thats more than theentire UK population.
One reason that so many children miss out on aneducation is because its too expensive or their amilies to
send them to school.
Although school is ree in the UK, it isnt in many poorcountries, so amilies have to cover the costs o school ees
as well as uniorms and textbooks. For many o the worldspoorest amilies, who struggle to survive on less than 1 per
day, these costs are too high.
Even in places where school is ree, the quality o teachingis oten so bad that many parents eel they would be better
o sending their children to work instead.
What can the UK do to help?
The UK Government believes that helping children
around the world to get a decent education is the best wayto fght poverty.
Thats why, over the next our years, British aid will beused to help 11 mill ion o the worlds poorest children go
to school, and train more than 190,000 teachers, to improve
the quality o education.
Samias story
Samia is an 11-year-old who lives with her
mother, our brothers and three sisters in the
slums o Rawalpindi Pakistans ourth-largestcity.
Her amily is very poor their small home inthe slums has just one room.
One third o Pakistans population live in
extreme poverty. This means more than 62million people live on less than 30 pence a day,
and regularly go hungry. 17 millionchildren in Pakistan do not go to school.
Why is it difficult forSamia to go to school?
Like many poor amilies, Samiasmother, Yasmeen, has struggled to give
her children an education. She earns just 48 per
month working as a cleaner. When Samias ather died a ew years ago, her
older brothers dropped out o school so theycould go to work and help Yasmeen earn money
or the amily.
Samia would have missed getting an educationtoo, i it wasnt or the special vouchers her amily
started to receive rom an organisation calledthe Punjab Education Foundation, which is
supported by UK aid.
Yasmeen uses the vouchers to pay th3 it costs each month or Samia to go
school in Rawalpindi.
I get a good education at my schoolSamia. My avourite subject is English
want to be a doctor when I grow up.Yasmeen is very happy that Samia ca
to school. She didnt get an education like hal o all adults in Pakistan, she ca
read or write.
My younger kids will get a goodeducation, get a better job and have a
uture, says Yasmeen.
What is the future for
pupils like Samia?UK aid is transorming the lives o mo
than 300,000 children like Samia, by he
them to get an education. This will increase to our michildren across Pakistan over the next ew years.
Getting more children into school means more peopgrow up with the skills needed to help Pakistan work i
out o poverty. And that means Pakistan will gradually become less
dependent on aid rom countries like Britain.
Getting more kids into school is just one way UK aidhelping to change the lives o some o the worlds poo
people. To fnd out more, visit www.dfd.ov.uk.

My best friend Ella nominated me. Weve been BFFsfor years and have been through a lot together. After herkidney transplant at eight, she needs to take regularmedicine and I make sure she takes every dose.
Ella had to submit a picture of us both and a briefdescription of why I deserved to be Britains Best Friend.Amazingly, we were chosen by My Blue Nose Friendsand celebrity best buds Twist & Pulse as one of the tenfinalists, from over 1,000 entries! Ella and my mum had
kept it a secret from me in the beginning, so I was totally shocked when I found out!The ten finalists were put to the public vote next. As the weeks went by, it looked
like Ella and I were going to win but, as it was the public voting, we didnt want toget our hopes up! We couldnt believe it when we were told we had won!
Setting off to school that morning was really exciting and nerve-wracking. Weknew that there was a school assembly dedicated to us and that we would have tostand up and accept our prizes, including lots of My Blue Nose Friends goodies.
Im honoured to be Britains Best Friend. I just did what any friend would do, butI think its really important to be loyal and care for your friends.
Everyone needs friends and it doesnt really take much to be a best friend.
As if that wasnt enough, afterwards I had tickets towatch Federer vs Nadal (Federerwiped the floor with him, unfortunately) and a doublesmatch at the glitzy O2 Arena. It was a great experience, almostlike a West End show. I reallyenjoyed it. They were all solovely and welcoming as well as showing great sportsmanship.
The Ball Kids were very professional, patient and eachmovement they made was precise and perfect. You could sensetheir effort and determined focus through their silent presenceon the court, a result of the long training programme that they gothrough.
Thirty boys and girls aged 12-16 were selected out of 2,500hopefuls.
The chosen Ball Kids, after a final selection at a boot camp inLondon, had a weeks intensive training to participate in theworlds largest indoor tennis tournament, the Barclays ATPWorld Tour Finals.
The Barclays Ball Kids are working with the eight best tennisplayers in the world. This marks a wonderful achievement forthem and an experience that they wont ever forget.
ON Tuesday 22 November I waslucky enough to win a competitioninFirst News to meet the Barclays
Ball Kids at the Barclays ATP
World Tour Finals tennistournament and join in with a training session.

FndrairMY favourite charity is the WDCS, acharity to help save whales and dolphins.Through the WDCS I have adopteddolphins Lightning and Stardance, to help towards saving
these beautiful creatures. I would like to be a marine biologist
when I am older so I can study all marine life to help preserveour oceans.
by Frazr Dal
I have loved dolphins ever since Iwas very young. I think that theirsmiley faces, mischievous behaviour, trustfulness and super intelligence arewonderful. When I was eight, insteadof presents, I asked all of my friendsfor a donation and gave all of mybirthday money to the WDCS, which raised about 80.
I have seen captive dolphins and didnt like it. The pool that they werekept in was small and boring. They were almost never given any freedomand, when they were, it was to entertain humans.
I wanted to raise some funds for the WDCS again, so I chose to set upa stall, because I had lots of used and unused toys and games that I had
saved for this event. My dad and I headed to the local church to set up our stall. There were
lots of other stalls. As the day passed by, our stall became the mostvisited. I handed out all the leaflets on adopting dolphins that theWDCS had sent me and displayed some posters. By the end of the daywe had raised 60.
Seeing dolphins in the wild is a much more pleasant experience.Dolphins leap and twirl on their own because they want to in theirnatural habitat, not because they are made to. We need to help whales anddolphins because it would be a tragedy to lose them from our seas andrivers forever.

I HAVE just found out that I have won 30,000 for my
design idea, The Snug Hug, and have been presented with the cheque at event at my school.
All of this first came about in June whenmy teacher told me about a competition bySound Asleep, who were searching for younginventors to come up with an idea for a sleep-related product.
I immediately knew I wanted to create atravel product aimed at children, and wasinspired by animal toys and photos Id seenof monkeys holding their young in the wild.
My idea The Snug Hug is a child car seat accessory that gives the impression thesitting on the lap of a giant soft toy, to encourage theto travel.
When I heard that Id won and that there was going be a presentation at my school, I was amazed! It wouldfantastic to see The Snug Hug go into production andby Sound Asleep.
I cant thank them enough for the way this competiinspired me and other young inventors across the couIts definitely going to take a lot of beating, thats for
