Rabbi’s MessageShabbat is for Everyone

Dear Friends,

Judaism has always been a religion and way of life for every Jew. It does not belong to experts, certainly not to rabbis. The best rabbis can hope to do – I fervently believe – is to help Jews learn how to learn, so they can live a fulfilling Jewishl life.

One of the greatest tools in the Jewish tool kit for making life meaningful is Shabbat. It has been borrowed by other religions. Today it has been adopted by self-styled ‘secularists’ who see its value, just not its divine origin. Yet those of us who are the heirs of the people who brought Shabbat into the world – sometimes don’t ‘get it’, and so don’t get to enjoy it.

I propose to take some time once a time on Shabbat morning to look at a particular prayer, or

issue related to prayer, to help our Shabbat service become more ‘friendly’ to everyone. Hence the name – “Shabbat for Everyone.” It will be short. It will always be in English, so everyone can understand it.

The first Shabbat for Everyone will be on Dec. 6. It will be part of the service – following the return of the Torah to the Ark. For this first Shabbat for Everyone I want to take a closer look at how we begin the service: Mah Tovu. There is a great deal we can learn from this prayer – both about Shabbat, prayer, and ourselves. I hope you’ll join us on Sat., Dec. 6.

Judy, our children and I wish you and yours Hag HaUrim sameah, a very happy Hanukkah.

Lee S. Paskind

President’s Message

Get Well

First Hebrew wishes a speedy recovery to:

Fran Bensky Morton Bensky Selda BloomeLuz Corona Murray Halperin Esther Katz Glady Kessler

When I receive Masoud’s e-mail advising of the due date for submissions to the Bulletin, I somewhat anxiously start to think of possible topics for the President’s monthly message. Obviously there are numerous issues to write about; everything from the Presidency, the stock market, the economy, Iraq, Iran, Israel, etc. However, my primary concern has been and continues to be the State of First Hebrew Congregation. And so, after approximately sixteen months as your President, I wish to share with you some of my feelings and observations of our Jewish community.

The First Hebrew Congregation -- We are, without doubt, a great group of people. Our membership is caring, warm and loving. We are good Jews who believe in our faith, support the congregation and are ambassadors of Judaism to the secular world. I am proud of each and every member of our Synagogue, no matter what your level of involvement. Moreover, we should be proud of ourselves as Jews and members of this congregation that has a long and distinguished history.

Active Members --If you are an “active” member, certainly your efforts are appreciated and needed in order to make First Hebrew function. Without the active volunteerism of our members, events would not take place, meetings would never happen, and the various arms of the congregation would come to a screeching halt.

Less than Active Members -- If you are a “less than active” member, but still a member, I appreciate your willingness and commitment to being affiliated with First Hebrew. Certainly, deep down, you know that First Hebrew needs all members and their respective contributions; from the individuals who attend the daily Minyan to those who may only come from time to time.

Obviously, it remains my hope that all our members would get more involved, and all would actively contribute their thoughts and opinions to the leadership of First Hebrew so that we are moving together in the right direction.

Bell Curve of Satisfaction -- However, I am aware that there will always be the “bell curve of satisfaction.” There will be those to the left of the curve that are discontent, the vast majority that are content and then there are those to the right of the bell curve that are extremely satisfied. I have tried, not always successfully, to reach out to everyone on that curve. I know that I cannot make the discontent extraordinarily happy. I can, however, try to get those in that category closer to the center of the bell curve.

Where we have been -- I do not need to re-state that we have been through a period of change when there may have been more people to the left of the bell curve than I would have liked. This transition period, as far as I

am concerned, is now over. We are now moving forward. While it is always important to know where you have been in life, and to learn from our mistakes and history, I strongly suggest we all look forward to face an exciting and challenging new future. In my humble opinion, there simply is not enough “human time” to harden our hearts when we can be using such valuable “human time” on bettering our world and giving joy to those around us. The time is now and I am ready to make the most of my time on this earth (and my last six months as your President).

Where we are going -- With each and every month that I have served as your President I have felt a sense of accomplishment that together we are moving in a positive direction. I am also extremely pleased with our new spiritual leader, Rabbi Lee Paskind. In just the few months he has been with us he has positively touched so many of our lives through good times and bad. From the High Holidays, the Sukkah Hop, to helping families grieve at their time of loss, I truly believe we have found our spiritual leader who will guide us to a bright and wonderful future. I believe I can now rest easy knowing that Rabbi Paskind has ingratiated himself with our community.

As I stated over a year ago, I am honored to be your President and to be working with such an incredible group of dedicated trustees, chairpersons and professionals. Day in and day out you continue to make me look good and feel proud to be your President.

To everyone at First Hebrew Congregation: Thank-you for placing your trust in me and joining me as we work together to build a bright and joyous future.

Shalom.

Jeremy Krantz, President

Message from the Hebrew School Principal,Dear Parents, Students, and Congregants,

When I addressed you at the beginning of the year I said that this was going to be a special year. I committed myself and asked all of those associated with the school to make every challenge an opportunity, to always look forward with hope and enthusiasm. We have all been working very hard to make this happen. The feeling in the school is certainly tangible. There is not only a closer sense of community but an atmosphere of fun and an eagerness to both learn as well as engage. Many of our efforts to improve are bearing fruit and we continue to look to the future with great anticipation.

This month we will have many events which offer you an opportunity to be part of and see for yourselves the great spirit which flows through our school. On December 7th we will have our Bet/ Gimmel Parent participation Program, kicking off our new season of Parent Participation Programs. We will also open our book fair which will be held on the 14th as well. On December 14th I will be offering the first in a series of Coffee and Study with the Principal

programs. These sessions are designed for parents who would like to come a little early before pick up and study together as a group as we explore biblical texts in a manner appropriate for beginners as well as those more seasoned. We will cap off the month with our Chanukiadah on December 21st. All parents are invited to come for this program as we celebrate Chanukah by enjoying the work of the children in a fun and exciting presentation.

There are also opportunities to volunteer and help on these programs, as well as many others, which is always a wonderful way to become more a part of the school and have fun with other parents. While there truly is something for everyone I extend an open invitation for any interested parents to join us at the opening of the school day in our communal prayer, and who knows, if you can answer a question you might even get a Hershey Kiss.

Bi’ Shalom

Message from Sisterhood"They tried to kill us; they failed; let's eat!” Simplistic?

Yes! But it is one way of looking at many Jewish holidays such as Purim, Pesach, and the upcoming children's favorite, Chanukah. It does not, of course, take into account other holidays, in which our celebrations (of course) always including the eating without the narrow escape from destruction. Think of Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, and Shabbat. This article is for December, however, so I'm going to go in the direction of Chanukah.

We celebrate this holiday and the miracle of the oil by making and enjoying latkes and sufganiyot. And we also celebrate by lighting the menorah. In these ways we commemorate the victory of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil. But if you look around your home (or the home in which you may be celebrating) during this holiday, you will see the true miracle- children! Watch the young faces in the candlelight and the little hands snatching treats. Watch them play dreidel and open gifts. Yes, we know why they love this holiday.

Each holiday has its own miracle or themes on which we may reflect. Jewish history is filled, unfortunately, with episodes of persecution. But we are still here. Our children and grandchildren are here. They are our continuing miracle. Come to services and watch Hebrew school students participate in them. Attend a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and watch as a Jewish child assumes adult Jewish responsibilities. In this way, I believe that the miracle is always that the "remnant of Jacob" in fact remains.

So as we approach this children's favorite holiday, Sisterhood wishes everyone a joyous Festival of Lights. Please join us for our next meeting on December 14th. Together with the Men's Club, we will welcome Rabbi Paskind for what is sure to be a delicious breakfast and an interesting discussion. Remember, Sisterhood...Women Enjoying Jewish Life (and this time we'll let the men enjoy it too!). We look forward to seeing you then.

Why are we asking you to donate your time to helping out with Bingo? It generates approximately $20,000 in revenue per year to our operation of the synagogue. The time commitment is only about three hours on a Wednesday night. We now start Bingo at 6:30 pm so you and our customers can get home earlier. If you are opposed to fulfilling your obligation as a member, then pay the $400 Bingo assessment immediately and let Lisa know to take you off the Bingo list. As a member in good standing it is your obligation to participate in this fundraising activity. If the congregation chooses not to continue providing Bingo to the community and forfeiting the OPM (other people’s money), then the congregation will need to be assessed accordingly to raise the $20,000, or determine what services will be cut. Do your part of fundraising and show up for your assigned Bingo night. Bring a book or magazine to read (there is time when you are waiting). If you come late, it is still better than not coming at all. Or, if you choose, send the $400.

Irena Sendler (1910 – 2008) There recently was the death of a 98-year-old lady

named Irena Sendler.

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto.

She had an ulterior motive....

She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German).

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she also carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids).

She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.

The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save over 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family.

Most, of course, had been gassed.

Those kids she helped were placed into foster family homes or adopted.

First Annual Sukkah Hop! Sunday, October, 19, 2008

The idea for this Hop came from our new Rabbi, Rabbi Lee Paskind, who arranged both the calendar and the weather to make this a wonderful occasion. The main idea was for those of us participating to show off our wonderful sukkahs, and for those observing the mitzvah of visiting and eating in our sukkahs to see how easy it is to make one. Perhaps next year, all will wish to show off their wonderful sukkahs. You build the sukkah, and Rabbi Paskind will again be responsible for the weather and the calendar.

This year’s Sukkah Hop was a Progressive Luncheon. We started at the synagogue with Challah, Grape Juice and Brochot, and moved to the first house (Krantz) for appetizers. Then we continued to the others (Schefflein, Radparvar, and Yasuna) for the other courses (Salad, Soup, and Entrée, respectively) and finished at the Rabbi’s house for dessert.

Alice Yasuna

Kehilataynu Editorial Policy and Publishing Information

The synagogue bulletin is a place not only for news and information about FHC and its members, but also a forum for members to place information that may be of interest to their fellow congregants. We are happy to consider all articles submitted to Kehilataynu; however, we reserve the right to edit for style, and length. In addition, all articles submitted by FHC members are labeled as such and do not reflect the opinion of FHC or the Board of Trustees. Please keep the following in mind:Articles and announcements must be received in the FHC office by the last week of each month, five weeks before publication.

Let Everyone Know How ProudWe are of Our Children!

The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in a special way!

We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates. The biography must be submitted to the editor FIVE WEEKS prior to the first day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah month to ensure placement in a timely fashion. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Please submit the biography to the bulletin at bulletin@ FirstHebrew.org or you can mail or fax to the FHC office.

Please keep the following in mind:• Articles and announcements must be

received in the FHC office by the last week of each month, five weeks before publication.

• Please submit your article or announcement via e-mail to [email protected]. If you do not have a computer, and/or your submission is not available in digital format, you may fax, mail, or deliver your (typed) submission(s) to the temple office.

• Please provide original copies of flyers and photos (faxed copies are not suitable for reproduction)— they will be returned.
