First Generation

1. John MCCOY1–4 was born in 1735.5–6 Military: in 1758 his unit was in the Valley of Virginia when Fort Seybert was attacked; they arrived at the fort after all the men were dead and the women and children carried away.4 Location: in 1762 in Mossy Creek, Augusta County, VA .4 Property: Became a neighbor of the Wilsons, purchasing 141 acres from Samuel Wilson adjacent to his first farm in Doe Hill area, VA in 1773.4,7 Location: in 1773 in Doe Hill area, VA 1 mile south of Doe Hill; built a log house on the site of home of Miss Leta Hiner; house was destroyed by fire in 1878.8–9 Location: in 1773 moved from Augusta County to Doe Hill area.4,8 He died in 1796; at the age of 61.4–5 Military: Officer in the Augusta Militia in the Revolutionary War; a Captain by 1777. He asked to resign in 1781 because of his health.3,9–12 He was buried in Doe Hill Cemetery, Doe Hill, VA.5 Individual Note: Coming through Panther Gap most of his seed potatoes fell into the river and had their horses frightened away by wolves.7,9

John MCCOY and Sarah OLIVER were married about 1759.13 Sarah OLIVER1–2,4,14, daughter of Aaron OLIVER and HARRISON, died in 1807; .1–2,14–15 Quote: said when there was danger of an Indian raid that she much preferred to stay home and take her chances with the Indians (rather than go to the local fort or stockade) .16

Oliver MCCOY1,9,21–23 (John-1) was born in 1765.1–2 He was elected in 1794 as Legislator in the General Assembly of Virginia from Pendleton County, VA.24 Property: Pendleton County land patent for 3 acres on South Branch in 1795.25 Military: in 1795 Commissioned as Ensign in Pendleton County, VA militia.26 Property: Pendleton County land patent for 230 acres on Bullpasture in 1797.27 Property: Pendleton County land patent for 300 acres on Buffalo Run in 1797.28 He was elected in 1800 as Justice under the Constitution in Pendleton County, VA.29 Military: in 1800 Commissioned as Lieutenant in Pendleton County, VA militia.26 Property: 175 acres from William and Elizabeth McCoy; 6 other tracts also conveyed for a total of 332 pounds in Bullpasture River Valley, Highland County, VA on 12 Sep 1801.30 Property: sold 66 acres to Abraham Blagg for 48 pounds in Pendleton County, VA on 7 Apr 1807.31 Property: Pendleton County land patent for 115 acres on Crab Run in 1811.32 Illness: weak in body in May 1825.22 Oliver signed a will on 10 May 1825 in Pendleton County, VA.22 He died in 1828; at the age of 63.1–2 Location: Settled on the South Branch near Byrd's Mill.2
