First Fridays Futures Planning On the first Friday of most every month Tia Marsili, Director of Trusts for The Arc of Northern Virginia Special Needs Trust Program,(SNT) and her guests present to families, siblings, adults with disabilities, and others interested in learning about special needs trusts—the tools to consider when developing a plan for the future. Tia and her guest presenters bring their expertise to help you tackle difficult subjects such as, estate plans, divorce, guardianship, child support, and the role of a SNT. First Fridays Futures Planning

January 9, 2015 - Freedom of Choice Yahne Miorini, Principal, Miorini Law PLLC, Guardianship and Conservatorship are not always the solutions for people with disabilities. Yahne Miorini, an attorney in Northern Virginia licensed in DC, MD, and VA, will discuss the alternative options of limited guardianship and conservatorship, the standard for a person to be declared capable of signing a health care power and financial power of attorneys and when limited financial and health care powers may be used.

February 6, 2015 - Letter of Intent- Interactive Writing Workshop Tia Marsili, Director of Trusts, The Arc of Northern Virginia, A Will or a Trust will not necessarily ensure that your wishes for your child are always carried out. A Letter of Intent is a way to have your voice heard when you are not there. This document is prepared by you and your adult child to help those who to interpret your hopes and desires for your child. Find out why you need a Letter of Intent and the purpose of this critical document when planning for your child’s future.

March 6, 2015 - Creating a Financial Roadmap for the Future Josie Hoffman, Senior Financial Officer, Josie will walk you through a process to document future security for your child by using the Merrill Lynch Special Needs Workbook. Particiants will organize thoughts and information that encompass concepts such as daily schedules, likes and dislikes, plans for the future, and putting the financial means in place to accomplish these future dreams and goals.

April 3, 2015 - Organization Legal Authority Lou Nuzzo, Attorney at Law, & Margaret O’Reilly, Attorney at Law, The appointment of a guardian or conservator is an extraordinary measure, as it will revoke the legal rights of the adult respondent, including the right to sign contracts, write checks, decide where to live, and make decisions about medical care and treatment. Lou and Margaret will present how you can best represent your loved one with a disability wthout taking away their lives.

May 1, 2015 - Creating Individualized Housing Options for Adults with DisabilitiesJeannie Cummins Eisenhour, Tia Marsili, and a representative from US HUD will help you under-stand housing as it relates to a Special Needs Trust. We will be showing examples of creative ways to establish living arrangements and how HUD plays a role in housing for people with disabilities.

June 5, 2015 - Futures Planning Tia Marsili, Director of Trusts, The Arc of Northern Virginia, Tia will walk you through the importance of planning for the future of your loved one with a disablity, why trusts are import-ant, and other critical services and programs that you should consider.

July 10, 2015 - Beneficiary Advocacy & the Disbursement Process The Special Needs Trust Program at The Arc of Northern Virginia introduces Wayne Butcher, Beneficary Advocate, and Sarah Mancinho, Trust Associate. Wayne will explain the the role of th beneficiary advocate, and the individual advocacy for trust clients — a new fee for service program. Sarah brings you knowledge on the process of disbursements, how to prepare a disburse-ment, how the trust can and can’t be used. These and other issues will be answered in this two-hour session.
