But Jesus doesn’t just defeat death a handful of times in Scripture. In His resurrection, which we celebrate this and every Easter, Jesus defeats death once and for all. Because of what Jesus did through the cross and empty grave, death has lost its power over all of us who choose to believe in and follow Him. This means that when our physical bodies deteriorate and finally give out, our flesh will die, BUT WE WILL NOT. No, instead we will be more alive than we have ever been. We will understand Paul’s sentiment in 2 nd Corinthians 5:8 where he writes, “We would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” Easter is a reminder that death is not inevitable after all. Instead of death being final, we believe that the death of our physical bodies gives way to eternal life. This is the beauty of the resurrection. Death has no power over us. As a matter of fact, we won’t even experience it but will rather be present with the Lord th precise moment our physi- cal bodies succumb to death. This Easter, March 27 th , I hope you will join me in celebrating the death of death and the victory that is eternal life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Everyone who believes in Him will never die. Do you believe this? The Death of Death Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”– John 11:25-26 (ESV) Never die!? That seems like a bit of a stretch, doesn’t it? As followers of Jesus, we believe that we will be resurrected and able to spend eternity with Jesus and all the saints in heaven. We believe that the death we experience in the physical body is only temporary, but to say that we “never die” takes that thought much further. Such a thought appears to run contrary to our own personal experi- ence. Death looks to be an inescapable reality of life. As children, we learned of the universality of death as our parents explained to us why our favorite pet would not be coming back home. Every time we attend a funeral or visit the grave of a loved one, we are reminded of the inevi- tability of death for all people. Many of us have been forever altered by the encounters we have had with death. From the looks of the world around us, it appears to be a safe bet to say that death is unavoidable. As the old cliché goes, “Nothing is cer- tain in life except for death and taxes.” Yet, Jesus says to Martha as she is in the midst of grieving the death of her brother Lazarus that those who believe in Him, “shall never die.” How could Jesus say such a thing in the midst of this moment that is permeat- ed by the reality of death? How could he tell a grieving woman that her dead brother would not die? Martha responds well to Jesus. I’m afraid my response would have been different, probably something closer to, “What do you mean never die? Have you lost your mind? My brother is dead, Jesus, can’t you see that?!” It’s clear that Jesus did not mean that our bodies would not experience physical death, or else no believer’s physical body would ever be lowered into the grave. So what does Jesus mean when He says that we will nev- er die? I believe Jesus means to show Martha and us the incredible power He has over death. He does so with Martha when He raises Laza- rus from the dead, and He does the same with all believers when He, Himself is resurrected from the tomb. The Death of Death

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”– John 11:25-26 (ESV) Never die!? That seems like a bit of a stretch, doesn’t it? Easter Approaches . . . Easter is early

this year. As spring approached during my childhood, I would often ask my dad when Easter was that year. I can still hear his annual response: “It’s the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.” Of course knowing neither the date of the vernal equinox nor the date of

the first full moon after it, I had to ask my follow-up question: “No, I mean what is the date of Easter this year?” This year, the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox falls on March 27. While we look forward to gathering for Easter celebrations in our sanctuary that morning, we also anticipate our annual “Service of Shadows” on Wednes-day night, March 23. Together we will recall the Holy Week events through scripture, narration, and music. Susan and Scot Cloud will lead us musically as we seek to recreate something of the despair the first century disciples must have felt following the crucifixion of the Lord. With our Ash Wednesday service of February 10, we have already begun our journey toward Easter. Let me encourage you to continue that journey with us on Wednesday evening, March 23, as we gather for our Service of Shadows. Only as we experience some of what the inner circle of Jesus’ followers experienced, apparently unconvinced of the Resurrection of which He had spoken so frequently, can we begin to imagine the joy that was theirs when the One they had watched die on the cross came back to stand among them. Indeed, unspeaka-ble joy came to them that first Easter morning, and it still comes to us over 20 centuries later. He is risen! He is risen indeed!

At the beginning of February we launched our Disciple Making Groups in Sunday School. Adult leaders are teaching 3-4 students of the same gen-der and grade. The material is deeper than normal curriculum and is intended

to help students grow in deeper knowledge and intimacy with the Lord. I really look forward to seeing the results that will come from the investment our adults are making in the lives of our teenagers during the Sunday School hour. Our student leadership team will be formed this month. Students have been working on accomplishing all the require-ments to be on the leadership team. Requirements included: reading John, Acts, Romans, memorizing 4 verses, being at church the majority of Sundays and Wednesdays, sharing your faith with one person, and coming to our student leadership conference. Students have until March 6th to finish the require-ments. I believe God is going to use our student leaders to grow His Kingdom. Leadership is not all about being loud and in charge. It’s about having a servant's heart, a deep love for the Lord, and a heart for the lost. I look forward to watching our students develop into leaders for the Lord. Harvest America is coming up on March 6th at AT&T stadi-um in Arlington. The bus will be leaving the parking lot at 3:30 pm and we will return late that evening. This conference is an evangelistic event. Students are encouraged to bring their lost friends to hear the Gospel. Please pray for salvation! We are preparing for our Spring Break Mission Trip. We are leaving the church at 1pm on Monday, March 7th and will return Thursday evening. We will be going to Rowlett, Texas to help tornado victims. Students will be clearing debris from homes that were demolished during the storm. This is a great opportunity for our students to show the love of Christ to people in true need. We will be staying at FBC Rowlett and will be part-nering with their youth group in most of our work. Please pray for God to use our team as we show God’s love throughout the week.

March 19th – Homeless Ministry in Fort Worth. The bus will leave the back parking lot at 9:45am.

Youth Camp – 1st $50 deposit for Youth Camp is due by March 22nd . Please see Jared for any questions about Youth Camp.

Super Summer- 1st $50 deposit for Super Summer is due by March 23rd. Please see Jared for any questions about Super Summer.

Our Wednesday night initiative is called: “Mentored Madness.” We will be discussing the need for mentors in the lives of stu-dents and helping our students develop relationships with adult church members so that they will have mentor figures in their life.

Also, youth planning to go to camp, if you would like to earn some money to go towards camp, let me or Julie know you would like to help with Parents Night Out! On the 26th (the Saturday before Easter) Grace Baptist will be hosting the Communitywide Easter Egg Hunt! We encourage you to attend! They are starting at 11:00am and will conclude all festivities at 2:00pm. There will be an egg hunt, crafts and games as well as a potluck meal! All are invited!! Reminder for all kids!! I started my journey as CDO director a year ago this month. It has been an education! Let me tell you, the teachers here are amazing! They make my job so much easier! They love the kids and put forth so much effort to make each class day differ-ent and a new experience! Happy 1 year, everyone!
