PrefaceFrom generation to generation, music has held a preeminent and powerful place in the gathering of believers. Since 1977, ILP has been publishing sacred music for worship and prayer. Throughout the years, ten guiding principles have remained at the heart of our planning:

1. The God Who formed us has compromised nothing in His love for us, and is worthy of no less than the highest and best that we have to offer.

2. The most important musical instrument in our prayer and divine worship is the singing congregation.

3. Old is not bad, simply because it is old; new is not better, simply because it is new. Our timeless deposit of faith is richer and invigorated through the prudent blending of old treasures and new gems.

4. Families grow in love of God and one another through shared prayer. Resources for divine worship must involve and speak to all ages to encourage family experiences of faith, drawing us into an indelible wisdom that forms and informs every generation.

5. Our music and our prayer must speak the clear and explicit theology of our Catholic faith. Those who try to be everything to everyone speak to no one.

6. Our linguistic conventions must honor God. We cannot weaken the language of God in the name of “inclusivity.” Although ILP is committed to horizontal sensitivity, we will not tamper with Trinitarian theology. We will make all references to God evident by the capitalization of divine pronouns.

7. Music is the language of the heart and the voice of the spirit. We must publish hymns, songs, psalms and ritual music that resonate within the minds, hearts and memories of those who sing them; for, wherever these melodies live, so their message will grow.

8. Texts and melodies must foster the sacramental journey of each believer, drawing on the wealth of Scripture, the depth of tradition and the unspeakable beauty of ritual.

9. Music must be published in a key that everyone can sing.

10. There need not be a language war between the Vernacular and the Vulgate. While enjoying the accessibility of English, we can continue to be enriched by the use of Latin and other languages.

With these principles informing our every decision, ILP is honored to present the Credo Hymnal. Filling a great need within the Church today, the Credo Hymnal is a traditional compilation that provides a wealth of sacred music while respecting the hermeneutic of continuity by including time-honored works and new, well-crafted compositions from within the last century.

Input from scholars, theologians, liturgists, hymnologists and presbyters during several years of compilation and editing has rendered the Credo Hymnal a treasury of traditional hymns, songs, psalms and Mass settings.

After compiling a base of timeless Public Domain hymns and chants that span seventeen centuries, ILP’s editorial team carefully selected “must have” titles from other publishers, including GIA, OCP, WLP, Hope, Oxford, Abingdon and eleven others.

With the Credo Hymnal, Catholics can at last benefit from a universal experience of substantive sacred music in divine worship from parish to parish.

Additionally, no other hymnal offers such a wealth of traditionally-styled musical settings for conforming psalm texts as found in the Ritual Edition of the Lectionary, thus enriching our ongoing experience of the Liturgy of the Word.

We give thanks to many who have made this hymnal possible: the enormously talented authors, composers and arrangers that created the contents, the tireless engravers and editors that painstakingly and meticulously scrutinized every detail of every musical work, those who licensed the titles herein, and the designers and technicians that carefully crafted these books.

International Liturgy Publications (ILP) is honored to bring you the Credo Hymnal.

May the Word, chant, hymns, songs, psalms and canticles that reside within these pages resound always on our lips, within our hearts and through our lives.

— Reception of Communion — 37

BEFORE COMMUNIONBefore Communion, the Priest says quietly one of the following prayers.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit, through your Death gave life to the world, free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood, from all my sins and from every evil; keep me always faithful to your commandments, and never let me be parted from you.

Or: May the receiving of your Body and Blood, Lord Jesus Christ, not bring me to judgment and condemnation, but through your loving mercy be for me protection in mind and body and a healing remedy.

Then the Priest sings or says aloud:Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. All continue:Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

— Prayers after Receiving Holy Communion — 1203

Prayers

“If we pray, we will believe; if we believe, we will love; if we love, we will serve.” — Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

PRAYERS IN PREPARATION FOR MASS

PRAYER BEFORE MASS

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it, the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to Thee, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship Thee in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

O most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of tenderness and mercy, I, a miserable and unworthy sinner, fly to you with all the affection of my heart, and I beseech your motherly love, that, as you stood by your most dear Son, while He hung on the Cross; so, in your kindness, you may be pleased to stand by me, a poor sinner, and all Priests who today are offering the Sacrifice here and throughout the entire holy Church, so that with your gracious help we may offer a worthy and acceptable oblation in the sight of the most high and undivided Trinity. Amen.

PRAYERS AFTER RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

PRAYER TO THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER (ANIMA CHRISTI)

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from Christ’s side, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds hide me.

Suffer me not to be separated from Thee. From the malicious enemy, defend me. In the hour of my death, call me; and bid me come unto Thee, that I may praise Thee with Thy saints and with Thy angels for ever and ever, Amen.

PRAYER AFTER RECEIVING COMMUNION

O Lord Jesus Christ, who in this wonderful Sacrament has left to us a memorial of Thy Passion: Grant us, we beseech Thee, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of Thy redemption; who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.sam

PRAYERS IN THANKSGIVING AFTER MASS

PRAYER OF SELF-OFFERING (SUSCIPE) Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Receive, Lord, my entire freedom. Accept the whole of my memory, my intellect and my will. Whatever I have or possess, it was You who gave it to me; I restore it to You in full, and I surrender it completely to the guidance of Your will. Give me only love of You together with Your grace, and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more. Amen.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

O Mary, Virgin and Mother most holy, behold, I have received your most dear Son, whom you conceived in your immaculate womb, brought forth, nursed and embraced most tenderly.

Behold him at whose sight you used to rejoice and be filled with all delight; him whom, humbly and lovingly, once again I present and offer him to you to be clasped in your arms, to be loved by your heart, and to be offered up to the Most Holy Trinity as the supreme worship of adoration, for your own honor and glory and for my needs and for those of the whole world.

I ask you therefore, most loving Mother: entreat for me the forgiveness of all my sins and, in abundant measure, the grace of serving him in the future more faithfully, and at the last, final grace, so that with you I may praise him for all the ages of ages. Amen.

PRAYER AFTER MASS

Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that the words which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may, through Thy grace, be so grafted inwardly in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us the fruit of good living, to the honor and praise of Thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

TRADITIONAL PRAYERS

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

OUR FATHER (THE LORD’S PRAYER)

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name;

Thy kingdom come;
