We’ll start off at CrossFire where we’ll spend part of our time doing crazy physical challenges and the other part of our time playing on their cool equipment. Then we’ll head next door to Dulin’s Sports Academy where we’ll spend the night playing soccer, using the batting cages, and maybe even getting a few minutes of sleep.

Notes from France Journal Apr. 24-May 5, 2014 by Andrea Woods

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” - St. Augustine

The day is cold but fair, the sea calm. Wrapped in jackets and scarves, we make our way to the edge of the cliff and gaze down upon tiny figures at the rocky beach below. It’s Normandy: 98 feet down is the beach nicknamed Omaha, scene of the June 6, 1944 landing that started the Allied liberation of France and eventual defeat of Hitler during World War II.

We are a group of American travelers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Nevada and Maryland, here for France Magnifique , a tour through France with emphasis on World War II and the upcoming 70th anniversary of D-Day. The 18 of us in the FUMC group are old friends and well-suited to travel together. Hmmm… what will the other group be like? With delight, we soon learn that they bring only added pleasure to the trip.

We’ve had two days in Normandy: museums, war films, battle sites, the American cemetery, and the church at St. Mere Eglise where American paratrooper John Steele was trapped for two hours hanging from the spire.

Many of us in this group were born during World War II, others soon after. All grew up in the aftermath of that phenomenal event. We heard about it, studied it, knew men who fought in it, had relatives who died in it. The war was woven into our psyches. But now, standing above the beaches where it actually happened, picturing that placid sea turned stormy and turbulent, envisioning those men — many mere teen-agers! — struggling to come ashore, the bravery and perseverance it demanded, the chaos and carnage that ensued, we experience deeply and profoundly the heroism and magnitude of their sacrifice. Awed into silence. Tears inevitable.

I can’t sleep tonight, remembering the line from a psalm that begins, O taste and see… Tasting

and seeing does change reality. Both temporal and spiritual. More on this later….

The very first thing we are taught by our guide Greg is a rule of French civility: always say “Good morning!” before launching into your agenda in a shop or hotel. Bon jour! Always say “thank you” when the situation demands. Merci! And for “thank you very much,” Merci beaucoup! Greg says we will gladden the hearts of our hosts if we simply attempt to speak a bit of the language. We do. Hilariously, but occasionally effectively.

We have been warmly welcomed everywhere. Particularly in Normandy, we are humbled by the gratitude and appreciation the citizens show to Americans. Numerous monuments and statues celebrate American leaders or events; we observe sites being tended with great care by descendants of residents who endured Nazi occupation. Greg says French students are required to visit these sites before completing school, so they never forget. So they will always be grateful.

Rain has followed us almost daily. At Giverny, the home of Impressionist painter Claude Monet, we disembark the coach in a downpour and trudge to the ticket kiosk, umbrellas jostling, providing minimal coverage. Then voila! After touring the house and studio, we emerge into glorious sunshine and go forth to explore the gardens. The Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge, the willows, the rose arches—all are just as he painted them. We love.

What I cherish about today: seeing Monet’s garden at last!... and experiencing the savoir faire of my intrepid (very wet) travel companions.

At our final meal together in a rustic bistro on the mountainside above Nice, we toast Greg for his stellar leadership. The son of a man who served in the French Resistance as a teen-ager, Greg has a deep personal investment in France and WWII. Comprehensive knowledge, unwavering courtesy, and humor are his hallmarks. The leadership he and Pam Jaco, Director of FUMC Senior Adult Ministries, provided set the tone for a beautiful trip. Through the lost passport (it was found), the injured ankle (it was sprained) and various other challenges, both Greg and Pam remained entirely calm and cheerful. No detail was too small for them to attend, no inconvenience too large to offend.

For new perspectives gained, deepened appreciation of ordinary life, and death to a few unfounded assumptions and pre-conceived notions, I say for the whole group: Merci Beaucoup!

The FUMC Safety Team needs your help!

We are looking for folks who are willing to be the "eyes and ears" of Jackson FUMC on Sunday mornings. The primary focus of the FUMC Safety Team is to insure that the parking/exterior areas are welcoming and comfortable for all members as they come and go, walk-through the unused areas of the church, and coordinate any necessary evacuations or emergency situations. In addition, we work with the Greeters and Green Coats to greet folks, and assist the "less-abled" as needed.

We serve 7-9 Sundays per year (the more members we have, the less often we are needed to serve) and "work" a 2 hour shift.

Osteoporosis

“I heard a crack, then boom! I fell and the next thing I know I’m headed to surgery with a broken hip and a busted head.”

This scenario is all too familiar to orthopedic surgeons. Actually, the patient’s weakened hip broke, causing a fall and head lacerations on the way down. The culprit is often osteoporosis, and the broken bones it causes ARE not part of normal aging. Low bone density or osteoporosis affects 55 million Americans. This silent disease will cause about 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men to break a bone if they are affected. The sad fact is 20% of seniors who break a hip die within one year from complications related to the fracture or the surgery to repair it.

We don’t think of our skeletons as living breathing organs, but indeed they are. Bones need care and feeding, just like our other organs. When you lose too much bone or make too little, your skeleton shrinks in mass or “heaviness” and resembles a honeycomb. Once weakened, the bone is more likely to break from falls, everyday activities like bumping in to something; even sneezing.

Prevention should begin in childhood and continue throughout your life. Whatever your age, start now to protect your bones…it’s never too late.

•Take a supplement of 1,200 mg of Calcium and 600IU of Vitamin D per day. The Vitamin D helps your body use Calcium. It is critical that you take the 2 vitamins together.

•Eat a well balanced diet high in Calcium: milk, yogurt, dark leafy greens,fortifiedOJ,andsoybeans.

•Get regular exercise; it strengthens bone. (I know I sound likeabrokenrecordonfitness!)

•Avoid the smoking, limit alcohol, and cut soda intake as well. (although experts aren’t sure why there is a link between soda and low bone density.)

• Limit using large amounts of antacids containing aluminum-check drug labels.
