IntroductionRaising money means that you can have even more fun with your pack.

You can have a cake sale, a barbecue, or maybe a football game. They can all raise money. Raising money is a great way to help people around you and have your own fun.

If you know how to look after money, you can help to raise money for your Cub Pack. You can come up with ideas to raise money and help to collect it.

We’ve worked with RBS MoneySense to help us create this pack. If you want to know more about it, please go to: www.rbs.co.uk/moneysenseforschools

Four things to do when raising money1. Shout it loud and proud: Tell people about you

what you are doing. If you’re being sponsored, always have a sponsorship form with you. Tell them how much you want to raise.

2. Know what you are raising money for: People who give you money will want to know what it is for. So make sure you know what you’re going to spend it on.

3. Aim high: Try to raise more than you spend. Try not to spend any money and do your best to get friends and family to donate anything you need.

4. Where will you raise money? Pick a good place for your event. It should be the right size for the number of people coming and have what you need.

Activity: Coming up with ideasThis activity will help you to think about the ways you could raise money.

You could learn how to help your leader plan a fundraising event.

How to do the activity1. Think of three ideas for events you could run to raise

money. Write your ideas in the space below.

2. Pick your favourite idea.

3. Write down the answers to these three questions:

• What things to do you need to do before you hold your event?

• What equipment will you need for your event?

• Who might be able to help you plan it?

4. Give the ideas to your Leader, they may come in handy later on!

We held a cake sale. My dad helped me bake a cake for it and I drew some posters. We sold them at school to raise money for a camping weekend.

Activity: Lights, camera, action! To let people know about a fundraising event you just need some great ideas.

In this activity you will come up with an idea for a TV advert for a fundraising event.

How to do the activity1. Come up with an idea for a TV advert for a fundraising

event. It can be any event you want, as long as it is going to raise money. Think about the adverts you have seen on TV. Are there any that you like? What is it about them that you like? Use the space below to write down your idea or draw it with pictures.

2. Grab some popcorn. You are all going to perform your adverts to each other.

When we organised a talent show we had to design posters. People had to audition and then we had a big show at the end that our parents came to. The money from the show was for a new minibus so we could go on trips.

Activity: Charity true or false How much do you know about charities in the UK?

Now is the time to test your knowledge with our charity true or false game.

How to do the activity1. On one wall of your meeting room is the word ‘true’.

On the other wall is the word ‘false’.

2. Your Cub Scout Leader will read out some facts. If you think the fact your leader reads out is true, run to the side of the room with the word true. If you think the fact your leader reads out is false, run to the side of the room with the word false. You have to make your mind up quickly.

Our school had a non-uniform day for Comic Relief. Some of us came in fancy dress. I give to charity through school events and things we do in Cubs. It’s good to help other people.

Activity: Getting our of poverty What is poverty? If you don’t know, this activity will teach you all about it. If you do, you can learn even more.

Then you’ll know why people like to raise money for charity. Maybe it will make you want raise money yourself?

How to do the activity1. You will be given a set of ‘getting out of poverty cards’

and a counter.

2. Your counter is your person fighting to get out of poverty. You need to get to the end of the journey on the board below as quickly as you can. Take it in turns to pick a card. Some cards will allow you to move out of poverty. Others will pull you back. After you have used a card, return it to the bottom of the pile.

Sometimes I don’t have enough money to buy the things I want. But I can do jobs around the house for my mum and she gives me a bit extra.
