Cubs/Natwest pack – first draft

Cover concept Budgeting - Giant piggy bank

IntroductionMoney makes a difference to all of us. One day you will need to think about how you’ll pay the rent, for food, travel, bills and even transport.

You could be saving to buy a computer console or dreaming of the perfect holiday. We all need to know how to best manage our money.

We’ve worked with NatWest MoneySense to help us create this pack. If you want to know more about it, please go to: www.natwest.com/moneysenseforschools

Ways to pay for thingsPeople keep their money in a bank account. This means that your money is looked after by the bank. There are different ways you can get your money out:

1. Cheque: A written order which tells a bank to pay your money to another person.

2. Cash card: A plastic card that allows you to take money out of a bank account. You put it into a cash withdrawal machine and type in four numbers that make up your Personal Identification Number (PIN).

3. Debit card: A bit like a cash card. You can use a debit card to take out money from a bank account using a cash withdrawal machine but it also allows you to pay for goods in shops. When you pay in a shop, you’ll be asked to enter your PIN using a keypad, the same number that you use to withdraw money at a cash machine.

4. Credit card: A plastic card which allows you to buy things and pay for them later. You have an agreed limit on the amount you can borrow, and if you don’t pay the total in full by the due date the amount you owe will keep going up and up. You need to be over 18 and meet certain conditions to get a credit card.

Activity: Be a bankerTalking about money can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be scary.

In this game you will imagine how you would act in different situations when talking about money.

How to do the activity1. You are going to play a role-play game. One of you

will be a banker and the other a customer.

2. You will act out two situations read out by your Leader.

3. Think about how you would act in each situation if you were the banker or customer. Can you both be happy with the outcome?

I save money in my piggy bank. I put some of my pocket money in there every week to save up for things I want.

Activity: What's my job? What is your dream job? Is it a firefighter, an actor or maybe a doctor?

Here you will think about what your dream job might be and how much you could get paid for it.

How to do the activity1. Act out your dream job without talking. The other

teams have to guess what the job is.

2. Once you have all had a go, your leader will give you a set of cards. You must work in your teams to match the jobs on each card with the correct salary. A salary is how much someone is paid for that job in a year.

3. Your leader will then tell you the correct answers. Are you surprised by any of them? Do you think the wages are fair?

I’d like to make computer games one day. One of my dad’s friends does it and it looks fun. You should always do something you enjoy.

Activity: Snakes and laddersMoney can help you do things. Not having enough can also stop you.

This activity will help you think about what money means to you. You will see what it can do to your daily life. It’ll make you think about the ways in which you could look after your money and do the things you want.

How to do the activity1. You are going to create your own snakes and ladders

board game about money.

2. Go to the blank snakes and ladders board at the end of this pack.

3. Your Leader will then read out a number of situations. Decide within your teams if the situation is a snake that will set the people back in the game, or a ladder that will move them forward. You also need to decide how many squares forward or back the situation would send you. Write the situation in a square on your grid and draw in your snake or ladder.

4. Once you’re done have a go at your game of snakes and ladders.

Have more snakes and ladders funOnce you’ve finished your snakes and ladders game, why not have a go at the one online. Go to www.natwest-pocketmoney.com and click ‘magazine’ (issue 6).

Make saving easyThinking of buying a new bike? Want to save up for a computer console or radio? Then Pounder’s GoalSaver application can help make it easy.

I don’t really know how much money I spend. I just spend it as I get it. Sometimes I try and save up for something, but I’m not very good at it.’
