Pipe Organ Encounters is an educational outreach program of the American Guild of Organists. Major funding for Pipe Organ Encounters is provided by the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America. Additional support is provided by the American Institute of Organbuilders, the Jordan Organ Endowment, and the National Endowment forfor the Arts. An OverviewComeCome to internationally renowned St. Olaf College and historic Shattuck-St. Mary’s School for the rewarding opportunity to learn more about the pipe organ and its construction, to be instructed by experienced faculty, to visit, hear and play outstanding instruments, and to have the chance to meet and interact with peers who share an interest in thethe King of Instruments. POE is designed for teenagers, ages 13-18, who have achieved an intermediate level of keyboard proficiency. Previous organ study is not required.

POE HighlightsThe vibrant arts boarding school of Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault and the rich artistic heritage of St. Olaf College in Northfield will provide the exciting environment for a week-long immersion in the world of the organ, highlighted by a hymn festival and a tour of the Hendrickson Organ Company pipe organ builder shop in St. Peter, Minnesota.Minnesota.

Featured InstrumentsInstruction, practice, and concert facilities will be spread among the campuses of St. Olaf, Shattuck-St. Mary’s, and in area churches in Northfield and Faribault. Featured instruments will include:

Holtkamp, III manual, 90 ranks, Boe Chapel, St. Olaf College.Dobson, III manual, 42 ranks, Studio A: Skifter Hall, St. Olaf College.Tour to Hendrickson, II manuals, 45 ranks, First Lutheran Church, St. Peter.

Faculty MembersFaculty will include professors from St. Olaf College, distinguished organist graduates of St. Olaf, concert organists and professional teachers from the Twin Cities and the Midwest.

AccommodationsAccommodationsAccommodations and meals will be at the Shattuck-St. Mary’s School dormitories, 1000 Shumway Avenue, Faribault MN 55021. The arrangements at Shattuck-St. Mary’s include dorm chaperones trained in safety and security, a school nurse, and piano practice rooms. For daily instruction and activities, students will shuttle betbetween the two campuses in insured school buses.

TravelThe city of Faribault, MN is within a 50-minute drive of the Twin Cities and the Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport. For those students travelling by air, we will provide a group shuttle from the airport to Faribault on Sunday afternoon, June 24, and a return shuttle to the airport on Friday afternoon June 29.
