Breakthrough:

Your Giving Powers This Radical New Treatment for Adult Lymphoma

W ith your generous donations driving our pioneering research, Moffitt Cancer Center is playing a critical role in a new lifesaving therapy.

It’s called CAR-T. This revolutionary treatment involves taking immune-system cells from the patient, genetically engineering them, then putting them back to fight cancer. CAR-T literally reprograms the body’s T-Cells to seek out and destroy adult lymphoma.

With the direction of our own Dr. Frederick Locke and his team, Moffitt was among the first to offer this new treatment to clinical trial patients. “It puts a GPS navigation on the front of the cell,” Dr. Locke says. “So when they’re infused back in, they know where to go to kill the lymphoma.”

CAR-T has produced incredible results. In pivotal registration early testing, 39 percent of adult patients showed no signs of lymphoma cancer six months after receiving one treatment of CAR-T. Several Moffitt patients receiving this therapy remain in remission more than a year later.

Lymphoma will strike thousands of people this year alone. But now they can have renewed hope because of the generous support of donors like you.

How Your Generosity Helps Overcome Drug Resistance in Prostate Cancer Treatment

When prostate cancer strikes, doctors often treat it by reducing the male hormones, called androgens, either by surgery or with drugs.

Most patients have success with this treatment. But many often find that their cancer later becomes resistant to drug therapy, and then it spreads to other parts of the body. This type of cancer is even more difficult to treat.

But researchers at Moffitt have discovered a mechanism that causes the drug resistance, and they’ve identified a new drug that targets it. Performing extensive tests, researchers discovered a protein that causes prostate cancer cells to be more receptive to androgens even when the cells have been treated with anti-androgen therapy.

This was a significant breakthrough, and it led to the next step. Moffitt researchers then invented a drug that targets the protein, blocking the growth of the drug-resistant prostate cancer cells.

Advances in Immunotherapy:

Your Support Fuels This New Vaccine for Breast Cancer

Immunotherapy — using the patient’s own immune system to kill cancer cells — is the latest in cancer medicine, and Moffitt is at the forefront.

Physician-scientist Brian J. Czerniecki, M.D., Ph.D., is leading a team of Moffitt researchers to use immunotherapy to create vaccines from immune cells called dendritic cells. These cells are taken from each individual patient and then used to create a personalized vaccine that directs an attack on the progression of breast cancer by targeting the HER2 protein.

This vaccine is for early-stage breast cancer patients with HER2 positive disease. The HER2 protein is involved in one-fourth of all breast cancer tumors. This is an especially aggressive form of cancer.

Moffitt researchers found that immune cells can’t recognize HER2 cancer cells as the cancer progresses. So they uncovered how to reactivate the immune system to target HER2 cancer cells.

The research was so promising that it moved to clinical trials. Doctors took cells from patients, and then injected the patients with a personalized vaccine. Tests showed that the vaccine did stimulate an immune system response. In fact, a full 80 percent of patients showed an immune response in the area of their cancer.

This is a significant breakthrough. In fact, it’s a lifesaving breakthrough for more and more women facing breast cancer, as you’ll read in the story that follows about Barbara.

The Breast Cancer Vaccine at Work:

How Barbara’s Life Was Saved with Research That You Made Possible

It was a happy time of year with the holidays approaching. Barbara was looking forward to her office

holiday party and trying on some dress clothes to wear. That’s when she noticed something strange.

The clothes felt oddly snug just in her left arm and across her chest. She thought it was unusual, but it didn’t seem to be any cause for alarm. But the strange occurrences continued.

A few days later, she noticed that a large patch of her skin began to feel warm to the touch. A few days after that, that patch of skin changed, becoming dimpled like an orange peel. She started to worry. Something was wrong.

She saw her doctor, and after an exam, his face went pale. Barbara braced herself. He looked at her, took a breath, and said, “This looks like inflammatory breast cancer.”

Barbara was shocked. “My mind was swimming,” she says. “I sobbed for a day.”

Her type of cancer is somewhat rare, but it’s deadly. It often isn’t detected until it reaches stage 3. There’s usually no lump, and it doesn’t show up on a mammogram.

“I was stage 3 at diagnosis,” Barbara says. “The mass, along with my lymph nodes located all over my chest were initially inoperable. That’s the last stage before metastatic and terminal.”

Determined to fight, Barbara began learning about her disease, and that’s how she found out about the experimental clinical trials at Moffitt. “It was time,” Barbara says, “to get down to business.”

She got in touch with Brian J. Czerniecki, M.D., Ph.D., a brilliant physician-researcher at Moffitt, and was accepted into the clinical trials for the breast cancer vaccine described in the previous section.


She wanted to have this experimental treatment, both for the hope it offered her and for the chance to help others with her type of cancer. “Moffitt is out front,” she says, “leading with breast cancer vaccine research and clinical trials.”

Barbara went ahead with the experimental treatment, hoping for the best. Her hopes were confirmed. The treatment was a success. “At this point,” she says, “I have no evidence of cancer left in my body.” This is the difference you can make in patients’ lives.
