Clearing the airwaves with better communications

The number of air passengers is on the rise. The volume of air cargo is increasing. Energy, staff costs and competition: up, up, up. And security challenges continue to grow.

In an industry where everything seems to be going up, up and away, digital radio communi-cations can keep airport operations down to earth. The right radio communications system can help airports streamline operations, manage flights, save money and improve security.

Streamline operations

In terms of communication, running a major airport is as complex as running a big event — the Olympic Games, maybe — but an airport has to keep running all the time every day.

Number of people. No other facilities need to connect so many people on such a limited geographical area with such a huge number of calls. A flexible digital radio communication system can help you meet these needs.

Area to cover. A major airport has at least 30-40 km of facilities. A proper radio network can deliver radio coverage efficiently to all areas of the airport — inside, outside or un-derground. That includes:

• Underground car-parks • Baggage and cargo facilities • Aircraft repair hangars • Plus: Users need to stay connected while

they move between facilities.

Variety of users. There are many groups of users and they are all very different, with different needs. Typical user groups for air-port digital radio communication systems include:

• Tower and apron control • Ground handling services • Follow-me • Security personnel • Emergency and rescue services • Airlines • Catering services.

The key to streamlining airport operations: choose a radio communication system that lets the many different user groups have the experience of using their own private radio network. Look for a system that offers true Virtual Private Networks. Each organization can then man-age their communications exactly as they need.

Manage flights

Busy airports manage hundreds of flights a day, and each flight requires that dozens of em-ployees communicate with each other. Some employees, like load masters, work on one flight at a time. Others, like ramp agents, serve several flights.

With a proper radio network, each flight can have a dedicated talk group. All the people serv-ing a flight are then put into this talk groups, and they can then talk to each other simply by keying the push-to-talk button on their radio terminal.

A person serving several flights can follow communications in all her groups by using the priority-scanning feature on her radio.

Save money Case Beijing International Airport

With around 1,500 flights each day, Beijing is among the busiest airports in the world. Before the implementation of the airport’s digital radio communica-tion system, airport and airline person-nel had to manage the entire operation using analogue radios that operated over just 15 channels. The old system did not offer enough capacity and led to a significant bottleneck.

The airport’s replacement digital TETRA system now serves around 7,000 users with improved coverage, voice quality, advanced services and a massive reduction in queuing.

110,000 calls per day, no problem

At peak times, the airport’s TETRA system provided by Airbus Defence and Space has been proven to deal successfully with nearly 110,000 calls per day with no failures.

Today, professionals from across the airport use the new system, including ground staff, airline personnel, air traffic controllers, security officers, shuttle bus drivers, and food service suppliers.

So far, Airbus DS has set up TETRA radio coverage in five key airports in China: Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Chengdu. The systems are linked to form a nationwide network, enabling subscribers to roam and communicate between different airports.

For example, the more than 3,000 network users at Paris airports operated by Aéroports de Paris share the use of a single radio communication network – and its cost.

Choose a reliable and secure radio network that is proven in practice. Even a short break in communications could cause immense disruption and end up costing a lot of money. Better reliability also means lower maintenance and repair costs.

Improve security

Aéroports de Paris, for example, has integrated state-of-the-art security technologies into its radio network from Airbus Defence and Space. For instance, the airports have incorpo-rated inspection equipment into their baggage sorting areas and systemized video surveillance posts. Now Aéroports de Paris inspects 100% of the cargo and baggage in the hold and 50% to 100% of its carry-on luggage.

Plus, the radio network allows you to let all staff members know — immediately — if there's an emergency. Radio net-works from Airbus DS offer dozens of security features that help airports meet their security requirements.
