As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.” FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE CALLER No. 21 Vol. 13 ~ November 7, 2017 From the Preacherman…. The end of the year draws near. The days will be full to the brim with holidays, holy days, family engagements, and church events. Likely as not, our calendars are already overflowing and you are wondering where to put everything. It is the nature of things for life to overwhelm, suddenly or slowly, and to cheat you out of paying attention to the things that really matter. Before the blizzard begins, take a moment to decide what matters and where you will put your energy and attention. There is much going on at church. We will celebrate baptisms this Sunday in worship. I hope you can be here to share in that sacrament with us. Thanksgiving is coming soon, with an anniversary dinner for all who can make it at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 19. We have much to be grateful for in our church and in our lives. This church will soon mark one year of occupancy in this building. You have stories of losses and hope to tell. People are hungry to hear those, and you have them. The Stewardship Campaign has begun and hopefully you have received a letter and pledge card in the mail. Offer some thought to what you may give to our church budget in 2018. Your pledge helps us to know what will be offered and gives you a goal to meet as the days of the new year roll by. The Capital Campaign continues as we seek to pay off the small amount of building debt which remains. If you have not already given to our campaign, please give some thought to that need as well. With December comes Advent, my first season of expectancy and anticipation with you in this place. I know, it’s too early to think about Advent and Christmas, but we either plan for the season or it rushes upon us and devours all of our dreams. Even now, start to create space and time for the holy to be born into your lives. Christmas does not have to be so busy. Say “yes” to some things, but say “no” to others in an intentional effort to listen and see God again in this world. Finally, who can you invite to share in the life and love of this church? There is no better time to consider doing that than now. People who have dropped out of church might be open to the serious discipleship and inquiry, even open questions, that occur in this community of faith. We don’t have all of the right answers, nor even all of the correct questions, but we do know some, and we are willing to ask and follow simultaneously. On such decisions great faith is built. Let us ask and follow and hope. Peace….Chris

CALLER No. 21 Vol. 13 ~ November 7, 2017

From  the  Preacherman….

Pictures will be available for Christmas. Anniversary Celebration Meal Our FCC Fellowship Team is planning an Anniversary Celebration Meal on Sunday, November 19, at 5 PM. The menu is ham, green beans, scalloped potatoes, salad and dessert. The cost will be $8.00 per person with children 6 and under free. We request that you make reservations on Sunday the 12th at church or contact the church office. This will help us know how many to prepare for. You may pay when you make your reservation or that evening. All youth groups will meet that evening, so we expect a big crowd. We will be asking for volunteers for a cleanup crew. Canned Food Drive November 19th is Thanksgiving Sunday. As part of our worship experience that day, we ask you to consider helping to feed the hungry. Please bring several non-perishable food items into the sanctuary with you that day. They will be collected during worship. Dear Friends of First Christian, Thank you so very much for your kind donation to the Church in Dad’s memory. His Owensboro church friends were ones he held in high regard after his move to Indianapolis. He would be so proud to know he was remembered with a donation to his Church home. Sandra Steele Bowling

From the very beginnings of the movement, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is

still committed to higher education. Currently, over 50,000 students attend our fourteen Disciples related colleges and universities or seven seminaries and divinity houses. On November 19, our Church will collect the Thanksgiving offering. Your gift to the Thanksgiving offering helps to support the work of our institutions of higher learning in many ways: financially supporting Disciples related schools, providing undergraduate scholarships and support for spiritual life offices, and providing scholarships and support for those pursuing theological education.
