As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.” FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE CALLER No. 14 Vol. 14 ~ July 24, 2018 From the Preacherman…. I was fourteen years old when the greatest movie musical of all time appeared on the big screen. You can argue with me if you want (and you’ll be wrong), but The Blues Brothers (1980) is the best, hands down. It includes in its cast not only John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd singing the Theme from Rawhide, but also, astonishingly, James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, John Lee Hooker, a host of incredible musicians and even a backup singer named Chaka Khan (yep, look it up). I remember being captivated by the music, and still am, but also by the line repeated throughout the film, as Jake and Elwood Blues seek to raise enough money to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised. “They aren’t going to catch us,” Jake says at one point. “We’re on a mission from God.” I’m sure that plenty of people thought that line was more than a little irreverent, perhaps even blasphemous, but it has stuck with me for almost four decades in the form of a question: what is my mission from God? Again and again I have returned to that question in the five churches I have served as pastor over the last 25 years. It has become both a proximate question and an ultimate question. What am I to do right now, today, this week, and what am doing long term? Where does my life of faith lead me in the future? When I came to Owensboro in 2017 that mission was simply learning who you are and what God is doing in this place. It was a surprise to some people that I didn’t seem to have an agenda, a five-point plan or a mission statement. My call has been much simpler: to listen and learn from you and from the God who lives and moves among you already. It has been fascinating to see all the ways God is at work here and the ministries you are a part of in this place. We have grown to know each other better in our time together and that has been a gift from God to me. Missions change, however. Jake and Elwood saved the orphanage. As we have grown to know each other better the focus of my mission here has slowly changed as well. When Jesus calls his first disciples in Luke’s Gospel he tells Peter, “Launch out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch” (5:4). It seems that God is not calling me to lead you to be busier Christians or more involved in numerous activities. Most of us are busy enough. We have traded presence for productivity and have difficulty seeing where God is at work in the world. So, instead of busier, I want to invite you to go deeper. I don’t know exactly what it means to launch out into the deep water. That’s what a mission is for, to work on it until you do know. But it is my mission from God. Jake and Elwood would approve. Peace….Chris

From the Preacherman….

It has been fascinating to see all the ways God is at work here and the ministries you are a part of in this place. We have grown to know each other better in our time together and that has been a gift from God to me. Missions change, however. Jake and Elwood saved the orphanage.
