“Mid-Summer”

“What does the LORD require of

you but to do justice, and to love

kindness, and to walk humbly

with your God?” Micah 6:8

I hold these words close to my heart. They are the

words of the prophet Micah, as he counsels Israel about

how to stay pure in heart and full of faith.

August is an “in-between” month. There’s no major

holiday to rally around. It’s a time for last minute

vacations and preparing for school. It’s a time of rest

and preparation. In the middle of the summer heat and

humidity, I feel my own energy waning. But Micah

calls me back to what is important. The prophet

reminds me what God calls his children to do – no

matter the weather.

The following untitled poem by Judith Gass is one that

concerns “mid-life,” but I think it’s appropriate for

mid-year, also.

“Why are you waiting to begin your life? Do you think

the world must care and come soliciting?

Listen to the knocking at the door of your own heart. It

is faint because you have not answered. You have

fooled yourself with preparations. Time left laughing

while you considered the possibilities.

Wake up. You have slept long enough.

Wake up. Tomorrow may be too late.

When you finally dare open the door, your life will

begin arriving – cautiously at first, unbelieving that the

gate, so long locked against the tide, has finally been

opened.

Then with swells of neglected dreams, Then with

waves of joyful revelation, the sea will follow. You

will be swept by the full and magnificent tides of your

own longing…

That no one else can give you. That no one else can

claim.”

As our church begins to prepare for the Fall Season

and beyond, I find new hope in these words. May we

live into God’s plan for our lives and our church more

fully with each passing day.

Can you believe it! On September 26th the

First Christian Church – Disciples Personal

Care Pantry - will be TWO years old! This

pantry was established to meet a need within the community

not covered by Grace Ministries (food) or Jubilee Christian

Church (food & clothing). From that first day when 4

people showed up for assistance, the pantry has grown to

over 250 registered clients with an average of 74 clients per

month.

The only publicity now used is “word of mouth” yet the list

of clientele continues to grow! The Pantry Team still

anticipates a 25% increase in the next year and hopes to

expand its territory to include all areas of the Burkburnett

School District; and the Oklahoma areas serviced by Grace

Ministries in the next 2 to 3 years. We wanted to do that

last year but the clientele in the established area grew so

much it had to be postponed. To do this it becomes

necessary to reach outside the church to the local community

and various charities to help financially.

Clients served in July: 61

New Clients in July: 6

3-month Average of Clients: 70

Money spent in July: $1011.07

Money collected thru July 23rd: $691

Presently we are down about $1700 towards our goal of

$15,000. PLEASE HELP!! This mission serves a

grateful and needy group of our Burkburnett family.

Thanks to Skip Applegate for giving up the janitor’s closet

so we can have a place to put the pantry overflow! Thanks

also to Jhan Van Donge for coordinating this effort.

Do you know our pantry team? They are Margaret

Brad & Shirley Gritton, Hal Halpain, Gayle Hallgarth,

occasion: Audrey & Leah Hanseman; Janet Fowler;

I’ve missed someone. Please let me know so I can recognize

them.

Texoma Gives – September 7th

From 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. on September 7, texomagives.org

will accept donations to raise unrestricted dollars for area

nonprofits in Texoma. It is a day of giving to celebrate the

nonprofits in Texoma.

TEXOMA GIVES is a 16-hour day of giving that provides

critical funding for our area nonprofits. Wichita Falls Area

Community Foundation is partnering with area nonprofits to

give thousands of donors from every community in a 24-

county area of North Texas and southern Oklahoma a

chance to raise funds for local needs.

The purpose of an area-wide day like TEXOMA GIVES is

to bring the region together on one day and as one

community, raising money and awareness for Texoma

nonprofits. This initiative, organized by Wichita Falls Area

Community Foundation, provides citizens an on-line

resource (www.texomagives.org) to find and support

nonprofit organizations whose missions align with their

passions.

Local non-profits agencies involved with this day of giving

include: Burkburnett Boys and Girls Club, Grace Ministries,

Friends of the Burkburnett Library, Burkburnett Project

Back to School, and the Senior Citizens Center of

Burkburnett - as well as many worthy organizations that

serve Wichita County, Wichita Falls, and the whole of

Texoma.

All donations made on September 7th through

texomagives.org are eligible for “Prize Money” that will be

awarded throughout the day. “Prize Money” has been made

possible by the various sponsors listed on the website’s

homepage. What an impact we can make in Texoma when

we join together for Texoma Gives!

Stars and stripes

Since the early 1800s various groups have

observed a day to display the American flag.

Presidents Woodrow Wilson (in 1916) and Calvin

Coolidge (in 1927) issued proclamations marking

June 14 as National Flag Day. But it wasn’t until

August 3, 1949, that Congress approved June 14

as a day of national observance. President Harry

Truman signed it into law.

The American flag has changed designs more than

any other flag in the world. In fact, the United

States didn’t have a standardized flag until 1912!

And even after standardization, the flag changed

three more times with the addition of new stars

representing new states.

Beautiful

bouquet from

Brent and

Lydia Haworth.

Thank you,

Shirley Crane
