My Friends: The holidays are past and the new year 2018 has begun.

It’s cold outside and this time of year, I spend much of it inside my

warm house often browsing through recipes I have clipped during the

year. I find several for different ways to make beef stew. I begin to feel

the warmth that comes with that simple meal. Crisis Control Ministry is

requesting CANNED BEEF STEW for their clients during the month of

February. When you are at your grocer,

pick up a few cans. for those who can’t.

Place them in the white box in the Education Wing foyer and they

will be delivered to the Ministry. Soon you will begin to feel that

same warmth! Thank you again for sharing so generously.

FROM THE MODERATOR:

Dear fellow members of First Christian Church,

We have just heard from our Transition Team. We thank them for all their hard work and for their willingness to examine all options for the future of this congregation. While many of us may have immediate reactions to their recommendations, let us take the time to understand the underlying reasons and think through the implications of each one. As we analyze, evaluate, pray and dis-cuss, we should remember that they are to be considered one by one and not as a package, and each can be accepted, altered, or ignored. Some months ago I wrote about a number of past members whose large bequests have meant so much to this congregation over the years. It is time to add one more to the list--Bobby Joe Her-ring. We are grateful for his generosity to the church during his many years of membership and also that he remembered us when he drew up his will. We have just received a significant gift from his estate--$50,000--that will help to build up the reserves which have shrunk so much in re-cent years. Speaking of generosity, December saw many pledges being paid in full, and for 2017 the final total of congregational giving, pledged and unpledged, surpassed what the budget anticipated. Thanks to the care of the chairs of our ministries and committees, we also spent less than we budgeted in a number of areas. The fees we received for the use of our facilities increased. The net result is that we ended the year with a balanced budget, with no need to draw on our reserves to cover a deficit. This is a significant departure from the pattern of recent years. It is an achievement in which every member played a part, and we should all celebrate it. It is also a result we need to repeat every year as we go forward. Let us all be alert to ways we can increase giving and income and cut expenses in our church activities.

Yours in Christ, Doug

Transition Team Update

Interim Minister, Ken Massey Reflecting on the Final Transition Team Event

We had a well-attended and energetic meeting around our Congregational Report on Sunday the

28th. Thank you for your presence and your participation and thank you Transition Team for your

great commitment and leadership. This was the final event to be organized by your Transition Team,

but likely not the last time we will gather around a meal to discuss plans for the future.

What’s next? As I shared with the group at the meeting, Steven Covey is fond of saying “you

cannot talk your way out of a situation you behaved yourself into.” Churches all over this country

have “behaved” themselves into a status quo that keeps them busy doing things that have minimal

impact on their mission. We have to talk about how to get beyond these “doldrums” to be sure, but

talking is not the solution. Our talk must lead to substantive change in the way we invest our time

and energy.

That’s what the recommendations in the Congregational Report need to do. They need to lead

us into action that moves FCC into a new chapter of mission and ministry.

After some revision to the Report, based on this most recent meeting, the Transition Team

will present the final draft to FCC’s Board. At that point, the Board can make other changes or bring

it as is to the church for approval.

Once approved, my assumption is that The Board will begin to make assignments so that rec-

ommendations can be implemented in a timely way. Please keep praying for this process and be in-

volved in any way you can.

After approval, the Pastor Search Team will publish The Report and use it in their search

process. The prayers you have been offering up for our Transition Team can now shift to the Search

Team. As you know, theirs will be a pivotal task.

May God continue to bless and guide us!

Ken

Hello all!

Peace!

Kaitlin Mundy

Thanks for supporting our youth at

January was full of fun activities, lessons and conversa-tions about our role in God's creation. We are beyond blessed that we had 19 youth attend our Lock-in New Year's Celebration earlier this month!

February will be just as exciting! This month's theme is Communion. We will not only study the Last Supper story, but we will also look at other stories in the Bible where food, fellowship, and God's grace were interwoven (Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath, Feeding the 5,000, etc.)

If you would like to know how you can support our youth or get involved in our ministry, please contact me at (828) 713-2570 or email at [email protected].

There will be an Ash

Wednesday service at 6:00 p.m.

on February 14.

The first Sunday in Lent is

February 18 and devotionals

will be available on the tables

outside the church office and in

the Narthex.

Easter lily orders are due by March 11. The cost is

$15.50 each. Order forms will be available on the web-

site and in the worship bulletins.
