Its nothing specific or tangible that I can put my finger on. But its there, nonetheless. Is it nature or nurture? In other words, that part of ourselves that we want to pass on to our grandchildren – is it in the genes or is it something they absorb from the family and culture in which children grown? As you reflect on leaving a legacy, I hope you consider taking a Legacy Journey together during our special Sunday offering this month. Leaving a Legacy

We all can help build a spiritual center, a wellspring of tradition, generosity, and value for posterity. Cultivation is our common work: nourishing those bodies, feeding that flame, tending these gardens. Preserving tradition, inspiring generations, truly leaving a legacy for the future...that is that work we have before us. Listen to Ralph Milton’s thoughts:

“I’d like to leave a legacy for Zoe and Jake. I’m not talking about money. If there’s some left when I go, it may be soon spent and forgotten. Every once in a while, when Jake or Zoe has done or said something delightful, their parents will say, ‘Just like Grandma Bev,’ or, ‘Sure takes after you, grandpa.’ They intend it as a compliment, and it’s music to our ears. “We all would like to believe that there is something good in us that we have passed on to the next generation. It’s a kind of immortality, I expect. Or at least I hope. I’d really like to see my grandchildren become adults and move out into the world. It’s not likely I’ll be around too much longer than that. But I like to think that part of me is in the their bodies, their minds, their souls, that they in turn will leave as a legacy to their children and their grandchildren. It’s nothing specific or tangible that I can put my finger on. But it’s there, nonetheless. “Is it nature or nurture? In other words, that part of ourselves that we want to pass on to our grandchildren – is it in the genes or is it something they absorb from the family and culture in which children grown?”

As you reflect on leaving a legacy, I hope you consider taking a Legacy Journey together during our special Sunday offering this month.

Giving thanks and praying for you! Your fellow laborer,

Rev. Joe Greemore

This poem was submitted by a gracious and grateful member of our church family, reflecting during the Season of Creation:

For flowers that bloom about our feet, Father, we thank Thee.

For tender grass so fresh, so sweet, Father, we thank Thee.

For the song of bird and hum of bee, For all things fair we hear or see, Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

For blue of stream and blue of sky,

Father, we thank Thee. For pleasant shade of branches high,

Father, we thank Thee. For fragrant air and cooling breeze, For beauty of the blooming trees, Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

For this new morning with its light,

Father, we thank Thee. For rest and shelter of the night,

Father, we thank Thee. For health and love, for love and friends,

For everything Thy goodness sends, Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

- by Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Legacy Journey Begins Oct. 13

“The Legacy Journey is a biblically-based course that teaches you how to truly live and leave a legacy for generations to come. This course will lead you deeper into investing, basic estate planning, purposeful living, safeguarding your legacy, and discovering the keys to generational wealth and true generosity.” (Website) What’s keeping you from creating the legacy of your dreams? Join this exciting class and let’s take a journey together. An excellent companion to Financial Peace University, this will get you planning toward leaving a family legacy that will last and last. Could there be a better time to learn, grow, and prepare as we approach stewardship season? Why wait? Sign up under Activity #3 to join this special class beginning October 13. Cost: your time, well invested! ($100/individual value)

THANK YOU… Thank you to our Bible Sponsors who gave towards the purchase of new Bibles for our children and youth. Dear Church Family, Thanks for all your love and support at this most difficult time. We appreciate all your prayers and visits to Ray. Our family will be forever grateful. With love, Joan Iehl & Family ____________________________________________ CONDOLENCES… We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Ray Iehl who passed away on Aug. 30; to Bruce Foust on the passing of his brother, David on Sept. 7; and to Susie Walker on the passing of her mother on Sept. 13. Invite a Friend Sunday is October 20!

Let’s CELEBRATE!!

Invite a Friend Sunday is October 20th. This is your opportunity to CELEBRATE the blessings of First Baptist and invite a friend or neighbor to join you in church. We are a great place to learn about God’s love, to find friends, to work and sing together, to serve our neighbors a meal and offer a helping hand to people in our community and around the world. You can learn to play bells, join others in the choir, join Bible studies, fellowship, play games, and eat together at FBC. Tell others about the good thing we have here. CELEBRATE First Baptist in October by inviting a friend on October 20 or before!

Post cards will be available to handout to friends with information about our services and location. The adult and children’s choirs will be singing during worship and we’ll be offering a small baked gift to our guests after worship.

Fall and Winter Clothing Giveaway

Once again, we need your help! FBC is participating in the Fall Church Row Coalition Clothing Giveaway on Saturday, October 19th at Blessed Sacrament Church. We need your help to collect good, used adult and children’s clothing, coats, boots, hats, scarves, and mittens. Blankets, towels, pillows, and other bedding are also much needed items. You may bring your gently used items to the drop-off container in the church entryway to take them downstairs to the stage in the social room. Thank you for your help. Those willing to help sort items on Friday, Oct. 18th can contact Wini Dewey.

2019 World Mission Offering “Let Living Water Flow”

Every fall ABC congregations across our country and Puerto Rico come together for a time of awareness, advocacy and action for global mission. The World Mission Offering gives us an opportunity to celebrate and support the ministries that God is using to transform the world. Our church will be receiving the World Mission Offering during the month of October. Our goal is $1,500. We will be kicking off the campaign with a parade of flags during morning worship on October 6th. The 2019 World Mission Offering will highlight the Ministry Priorities of Evangelism and Discipleship, Immigrants and Refugees, and Education. While these represent only a fraction of IM’s ministries, they provide a window into what God is doing worldwide through our 123 global servants, 900+ volunteers, 43 home staff and 250+ global partners. Please give generously to support the 2019 World Mission Offering and help us reach our goal of $1,500.

Prayer Team

Prayer team will meet on Wed., October 2nd from 6:15-6:45 p.m. in Room 20 (Quilters Room) and will finish in time for adult choir practice. Our next scheduled prayer time is Oct. 16th and will continue on the first and third Wednesdays each month. We will pray the scriptures and personal prayers when asked. If you can’t attend, feel free to put your written prayer requests in the office or Marcia Street’s mailbox in the church hallway.
